RESILIENT SHIP DESIGN COURSE

AGAINST UNDER WATER AND ABOVE WATER THREATS

13-16 MAY 2014 AMSTERDAM

TNO has developed a combined programme for their leading courses on resilient design against underwater and above water threats. Four days of in depth and valuable theory will be combined with demonstrations and examples of implementation from industry.

FOR WHOM? The course is aimed at Survivability experts Designers of naval vessels Naval ship manufacturing industry Managers of new naval projects Project engineers who make specifications of naval equipment and installations Engineers who monitor naval building or upgrade projects Those responsible for technical procurement Classification society

PURPOSE OF THE COURSE The main purpose of the course is to learn the basics of designing against modern above water and underwater threats in a cost and mass effective way. The course is specifically focused on early design stages in which crucial decisions have to be made within short periods of time. Participants will learn the principles of ship survivability, so that they are able to design themselves, to communicate with specialists or to judge an underwater shock problem or above water threat. The knowledge can also be applied to upgrade ships for new threats.

Bert Bosman Senior project engineer, with TNO since 1982. Performed and conducted projects related to dynamic shock and vibration testing of structures as well as desktop studies.

Jaap Parent (Netherlands Ministry of Defence Materiel Organisation) Senior officer Vulnerability Reduction. Jaap manages R&D projects on vulnerability and related topics, and supports the Netherlands MoD Staff, the Navys Operational Command, DMO designers and project engineers on vulnerability matters.

Erik Carton Senior scientist ballistic protection and materials. As materials scientist active in blast and impact phenomena, including explosive metal working technologies, for over 15 years. Generated energy-based engineering models that describe projectile-target interaction for several ballistic material types (metals, fabrics, ceramics).

Andr Vaders (Netherlands Ministry of Defence Materiel Organisation) Senior Expert Structural Mechanics. Expert member of the NLD-UK BNCP-R24 team for the aspects shock, vulnerability and structures and member of the NLD-DEU Shock Expert Group.

Clarel Smit Clarel has major experience with analysing the effects of weapons used against warships, and with improving ships to withstand these effects. He is responsible for the development of a methodology for vulnerability analyses. Senior scientist, with TNO since 1989

Andr van Erkel Team leader Ship protection and survivability of maritime platforms TNO. Expert in ship vulnerability. Involved in this area for nearly 30 years and focused on: structural modelling, blast modelling, explosive testing of full scale ships, radar protection, metal failure modelling with universities and successfully developed and patented blast resistant bulkheads and doors.

Rogier van der Wal Scientific researcher. Started with TNO in 2000 on ship vulnerability and has been working on ship structures against fire and ballistics ever since. Provided integral solutions for the Royal Netherlands Navy to maximise survivability of both the Joint Support Ship and Patrol Vessels. Guest lecturers from industry will contribute with practical lectures.

Wim Trouwborst Senior scientist and project manager, with TNO since 1986. Performed and conducted projects related to underwater shock modelling and analysis and composite structures.
