When to go
Any time is a great time to visit Tasmania! The summer months of December, January and February are the busiest. However, in winter prices are cheaper and tourists are fewer so youll have more space to explore and experience your own winter wonderland.
Launceston, Tamar and the North

Tasmanias second largest city, Launceston, is a great base for exploring the states north. It has a fine range of accommodation and dining options. Experience the vibrant cafes, leafy parks and relaxed tempo of Launceston life. Wander through art galleries, museums and quaint 19th century villages in and around Launceston, Australias third oldest city. And follow this with an afternoon picnic at Cataract Gorge, a delightful urban reserve a few minutes walk from the city. Slipping slowly north past orchards, forests, pastures and vineyards, the Tamar River links Launceston with Bass Strait. A visit is not complete without a drive through the Tamar Valley, home to some of the states finest wineries and dotted with roadside stalls packed with plump strawberries and other fresh farm gate treats.
The North West

One of Tasmanias gems, the North West is a magnificent region famous for its coastal heaths, wetlands and ancient rainforests. For fine food lovers, theres a vibrant cafe culture in both the major towns and seaside villages. In the humble hills of north west Tasmania resides a French chef serving gourmet fare to the exacting standards he delivered at the Ritz in Paris. Further west, in the midst of the Tarkine rainforest, you could be forgiven for believing you are the last being on Earth. In north west Tasmania, rich red soil produces some of the finest produce in the nation as the wild waves of Marrawah draw surfers from around the world.

Hobart and Surrounds

Nestled in the foothills of grand Mt Wellington, Hobart has a rich heritage and a relaxed atmosphere. The states capital, located on the south-eastern coast of Tasmania, is known for its colonial architecture, colourful festivals, world-class restaurants and hip urban bars. In Hobart, trawlers gently rock at Constitution Dock, swelling with the days catch of ocean trout, oysters, scallops and prized abalone. Cruise beneath some of Australias highest sea cliffs on an eco-adventure cruise off Bruny Island and later catch a show in Hobarts charming Theatre Royal, Australias oldest theatre. Visit Salamanca Market on a Saturday, Australias largest outdoor markets and further south you can discover Australias convict past at Port Arthur Historic Site.
The East Coast

Tasmanias east coast is a haven for lovers of white-sand beaches, fishing and slow-paced seaside life. Blessed with mild weather, this lazy stretch of coast invites exploration by foot, kayak, boat or swimming, as well as wildlife spotting. Take the journey into the World Heritage Area. At Derwent Bridge, see the amazing Wall, the history of the highlands carved in Huon pine. Stop at Lake St Clair for a lakeside walk then continue to picturesque Strahan. Overnight: The Strahan Village
Days 3-4: Strahan - Cradle Mountain
Take the road north from Strahan through the mining town of Zeehan, with its fascinating Pioneers Museum. Branch off towards Cradle Mountain take a scenic helicopter flight, see the famous profile of the peak reflected in the waters of Dove Lake on a canoe tour or take a short walk around the lake. Day 5-6: Cradle Mountain - Freycinet
Start early to drive through Launceston, Scottsdale and St Helens to reach the east coast. Continue south towards Freycinet National Park. In the aevening discover Tasmanias greatest sea kayaking destination on the Freycinet Paddle. Watch for soaring sea eagles, little penguins and the sudden gleam of a dolphins back as it breaks the oceans surface. Overnight: Freycinet Lodge (B)
Day 7: Freycinet - Hobart

Spend the morning leisurely driving your way into Strahan. Take a scenic flight for an amazing view of the World Heritage Area. Watch the sunset on Ocean Beach as the mutton birds fly in overhead. On day 4, Step aboard Gordon River Cruises, a quiet, comfortable way to explore pristine World Heritage Area wilderness. Cruise across Macquarie Harbour to discover the magnificent Gordon River with its ancient Huon pines and perfect reflections. Overnight: Strahan Village
Day 5: Strahan - Hobart
On the drive to Hobart visit the Wall in the Wilderness to see Tasmanian wilderness heritage carved in life-size panels at Derwent Bridge. Enjoy a coffee at Lake St Clair Visitor Information Centre and walk down to the deepest lake in the southern hemisphere. As you continue on to Hobart, stop and see some of Tasmanias wildlife at Something Wild wildlife sanctuary and Russell Falls at Mt Field National Park. Overnight: Grand Mercure Hadley, Hobart

Spend a relaxing day around Hobarts waterfront where you will find stylish cafes, as well as art galleries and studios where youll find a piece of the island to take home with you.

After your arrival in Hobart, pick up your car and take time to explore see the contemporary artwork on display at The Henry Jones Art Hotel, Australias first dedicated art hotel; call in to the galleries and cafes of Salamanca Place. If your stay includes a Saturday, Salamanca Market is a must-see. Overnight: The Henry Jones Art Hotel, Hobart Follow the Arthur Highway into history as you explore the Tasman Peninsula, with magnificent coastal scenery and rich convict heritage. Allow plenty of time to wander through the Port Arthur Historic Site. Start early to drive to Launceston, northern Tasmanias gracious city. Check into the Country Club Villas and enjoy a trail ride or a relaxing round of golf on their championship course, then discover Launcestons many attractions - the exciting Inveresk Cultural Precinct, the citys beautiful parks and gardens and the Cataract Gorge Reserve. Overnight: Country Club Villas, Launceston Follow the Northern Wine Route along the Tamar River then east to Pipers River region wineries, via George Town, Bridport, Scottsdale and Derby to St Helens on the east coast. The security deposit will be refunded on the return of the vehicle provided the vehicle has not suffered any damage or been involved in an accident. Credit card fees apply but vary. There is the opportunity for walks of different levels of difficulty, offering scenic views of the Leven River. Wildlife may cross your path as you walk through the rainforest. Wander through the sanctuary at your leisure. See the animals daylight habits, sleeping in their dens, sunbaking, play fighting or fossicking for food. An opportunity to join one of the Keepers tours which operate hourly. The guides will lead you through the sanctuary giving you a greater understanding of this unique animal and the Devils@cradle conservation programs, you may even get to touch one.
The tour commences with a short film, followed by a summary of our conservation work and concludes with the handling of one of our young devils by your tour guide - you will be given the option of having a pat if you wish! The second section of the tour is amongst a large breeding group of Tasmanian devils, the guide will enter the enclosures and feed a number of these animals whilst interpreting their behaviour and answering any questions you may have.

Bay of Fires Walk Day 1: Launceston - Forester Beach Camp

Your guides will provide a briefing on the walk, check your gear and assist with preparing your pack. Journey to Mt. William National Park via a scenic route of Scottsdale and the tin-mining town of Derby. We reach the Northern part of the Mt. William National Park and begin walking at Boulder Point. Views to the north include the Bass Strait Islands (Flinders, Cape Barren). Lunch is enjoyed in the company of native birds, interesting shells and marine artefacts on one of the many pristine beaches nestled into the coastline. The evening is spent at Forester Beach camp for relaxation. Overnight: Forester Beach Camp (L, D)

Travelling south, be amazed at the magnificent coastline of colour and solitude. Walk along ridgelines of sand-dunes, one can enjoy views across heathlands and across the ocean to the east. Exploration of the marsupial lawns often reveals quiet native animals and the many tracks they leave behind. The day is yours to relax or set off on yet another adventure paddling the tranquil waters of Ansons River. Discover the delicate ecology of this river system, as it winds its way to the mouth of Ansons Bay, a haven for water birds and eagle rays. Day 2: From Barn Bluff Hut - Pine Forest Moor Hut
Today is undulating with a few sections of exposed moorland. There are no large hills and the once notoriously muddy Pine Forest Moor is now a duckboard path over the mud. Side trips to Lake Will are also available. Travel across plains where glaciers once sat and slowly moved, scouring out shallow tarns. Here there are plains of button grass with ancient Pencil Pines sitting with their roots in the water. Rising from the moors, the peaks of Cradle Mountain and Barn Bluff are behind us to the North, and the stately Mt. Pelion West directly ahead. Overnight: Pine Forest Moore Hut (B, L, D)
towards Bass Strait. There are three major sets of waterfalls and we opt to visit one or more of these. We will probably take lunch down to enjoy beside one of the falls. Today we begin with a long, slow descent around the base of Mt. Pelion West down to the Forth River before it plunges into the Lemonthyme Valley. After a break at Frog Flats by the Forth River, we have a long, gentle ascent out of the valley onto the beautiful Pelion Plains with outstanding views of Mt. Oakleigh. There are many side trips in the Pelion Plains area with mountains all around, some excellent swimming holes, abandoned copper mines, or simply peaceful and humbling spots to rest quietly. Overnight: Pelion Plains Hut (B, L, D)
Lake St Clair is Australias deepest natural lake, with most of its areas shaped by glaciers. The walk is mainly through cool temperate eucalypt forest, and birdsong is all around. We arrive at Narcissus at the northern end of Lake St Clair in time for lunch before boarding the Idaclair cruise boat for the spectacular cruise back to Cynthia Bay. The return trip to Quamby Estate is through the trout fishing mecca of the highland lakes, descending the rugged Western Tiers to the broad plains of the Northern Midlands, and passing through the rural townships of Cressy and Longford. After a gear check and introductions, we journey to Waldeim in Cradle Valley. A fine spot to rest in the native spectacular glacial cirque, then dropping into Waterfall Valley gardens. Please read these conditions carefully as they apply to all Qantas Holidays bookings. Suppliers: Qantas Holidays is not itself a transport, tour, event or accommodation provider. In making your travel arrangements we act only as an agent for the airlines, hotels, tour operators and other suppliers who supply those services. You should obtain and read the applicable suppliers terms and conditions as they may limit or exclude their liability to you. How to book: Contact your licensed AFTA travel consultant, who will be responsible for managing your booking and forwarding your payment to us. You will be deemed to have accepted these conditions on behalf of everyone named in your booking. Please note that all requests for bookings are subject to availability. Booking fee: Your travel agency may apply a booking fee in addition to the price of your holiday package. Please check at the time of booking. Payment: A non-refundable deposit is payable within seven days of confirmation of your booking: domestic (within Australia) $55 per person international $165 per person plus any additional deposit required by suppliers (you will be notified at the time of booking) Payment of the balance in full is required at least 30 days before the scheduled commencement of your holiday (or earlier if specified for the particular package). For bookings made within this period, full payment is required at the time ofbooking. If you have not paid by the due date, we may cancel your booking and retain your deposit. Cancellations: If you cancel your booking, the amount of your deposit will not be refunded, including deposits required by suppliers. If you have paid the balance of your holiday price, suppliers may also impose cancellation fees amounting to all or part of the total price paid. Once your holiday has commenced, you cannot cancel or obtain a refund on any component of your booking regardless of whether you use it. Changes by you: If you change your holiday package and your documents need to be reissued, a change fee is payable at the time of the change: domestic (within Australia) $27 international $25 plus any cancellation / change fee imposed by suppliers for any component you cancel. Unforseen changes: If we have to change any part of your booking, for example, if an airline changes its schedules or your chosen accommodation is no longer available, or if there is an increase in the price due to additional taxes or supplier charges, we will notify you. You will have the option of cancelling your booking, in which case we will refund the amount you have paid, less any cancellation fees imposed by other suppliers. International travel: Each passenger is responsible for their own visa, passport (with at least 6 months validity), immigration, quarantine, customs, health and other requirements of the countries to be visited or transited through. Qantas Holidays makes no representations as to the safety, conditions or other issues that may arise at any destination. Travel advice is available from the Australian Government at smartraveller.gov.au. Limit of liability: To the maximum extent permitted by law, Qantas Holidays excludes all liability for direct, indirect, consequential or incidental damages, lost profits or savings or damages for disappointment. Our liability for a breach of condition or warranty implied by law or otherwise, and which cannot be excluded, is limited to the extent possible, at our option to the supply of the services again or the payment of the cost of having the services supplied again.
