13 houses
Top: Mr Garcia addressing the audience through a translator. Evraz Highveld Steel and Vanadiums Mapochs Mine at Roossenekal handed 13 newly build houses to employees last Monday. The houses are situated in Roossenekal and according to the company, the first phase of the companys housing to employees project. The companys CEO, Mr Mike Garcia, told the audience at the handover function that he can identify with the plight of employees, recounting his childhood in the state of Arizona, USA, where his father worked for a copper mine. Mr Garcia used his childhood experience as a example of how a mine fulfils its responsibility towards employees and a community, even after all the ore had been extracted from the earth. Mine officials and Mr Garcia also told the audience that the company keep employees informed about the financial state of the company, as the success of projects such as housing have linkage wit minimum production and profitability. From the employees side, the local NUMSA chairperson, Mr Leonard Thwala, told the audience that the union was not at war with the company, but that it looks after the interests of employees through constructive dialogue and negotiation, expressing the hope that the next phase of the project will follow soon. In the top left photograph Mr Garcia cut the ribbon with Mapochs SLP Chairman, Mr Bheki Shongwe.

Has Manoke been forgotten?

Mr Calvin Selepe from Manoke Village 4km outside Burgersfort this week complained that his village only receives water when there is a funeral. The only time we see running water from our taps is when theres a funeral. Maybe we have to kill each other to get water? When someone dies we celebrate because thats when well get water, he said. He explains that people currently buy water from some residents in the village who could afford to drill boreholes at their homes. With the high rate of unemployment in the village people cannot afford to buy those containters with water. Pensioners suffer. He added that their roads are rocky and the only time they see government officials is near election time. He forwarded the photographs below of himself and the rocky road through his village.

Mine not selling jobs

Modikwa Platinum Mine this week warned residents in the area not to become victims of a scam through which people promise jobs at the mine in exchange for money. It has come to our attention that various individuals are contacting people offering fictitious job opportunities at Modikwa Platinum Mine at a cost. The public should take note that such practices are nothing more than scams which are intended to defraud the public of their hard earned cash, a press release by the company stated. Modikwa Mine follows a tried and tested recruitment practice process whereby jobs are advertised through print, electronic and also on the Mines website for all the qualifying job seekers to apply. Modikwa Mine also distributes vacancy lists to local tribal offices and the local press. Any vacany advertised can be verified via our HR/ careers section. The Mine will never use a mobile phone number as a primary contact number for a job advertisement. We encourage the community to be vigilant as and when they encounter individuals who alleges to be recruiting on behalf of Modikwa Mine and report such individuals through our hotline whistle blow telephone 0800 006 792. Modikwa Mine take this matter extremely seriously and is working with the appropriate legal authorities where possible to bring them to book. It is important for the public to remember that these scams will continue to exist as long as there are people willing to pay someone in exchange for a job opportunity, be it real or fictitious. Therefore, as a matter of principle, Modikwa Mine appeals to the public at large to never pay for a job as there is no company in South Africa that sells any job they concluded.

Sekhukhune District is still waiting for the Auditor Generals report

The Sekhukhune District Municipality is still awaiting the finalised report by the Auditor General for the financial year 2012 - 2013. This meant that the Draft Annual Report for 2012/2013 was tabled on 24 January 2014 as prescribed by legilation, without the Auditor Generals report. The Executive Mayor of the Sekhukhune District Municipality Cllr Mogobo David Magabe said: The Draft Annual Report for 2012/2013 was tabled before Council on the 24th January 2014 as legislatively prescribed. However it didnt contain the Audited Financial Statement and the Audit Report from the Auditor General of South Africa (AGSA). The delay from the AGSA has affected some of the annexures to the Annual Report namely the Audited APS and the Audit Report. As the District Municipality we will however wait in anticipation for a speedy resolution of this matter. The municipality has prepared an submitted the Annual Financial Statement on the 31st August 2013 as legislation requires in section 122 of the MFMA 2003. The audit process started officially on the 1st of September 2013 and was due to be completed three months from the date of submission as legislated. The Mayoral Committee of the municipality has refered the issue of non-compliance on the part of the Auditor General to the relevant authorities for resolution.

Live broadcasts from Pistorius trial - your views

Oscar Pistorius murder trial is due to start next week and the former paralympian and Olympic athlete will continue to be in the spotlight as live radio and television broadcasts from the courtroom had been approved this week. Judge Dunstan Mlambo who had to rule on the media houses applications for broadcasting rights had to consider Pistorius right to a fair trial, the right to freedom of expression and the principle of open justice. On DSTV a 24-hour channel will carry the full live broadcast with other channels broadcasting large chunks of the proceedings. There will also be live broadcasting on radio stations such as Radio 702 and Highveld Stereo. It is clear that the South African public will be getting more than their fair share of the Pistorius trial, but is this what the public would like to view and listen to? Platinum Gazette asked readers whether they will be following the trial in the media and whether they think it will impact on the fairness of the trial.

Me. Ek dink hy gaan in elk geval loskom. By haar is Xanth.

Mr Bonny Selomane said: I will listen to the radio. He has to get a fair trail and face the law for what he did. Im interested in what will Mnr Oupa Mkhabela s: Al happen. die mense gaan stories daarvan maak.

Mr Morrison Moloto said: Yes, Ill follow it. I just want to know what happened. If something happens to famous people it is very interesting to us. You know the 14th of February is a precious day. Why did he kill his girlfriend? I think it is going to be fair for everyone because of all the media.

Ms Mary Mlema said: Ill watch on the TV because we want to know how the court will rule on this cruel guy who is killing women. I think he must rot in jail. His face showed he killed his girlfriend from the first day he appeared in court. Yes, he will have a fair trial. There will be no space for funny stuff in court.

Mr Sydney Mmopane and Mr Jack Hlatswayo said: Ja, well watch on TV. He is a famous guy and that is why people will watch. We think he will get a fair trial. Ms Zanele Masuku said: Ill be watching and listening to the broadcasts because I want to hear the results and judgment. I want to check that he is not treated differently because he is so famous. It will be fair because it will be there for everyone to see. Left: Ms Khensani Madike said: Im interested to see what will happen to him. I watch TV, so that is where Ill follow it. I think the trial must be fair. He is just person like anybody else. The media will have an effect on everything, but the judge will decide how much it will affect him. Mr Chippa Mphogo said: Ill follow it on the TV. I want to know what happens and the final result. Yes, he will get a fair trial because everything is being recorded.

Mnr. Theo Visagie s: Ek sal so nou en dan as ek tyd het kyk na wat in die hof gebeur. Dis nie vir my n priority nie. My vrou sal seker meer kyk.

Hy was n OK ou. Ja, hy sal n fair trial h.

Me. Charlotte Vermeulen s: Ek sal dit wil kyk.

Mr Sam Mankge said: Well follow it on the TV and radio. No, he will not get a fair trial because of all the media attention. It is a problem.

Mr Sello Ledwaba said: I have to follow it. We like to see what happens when famous, rich people get into trouble. Usually they walk free. It is very interesting to us. I dont know if it will be a fair trial. The family will probably settle, pay a couple of millions and hell walk free.

Mr PA Motswana said: Ill listen to the radio. What he has done is not a good thing. Im interested to follow it. I think he is going to jail. The law is bigger than the money he has that is why I am following it. Yes, it must be a fair trial. Theyve given a long Mr Bruce Mbalati said: Ill time before this trial so it must watch it on TV. I dont know if be well investigated and fair. it will be fair.

Style, quality, comfort, Astra

Westvaal Steelpoort, as everybody knows, is situated at the busiest cross in town. And the road surface in that intersection is horrible to say the least. So, Platinum Gazette, after taking delivery from the dealer for a test spin on Wednesday with the new 1.4 Opel Astra Turbo (petrol and automatic), very gently eased into this infamous intersection for fear of damaging the vehicle (the editor is used to a more robust 4 x 4). First impression, from the intersection and heading to Lydenburg / Mashishing over the railroad (bad surface again) is how well the thing rides. Its a bigger car than the previous generation, having grown by 17cm in length and 7cm in wheelbase, but feel still larger, floating serenely over dodgy tarmac and delicately smoothing bumps and potholes without ever feeling disconnected. Unlike some of the competitors, Opel chose not to adopt multi-link rear suspension on the Astra, instead using a development of the last cars torsion beam set-up, but with a new Watts linkage - a pair of horizontal supports connected by a short vertical bar - to reign in the lateral movement of the twist axle, a novel arrangement patented by General Motors and cars can be uniquely calibrated (read for our crap roads) while offering a better balance of comfort and handling. The turbo is barely felt and speed arises quickly as a glance on the stylish instruments confirm. The speed is also safe with all the electronic gizmos thrown in with this car (air bags etc) and tight bends require a genuinely daft approach speed to get the traction control light flashing. The Astra remains composed on the road and a stylish vehicle. The built quality, outside and inside is up there with the best and the space in the vehicle and boot is large and comfortable for its class. The engine pulls the car to 100km/h in less than 10 seconds if you know what you are doing and the brakes pull it to a standstill quickly and in a straight line without a swerve. Niggles - not much. We dont like the winders for the back windows, the Marie biscuit spare and no vanity mirror for the driver (it is so stylish you may wish to put on a tie you know). But for R265 500, we think it is a steal.
