Anxious for Lent? Oh, dont get me wrong, Epiphany is great. Our faith in Christ has again been strengthened as we have looked at the ministry of Jesus which reveals this double truth: The Son of Mary is the Son of God. The Messiah of the Jews is the Savior of all. Still, all through February Ive found myself longing for Lent. Maybe its this long, cold, snowy winter weve been having. It has us all looking for any sign of spring, and the coming of Lent does mean that spring is on its way. Maybe its just that Lent usually begins in February so my mental calendar keeps telling me it should be here by now. But, Easter is quite late this year (April 20). So while Ash Wednesday is now just ahead (March 5), its been a long time coming. Longing for Lent? That still might sound a little strange. Our schedules are tight, and into those already tight schedules Lent packs extra worship. Who longs for more in the schedule? And, those Lenten hymns? Well, nobodys ever accused them of being overly cheery. Then theres those Lenten subjects that humans are ever trying to put out of their minds: sin, suffering, darkness, and death. Longing for Lent? As strange as it might seem, I do. I do long for it for in Lent God always amazes me from start to finish. In Lent I am always amazed at the Spirits gracious power at St. Marks. His Word goes out calling thousands of His people out of the darkness of this world and the overwhelming schedules of their daily lives. As He calls, the Spirit gathers, and from Ash Wednesday to Good Friday His children gather to gaze upon nothing else but their Savior and His cross. Amazing! Its further amazing because from the very start Lent declares a message nobody

wants to hear. For who likes to hear, For dust thou art and to dust thou shalt return? Who likes to be reminded of ashes to ashes, dust to dust? We live in a society that celebrates strength, vitality, and the triumphs of the human spirit. But on Ash Wednesday, in what is opposed to everything in our society, we gather to confess our absolute weakness and the futility of our own efforts. Turning from ourselves, all eyes turn to Jesus. In Him there is glory even in the ashes: He remembers that we are but dust (Psalm 103:14). And, Since the children have flesh and blood, Jesus too shared in their humanity so that by His death He might destroy Him who holds the power of death-that is, the devil-- and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death (Hebrews 2:14,15). For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive (1 Corinthians 15:22). Amazing! Perhaps this longing for Lent is a longing to sing those catchy, upbeat Lenten hymns. Not really. Lenten hymns are not upbeat. Their tunes are not trivial for neither are our sins. With these songs there is not a trace of the worldly advice to Put on a happy face and The sun will come up tomorrow. Rather, their melodies invoke a different mood, one that reaches deep down into our souls. They bring forth the hurt we often hide, hurt that only finds its healing in Christ. With these hymns we contemplate the depth of our sins and the depth of our Fathers love, a love that moved Him to sacrifice His one and only Son for us. No, I dont imagine many Lenten hymns would be chosen for a Sunday favorite-hymn-sing- along. Still, they serve their purpose: with tune and text they remind us to despair of ourselves and throw ourselves totally, completely upon the mercy and merits of Jesus. In a world Continued on Page 3...

Pebbles From the ROC... As we watched the winter Olympics recently, we might have thought about such a Bible passage as, I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. (2 Timothy 4:7) Our Lord, through the apostle Paul, reminds us that the greatest race of all is the life we have in Christ. To finish the race, an Olympian needs to keep focused on the finish line. As Gods people we also need to stay focused on the finish line being with Christ, our Savior, in heaven. Oh, how we want someday to receive that gift of grace, the Crown of Righteousness. Such a lesson is shared with the ROC teens when, for example, we play a game a pool with them or play a game of ping pong. Stay focused and finish! We need some help. If there is anyone who is able to volunteer to do just the employee tax withholding and reporting for THE ROC, it would be greatly appreciated. Since our treasurer is also a volunteer, we are hoping to divide some of the responsibilities. If you are able to help, please contact Don Bartz (920-261-1319 or debartz@charter.net) or Pastor Mueller (920-206-9581 or wttnroc@sbcglobal.net). Thank you so much. Those hymns turn us from happiness as a feeling obtained by human pursuits to a Savior who, despite the sadness of our sinful condition, has obtained for us not a fleeting feeling, but a real eternity of joy with Him. Amazing! May God bless your Lenten season richly as you turn your eyes to Christ and Christ alone! Christs servant to you, Pastor Jensen

Christian Doctrine - Cookbooks - Messenger Christian Doctrine: Angels (Good & Evil) Our sinful nature is prone to assign a wrong value to angels. A few people overvalue them, by adoring angels rather than the God who sent them. More likely, we hardly give them a thought. So, what does the Bible tell us about angels? God made angels sometime during the six days of creation. God makes his angels winds, his servants flames of fire (Hebrews 1:7). So, they are spirits, not humans with both body and soul. Angels are also very numerous. John references many angels, number thousands upon thousands, and ten thousand times ten thousand (Revelation 5:11). Angels know more than we do, but not nearly what our allknowing God knows. They are more powerful than we, but not nearly almighty like God. Angels are quicker than webut still occupy only one place at one time, unlike God who fills all things. They are not subject to death as we are, but also have not existed forever, as does God. God created angels to be messengers of his love to human beings. In fact, angel means messenger. Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation? (Hebrews 1:14) Unfortunately, not all angels remained faithful to the Lord. The devil (accuser) aka Satan (enemy) rebelled against God.
Page 4
The Lord has eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels (Matthew 25:41). Meantime, these demons trouble and tempt us on earth: The devil leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him. (Revelation 12:9) Thankfully, our Savior Jesus will soon crush Satan under your feet (Romans 16:20). In fact, he already has: by virtue of his resurrection from the dead (1 Corinthians 15:57). And now: He will command angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways (Psalm 91:11). With them we sing the praise of our Savior: Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise! (Revelation 5:12)

Spanish Outreach - Hospital Visits Spanish Outreach... The Work of Our Pastors & Others: Baptisms at Saint Marks? Christ himself is our peace, who has made the two one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility (Ephesians 2:14). That passage describes the unity of Jew and Gentile in the New Testament Churcha unity effected by Christs death, which nullified the provisions of the Old Testament Law.
Page 5
Still, you might be forgiven if the above passage reminded you of our outreach to Spanish speaking people. At St. Marks School, students from Anglo families and students from Mexican families are all simply students and fellow Christians-- unhyphenated. (Check out the way everyone accepts one another!) Its the same at church. (Just check out our church directory!) It means that the Holy Spirit has come a long way in us and through us. Praised be His name! Through him we have -- whether Mexican or American one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all (Ephesians 4:5-6). Attendance has been great at both church and school. Our study of the Gospel according to St. John will bring us the Lenten message this coming month. Abel & Mayra and family have now joined us; Blanca and family are well on their way toward doing so. Also, Pastor Dale never breaks stride in his faithful service to our people. Dont forget: Its your support your prayers and your offerings through which Christ accomplishes the work above. Thanks!!!
Your Pastors Want to Serve You at the Hospital When you are hospitalized, your pastors want to visit you. However, they need your help to do so. If your hospitalization takes place at Watertown Memorial, PLEASE BE SURE TO ANSWER YES WHEN THEY ASK IF YOU WANT YOUR CLERGY TO VISIT. That way your name will make it on St. Marks list for visitation. Generally speaking...Mondays: Pastor Werner - Wednesdays: Pastor Walther - Fridays: Pastor Jensen If hospitalization takes place outside of Watertown: please let one of the pastors knoweven in advance, if it is a scheduled surgery. The best way to inform the pastors is to hand one of them a note ahead of time or to phone and leave a message for them. Its especially helpful to let Pastor Werner know about your out-of-town hospital stay, because making those visits lies in his area of ministry. If you happen to be staying at a hospital in Madison, we can also refer WELS chaplain Ken Wenzel to you. In time of emergency or as death is quickly drawing near: the telephone is your best avenue to reach a pastor. If a desperate time of need for your loved one happens to strike during the daytime on a weekday, call the church office. Somebody there will contact one of the pastors for you. If it falls after hours, call one of the pastors at home, and keep calling homes until you encounter one of them. Your pastors want to be there for you! Also, the whole congregation is happy to pray on your behalf when you are ill. Whether youre in the hospital or not, simply let one of the pastors know youd like a prayer for you in church. He will relay your need to whichever one of the pastors is preaching for the weekend. That pastor will write you into his prayers.

Elders Work: Review & Preview The Elders Board rejoices to report to you the following developments . 1. For the past nine years, members of St. Marks have labored to create a congregational atmosphere in which each soul is encouraged regularly to worship. We have employed personal visits, personal phone calls, personal mail, notes in the newsletter, and bulk e-mails by the hundreds of thousands toward this effort. For six years, St. Marks pastors
have personally visited members age twenty-eight and older whom we have rarely seen in worship. The Holy Spirit has graciously crowned all our efforts with success: What were once more than half a thousand able-bodied, local members who never worshipped with us now number less than seventy-five who have not worshipped with us fairly recently. 2. No longer listed as members are those for whom we have no address, nor those who have lived out of our area for a number of years. We have done our best to track these down and relay them to a nearby WELS church. Lacking such a church, we serve them at a distance as best we can. Nine years ago, people were listed as members in
half the states of our nation. By Gods grace, we now do a better job of trying genuinely to get these souls served. 3. This past year, with encouragement from the elders board, Pastor Walther began regularly text messaging more than four hundred of our members. Often Mondays text offers personal application of a verse from Scripture, Wednesdays message offers a prayer, and Fridays text message encourages worship. The elders board would like to express St. Marks continued need for an individual to more vigorously reach those in their twenties. For this and all our efforts, the elders board petitions your prayers on its behalf.
What do you think? As we look ahead, consider a few thoughts on Easter Easter means hope prevails over despair. Let us never live another day as if He were dead! Easter is the feast of freedom from death. Easter means to live in the light of the resurrection.
