Serologic
Problem-
Solving:
A Systematic
Approach for
Improved
Practice
Edited by
Sally V. Rudmann, PhD
Solving serologic problems and teaching others
how to solve these problems can present
a challenge to even the most experienced
technologists. Those so-called expert
immunohematologic problem-solvers may
never have had the opportunity to step back and
evaluate how they approach a problem and the
steps they take to resolve it. The frst chapter
reviews the problem-solving process, including
in what manner an individual approaches
any problem. In the remaining chapters, the
problem-solving model is applied to many types
of serologic problems and is emphasized through
case studies.

Resolution of ABO and Rh typing
discrepancies.
Evaluation of positive direct
antiglobulin tests.
Antibody identifcation.
Monoclonal reagents.
Application of patient clinical

Guidelines for the
Management of
Transfusion-Related
Acute Lung Injury
Developed for the Scientic Section Coordinating
Committee by Mark A. Popovsky, MD
This Guideline addresses the clinical
and laboratory features of transfusion-
related acute lung injury (TRALI), as
well as its management. TRALI is a life-
threatening complication of transfusion
that is clinically indistinguishable from the
acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), but which has a more favorable
prognosis. Nevertheless, in the developed nations, it is the second or third
most common cause of death from transfusion.

Guidelines for the
Laboratory Evaluation
of Transfusion Reactions
Developed for the Scientific Section Coordinating
Committee by Robertson Davenport, MD
While infectious transfusion complications
are often the focus of patients, physicians,
blood transfusion professionals and regulatory
agencies, nonviral and immunologically based
complications are the most prevalent risks
for a transfusion recipient. The diagnosis and
evaluation of any transfusion reaction is a matter of clinical judgment by
a physician trained in the adverse efects of transfusion. Negative testing
results should not be interpreted as defnitely excluding a transfusion reaction
if there is a strong clinical suspicion that the patients symptoms are related
to blood transfusion. The laboratory evaluation of suspected transfusion
reactions is critical not only to the health and well being of the patient, but
also to the process of improvement through corrective and preventive actions.

Bacterial and Parasitic
Contamination of
Blood Components
Edited by Mark E. Brecher, MD
Medical triumphs in the late 20th century have
virtually eliminated known viral risks from
blood and blood components, causing the
residual risk of transfusion-transmitted disease
to be predominantly bacterial or parasitic in
nature. This state-of-the-art reference is intended to further help health-
care professionals reduce risks of bacterial and parasitic contamination
of blood. Chapters are composed by recognized leaders in their felds
and cover bacteria, syphilis, malaria, Chagas disease and other parasitic
infections. Topics include history, pathology and epidemiology of these
infections, as well as detection strategies and the potential for pathogen
reduction. Emphasis is also placed on avoidance and detection of bacterial
contamination, and the implementation and cost-efectiveness of strategies
to reduce and limit its occurrence.

Strategies for Centralized
Blood Services
Edited by Marcus B. Simpson, MD
The value of centralized transfusion
services has been demonstrated by their
increased ef ciency, improved resource
management, cost reduction and
enhanced quality. This volume examines
how such ef ciency is achieved with up-
to-date and in-depth discussions of both
US and non-US networks: Puget Sound
Blood Center in Seattle, the Institute for
Transfusion Medicine in Pittsburgh, Florida Blood Services at Tampa Bay, and
the Hemominas Foundation in Brazil. Because areas with diferent needs
require diferent designs, the variation among these systems is instructive.
The critical issues for success in centralized networks are discussed in the
context of these systems for example, geography, logistics, competitive
viability and fnancial concerns. Separate chapters focus on informatics,
legal, regulatory and quality considerations, as well as the changing value
propositions for centralized networks today. The book serves as the felds
primary resource on this distinctive delivery model.

Guidelines for Pneumatic
Tube Delivery Systems:
Validation and Use to
Transport Blood Components
Developed for the Scientific Section Coordinating
Committee by Monique Mohammed, MS, MT(ASCP)
SBB; Roger Richard, MS, MT(AMT); and Lynne Uhl, MD
Many hospitals and transfusion services are
now using pneumatic tube delivery systems
as a means of delivering blood products
faster and more ef ciently. To ensure product safety and the maintenance
of quality, system validation is key. The goal of this Guideline is to provide
direction when considering pneumatic tube technology for blood component
distribution. For facilities currently using this technology, this serves as a
comparison between legacy methods and those addressed by the current
validation. For institutions using legacy pneumatic tube systems, this
document can help direct procedures needed to maintain long-term quality
assurance goals.

Circular of Information
for the Use of
Cellular Therapy Products
This CT Circular includes thorough descriptions of the most commonly
used minimally manipulated HCT/P products. Although the main
focus of this publication is on HCT/Ps, there is also a short discussion
on more than minimally manipulated products prepared under
investigational new drug protocols. AABB, American Association of
Tissue Banks, American Red Cross, American Society for Apheresis,
American Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation, Americas
Blood Centers, Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy,
ICCBBA, International Society for Cellular Therapy and National Marrow
Donor Program came together to create this CT Circular. The US Food and
Drug Administration provided a liaison to this group. The CT Circular is an
extension of container labels and includes information on defnitions,
donors, side efects of immediate and delayed immunologic and
