LESSON I.
CONCENTRATION.

Concentration signifies the state of being at a centre :con and centrum;/ A$$lied to thought, it is the act of bringing the +ind to a single $oint/ Each hu+an being +ust $ractise concentration

subjectively and objectively/ In other 1ords, each hu+an being ai+s 1ith +ore or less $recision at concentration on a $oint within and a $oint without his o1n 1orld/ Concentration <1ithout< is illustrated 1hen !ou devote all !our attention u$on 0ature, such as learning a trade, a $rofession, a science, an art or so+e for+ of business/ This is Evolution, outgoing or $ositive +ental energ!/ I shall call this Objective Concentration/ Concentration <1ithin< i+$lies the 1ithdra1ing of attention fro+ the external 1orld and the $lacing of +ind on <"od,< <S$irit,< <8eaven,< <=eligion,< <Peace,< <0irvana,< <Eternit!,< etc/ This is nvolution, i.e., inco+ing or negative energ!/ #hen Objective Concentration alone is $ractised, !ou develo$ into a hard%headed, $ractical +an of the 1orld or a successful +an of business/ You are 2een and shre1d/ The 1orld is a ver! +atter%of% fact thing to !ou/ You cannot thin2 of an!thing else be!ond +one!%+a2ing and $leasures and 1orldl! affairs/ You are a <1orldling of the 1orld,< ver! clever, rich, and a +aster along !our o1n lines/ 7ut s$irituall! !ou are an i+becile, 1orse than a bab!/ This is the Objective !ind.the <dee$est i++ersed in +atter, literall! +ade of the dust/< <It is the brain of 1orldl! 1isdo+, co++on sense, $rudence, +ethodical arrange+ent, order, disci$line, classification, the s2ill and 2no1ledge of the ex$ert in an! branch or de$art+ent of art or science/< This side of the +ind is 1ell develo$ed in Scientists, athe+aticians and 7usiness+en, etc/ #here it is not guided b! the Subjective ind, it can onl! see diversit! and difference and is the slave of a!a.the sla!er of the =eal/ "ubjective Concentration is see2ing the 6ingdo+ of 8eaven within !ou/ <"od is S$irit and the! that 1orshi$ 8i+ +ust 1orshi$ in S$irit and Truth/< *AP*ACE, the great astrono+er, asserted that he had s1e$t the heavens 1ith his telesco$e and found neither "od nor 8eaven/ Yes, $oor *AP*ACE4 8e loo2ed for "od objectivel! instead of subjectivel!/ The 6ingdo+ of "od co+es not 1ith 3observation3 but it is 31ithin3 !ou/ The be%all and the end%all of religion is the $ractice of Subjective Concentration/ The $erfor+ance of objective 1or2 b! the hu+an organis+ necessitates ex$enditure of energ! and at last death, because all Objective Concentration +eans 3going fro+3 the Absolute centre."od.and hence it ex$ends S$iritual Energ!/ Subjective Concentration +eans 3co+ing to3 the centre and hence it husbands and recu$erates this energ!/ 0o1 nature is +otion to and fro+, and S$irit.the centre of *ife/ This t1o% fold +otion constitutes 1hat is 2no1n as $olarit!.Evolution and Involution.negative and $ositive/ At the negative $ole life beco+es involved, i.e., 31ra$$ed u$3 in for+/ At the $ositive $ole life 3evolves3 or beco+es ex$ressed in nature/ In Subjective Concentration !ou return for fresh su$$lies to the inexhaustible storehouse of force.the Absolute #ill/ >esus healed the sic2, exhibited control over external nature b! raising the dead, because his chaste soul could receive nothing negativel! fro+ "od and could give it out $ositivel! to the objective 1orld/ All $o1er co+es fro+ "od/ I 1ould i+$ress u$on !ou the all%i+$ortant necessit! of $lacing !ourself in a +agneticall! $assive attitude to1ards the 5niversal #ill and then of ta2ing u$ a cal+, $ositive attitude to1ards the $heno+enal 1orld.1hich is a $rojection of the lo1er nature and hence +ust be handled +asterfull!, fearlessl! and confidentl!/ 7e $ositive to the external 1orld/ 7e negative and rece$tive to the *ord3s #ill%force/ =e+e+ber this/ This brings +e to the su$re+est and +ost solid truth contained in the Science of $ra!er/ The $ra!ing +ind, b! its +ere attitude of faith and earnest ex$ectation, o$ens itself out to the tre+endous inflo1 of Divine Energ!/ It dra1s close to the centre of all%$o1er, 1isdo+ and love, and drin2s dee$ of the living 1aters of life so that even the ver! face or flesh begins to shine under the influence of this self%$olari9ation.if I +a! be $er+itted to use this 1ord.through $ra!er/ 8ere is the causa nu#us bet1een a $ra!er and its sure re$l!/ Do !ou re+e+ber 1hat *ord =oseber! said of the great Puritan !stic Oliver Cro+1ell? both for+s of concentration +ust be $ractised so as to hold the t1o $oles in the even balance of har+onious gro1th/ You 1ill $erfor+ the dail! 1or2 to 1hich !ou are naturall! ada$ted in the co++on 1eal :Objective Concentration; and after the dail! tas2 is finished, retire to the boso+ of the 5niversal S$irit b! the regular $ractice of Subjective Concentration/ 0o1 1ill !ou realise the ideal of $eace in the ver! +idst of the toil and s1eat of the da!/ The foregoing diagra+, if closel! and thoughtfull! studied, 1ill sho1 the stages the +ind has to 3gro1 into3 in objective and subjective concentration/ In order to ac@uire 2no1ledge of the la1s of external nature the +irror !ou re@uire is accurate observation and !ou +ust focus !our attention and $ush objective concentration to its final stage of $erfect 2no1ledge or illu+ination in order to +aster an! s$ecial branch of science/ In Objective Concentration, $ratyahara and %harana are the $re$arator! stages/ Ta2e a scientist, for instance/ 8e 2no1s that 1hen the +ind is engaged 1ith several things, +ind force is scattered/ 8e cannot be a $olitician, a +usician, etc/, and at the sa+e ti+e an ex$ert scientist/ 8e graduall! abstracts his attention fro+ all other subjects and $auses it on one subject or one set of subjects/ $ratyahara is the continued effort of the +ind to so abstract itself/ %harana is reached 1hen this effort is finall! successful and the +ind beco+es steadfast and one% $ointed/ %hyana is an extension of this steadfastness/ #hen %hyana is reached, the student is be!ond the range of boo2s/ 8is +ind is occu$ied 1ith original researches and ex$eri+ents and his 2no1ledge beco+es +ore and +ore definite/ "oing on and on al1a!s on the one line co+$lete 2no1ledge of that subject is attained/ This is the objective vie1 of "amadhi/ All these stages 1hen co+$leted +a2e one "amayana/ The subjective vie1 of "amadhi no boo2s or 1ritings can teach !ou/ As !ou go dee$er and dee$er into Yoga, !ou 1ill understand these things in the light of !our Soul%Bision/ It 1ill co+e to !ou if !ou follo1 +! subse@uent instructions/ Des$air not/ WHAT IS MAYA? 0o1, first of all, 1hat is a!a :ignorance of the real;? Ta2e the dial%$late of a 1atch/ You 2no1 @uite 1ell that the hands of the 1atch are governed b! the +echanis+ behind/ 7oth are necessar!/ Ignorance exists in thin2ing that the hands of the 1atch +ove b! the+selves/ This visible universe is the dial%$late of the Invisible/ a!a :ignorance; blinds !ou to this fact, i.e., +ere objective 2no1ledge blinds !ou to the subjective side of life and !ou see nothing be!ond a +aterial universe/ 7ut !ou, 1ho reali9e both, objective as 1ell as subjective, need not be afraid of such a danger/ &or a danger it is to develo$ the objective +ind die neglect of the subjective/ In order to round !ourself out, $ractise both/ &ut first, last and always, let the subjective guide, govern and illumine the objective/ Also re+e+ber this- If !our +ind is at all attached to the objective 1orld, tr! !our ver! best to disattach it and fix it on the subjective side of life, else 1ill !ou bring untold suffering on !ourself/ The half%1ordl! and half%s$iritual +an 1ho 1ants to lead a s$iritual sensual life eventuall! brings about a conflict bet1een the la1s and forces of the t1o $lanes of being/ 8e is over1hel+ed 1ith $ain and at last 1ith cries of suffering, disease and loss, he is +ade to o$en his e!es/ 5nderstand the 1orld for 1hat it is but do not lo1er !our soul to the $oint of being attached to its s+all thoughts, things and 1a!s/ HOW TO CONCENTRATE OBJECTIVELY. :a; In all underta2ings 1hether of s+all or great i+$ortance shut off all thoughts and ideas exce$t such as have an! i++ediate and direct bearing u$on the thing in hand/ Pa! attention/ 7end all the energies of !our +ind and 1ill u$on it till it is co+$leted to !our satisfaction/ Divert !our attention fro+ one thing to another onl! 1hen !ou sanction b! a resolve and understand 1h! !ou do so/ Your dail! 1or2 1hich !ou +ust choose according to the s$ecial bent of !our +ind, 1ill $resent !ou

o$$ortunities/ :b; Control i+$ulse/ Su$$ose an idea enters !our +ind/ Co+$ose !ourself @uietl! before carr!ing out its $ur$ort/ Consider it/ Turn it over in !our +ind/ Conte+$late it/ #eave !our +ental energies around it, as it 1ere, till at last the idea 1ith !our final decision stands out clear%cut and 1ell% defined/ Then $roceed to act it out $h!sicall! 1ith !our +ental concentration cutting a 1a! for !ou straight on to the execution of !our designing/ This is forethought/ :c; In $erfect concentration ti+e vanishes/ In 1or2ing out a design on 1hich !ou have set !our heart dis$ense altogether 1ith the ele+ent of ti+e and 1or2 at it concentratedl! for da!s, +onths and !ears 1ith confident ex$ectation of success/ :d; Ta2e a $icture, re$resenting a landsca$e, the interior of a building, an asse+bl! of $ersons, a s@uare, a triangle or a +ore co+$licated geo+etrical figure/ *oo2 at it 1ell/ Then la! it aside/ Close !our e!es/ =e$roduce the $icture +entall! in detail/ Then re$ose !our +ind on the sa+e i+age to the exclusion of all other thoughts/ This is a +ore fixed and +editative +ethod and 1ill shar$en the +ind 1onderfull!/ It 1ill also develo$ the $o1er of conscious ental I+ager!/ The 2e! to Objective Concentration is Conscious Attention, re+e+ber/ ACTIVE AND PASSIVE MENTATION. These ter+s i+$l! t1o different distinct functions of the hu+an +ind/ The active function $erfor+s the volitional, voluntar! thin2ing/ It is the conscious focusing of the +ind on so+e +ental $roble+/ 7anishing fro+ the +ind all thoughts and ideas not in har+on! 1ith !our s$ecial subject of stud! i+$lies Active entation/ This function is used b! the active, 1ide%a1a2e +an in his bus! and energetic +o+ents/ It is the 2e! to the develo$+ent of #ill%Po1er and a vigorous intellect/ You are conscious of effort 1hen !ou are exercising this function/ The +ind beco+es exhausted after a great deal of such effort and cries out for rest, because conscious attention i+$lies close concentration of thought and can be exercised onl! b! the conscious use of #ill%Po1er/ You ought to be able to concentrate u$on one subject of thought, stud! and observation 1ith undivided attention and then ta2e !our +ind off that subject and $ut it on so+ething else, at !our 1ill/ Train !our +ind to 3give3 $erfect attention to an! subject !ou li2e and also to 3shut off3 or inhibit all attention on that subject/ The +ind is a restless thing darting fro+ one thing to another, and, li2e a s$oilt child, tiring of continued attention/ 7ut !ou +ust, b! #ill%Exercise, get control over this tendenc!/ 3Exercise develo$s $o1er/ Practice +a2es $erfect/3 This !ou +ust bear in +ind and, b! $atience and $erseverance, train !our +ind to 3$a! attention3 1here it ought to do so and not to $a! attention 1here it ought not to/ At first !our +ind 1ill rebel li2e an unbro2en horse at the i+$osition of such restraint/ 7ut reall! all greatness results fro+ +ind%control/ 'emember active mentation is conscious, deliberate concentration. $assive mentation represents automatic, involuntary thin(ing. This includes the subconscious or 3habit3 +ind/ #hen a certain thought%groove has been for+ed in !our +ind, energ! flo1s into it involuntaril!, i.e., b! itself and 1ithout an! conscious effort on !our $art/ This is $assive +entation/ It is auto+atic +ental activit!/ Ta2e an exa+$le/ So+e school%bo!s find athe+atics, Science and "eogra$h! eas! to +aster fro+ the ver! start/ The! feel @uite in s!+$ath! 1ith the teacher of athe+atics/ 7ut 8istor! and *anguage are their abo+ination/ There are others 1ho si+$l! cannot 3ta2e an interest3 in an! athe+atics but 1ho shine brilliantl! in *anguage, =ecitation, Co+$osition, 8istor!/ As a +atter of fact neither of these students is su$erior to the other, but each is great in his o1n line/ In one set, !ou have an exa+$le of auto+atic +entation in athe+atics, Science and "eogra$h!A in the other in *iterature and Art/ 7ut su$$ose the first set tried to +aster *iterature and Art and the second gra$$led 1ith athe+atics and Science, each 1ould then be $ractising actual concentration/ In each set the active function 1ould be exercised and 1ill%$o1er 1ould develo$ on both sides/ Do !ou see? Occultists sa! that all $o1er results fro+ the continual exercise of active +entation and all 1ea2%+indedness is the direct outco+e of this 1ool%gathering, castle%building, inattentive habit 1hich is an extension of $assive +entation into useless channels of thought%force/ Conscious attention concentrates and even

s$eciali9es +ental energ! as the sun%glass concentrates and intensifies the heat of the ra!s of the sun/ &ocus !our full attention u$on the thing to be done, ta2e a 2een interest in its acco+$lish+ent to the exclusion of all else, and !ou 1ill obtain 1onderful results/ The +an of develo$ed, concentrative $o1er holds in his hand the 2e! to success, 1ith the results that all his actions, voluntar! or involuntar!, are $ointed to the acco+$lish+ent of his object/ =e+e+ber therefore in conclusion:'; Concentration is $erfect attention consciousl! directed to a given $oint of achieve+ent either objectivel! or subjectivel!/ :); Concentration is consecration/ <#hat ever !ou do, do it 1ith all !our +ight/ Do one thing at a ti+e and do it 1ell/< 7! concentration is +eant the directing of all !our energies along a s$ecial line of achieve+ent/ &or instance, if !ou 1ould be a $erfect Yogi, !ou +ust concentrate, concentrate, +orning, noon and night, at all ti+es, along that line of endeavour/ You +ust stud! all the vast literature on Yoga, Ps!cholog!, eta$h!sics, entalis+, etc/, and for+ !our o1n s!nthesis on sa+e/ You +ust thin2 hard and 1or2 hard for Yoga/ <"enius is the $o1er to bear infinite $ain/< 0othing ought to be too great a sacrifice, including !our o1n life, for the right understanding and achieve+ent of Yoga/ All half%heartedness, all insincerit!, 1ea2ens !our nature, and 1ea2ness has no $lace either in heaven or in hell/ &or the half%hearted +an is a traitor unto the Divine 1ithin hi+ and +ust $a! dearl! for his treacher!/ SUBJECTIVE CONCENTRATIONHOW PRACTISED. This is a vast subject/ If !ou $ractise earnestl! +! instructions on Thought%Control, #ill%Culture, and ta2e the editation Exercise I a+ going to give !ou, !ou 1ill reali9e greater strength than average hu+anit!/ 7ut !ou +ust stud! and thin2 hard for !ourself before an! considerable benefit can be derived fro+ even these/ =e+e+ber $lease, !ou alone can teach !ourself through intuition/ Intuition is tuition fro+ 1ithin/ &ollo1 strictl! the general rules I give !ou and !ou cannot but unfold !our Inner Soul Bision 1hich includes intuition in its fullest sense/ )a* +hat is ,hought-.orce/ <Thoughts are things/< Thought is a d!na+ic energ!/ >ust as the food that !ou eat feeds !our bod!, exactl! si+ilarl! !our thoughts and feelings nourish !our soul/ atter is nothing but a concentration of Thought%&orce or ind%Substance/ The entire universe is seen objectivel!/ This is on the cos+ic scale/ On the individual scale.<As a +an thin2eth in his heart, so he is/< This is a literal truth/ Your bod! is nothing but a Thought%&or+/ Control !our +odes of thin2ing and sha$e the+ to loft! ideals/ So 1ill !ou infallibl!, $ositivel! and i++ediatel! control !our destin!/ Control !our thoughts and !ou can control the thoughts of all other +en/ The tone of !our thoughts +ust al1a!s be loft!/ You +ust change !our Thought%8abits and shift !our $lane of consciousness fro+ the lo1er to the higher life/ I a+ going to give !ou hints on sa+e/ Pa! attention $lease/ )b* ,hought-.orms. Ever! one of us, as he thin2s, feels and 1ills, sends forth Thought%&or+s and Thought%#aves of greater or lesser intensit!/ This force once set into +otion $ersists, for a greater or lesser $eriod of ti+e, in Ether/ Thought%&orce is the concentration of a high for+ of vibrator! energ! in the A2asa :universal ether; and the ether, as !ou 2no1, $er+eates all s$ace, inter$enetrates and $ervades all for+s of +atter, fro+ ato+ to the sun and the stars/ >ust as the light%1aves of a star exist and +ove on centuries after the star has ceased to be, just as the heat%vibrations re+ain in a roo+ even after the $roducing cause has been re+oved, si+ilarl! +entative energ! and its corres$onding Thought% &or+s $ersist in the ether even after the originating i+$ulse has been 1ithdra1n/ )c* ,hought-Atmosphere.

In this 1a! $laces, houses, cities and te+$les have $eculiar Thought%At+os$heres of their o1n, i+$arted b! those living there, exerting an influence u$on ever! one living or going there/ These are $ositive, ani+ating, $urif!ing and exalting Thought%At+os$heres, and there are negative, 1ea2ening and unhol!, +orbid Thought%At+os$heres/ The higher and loftier !our tone of general Thought%Activit!, the finer and +ore $o1erful the vibrational nature of the energ! e+anating fro+ !ou/ The @ualit! of the thought deter+ines the rate of vibration/ &or instance, $hotogra$hs have been ta2en through highl!%sensiti9ed $lates, indicating the nature of the energ! generated/ Tongues of fla+e, brilliant and flashing 1ith golden%!ello1, 1ere $hotogra$hed fro+ $ra!er and devotion/ =otar! for+s s$reading out in ever 1idening circles of intense $o1er a$$eared fro+ loft! enthusias+ in a noble cause/ Dar2, +ur2!, cloud! for+s resulted fro+ fear, +orbidness and 1orr!, and so on/ )d* ,he 0uman Aura. Si+ilarl! each hu+an organis+ has an 3Aura3 of Thought%&orce around it, having its o1n $eculiar rate of vibration, its $eculiar for+s of colour, etc/ This 3Aura3 is an extension of our $h!sical, +ental and s$iritual energies/ )e* ,he Adductive $ower of ,hought. 0o1 as !ou thin2, the @ualit! of !our thoughts and feelings sets u$ a +agnetic centre 1ithin !our Aura, vortices are created, attracting to !ourself si+ilar for+s of thought and +entative energ! and co+bining 1ith other si+ilar for+s of energ!, reacting u$on !ou and !our circu+stances and also 1ielding an influence u$on all such as +a! co+e 1ithin its area, radius or field of &orce/ Thus !ou see thoughts of the 3I can and I 1ill3, 3I do and I dare3 t!$e dra1 si+ilar ones to !ou, ever increasing !our o1n stoc2 and at the sa+e ti+e sti+ulating and energising all others vibrating in the sa+e 2e! throughout the 1orld/ 8ence !ou see 1e o1e it to ourselves as 1ell as to hu+anit! in general to generate onl! $ositive, loving and loft! thoughts/ >ust brace u$ and send forth fearless, 3I can and I 1ill3 thoughts into the 1orld3s great reservoir of thought forces, and !ou 1ill be sur$rised at !our $o1er to attract influence, and energise others/ )f* ,hought-Control.
