She was a very powerful woman, who described in newspaper articles the injustices she experienced, encouraged black people not to use the trains, and wrote of false accusations that resulted in the death of black men who were falsely accused of having sexual relations with white women. 1456 Gigi This musical, which reinforces the stereotypes of men and women, begins with Gigi, a girl who is "backwards" because she does not know how to live by societal standards. 1459 Electing Women Discusses the 1980s when a large number of women were running for political office, the trials they faced, and the double standards that were in place for female candidates. Somewhat outdated. 1493 Sex Equality in the College Classroom This film provides some history of women in the college classroom and focuses on the feedback girls receive compared to boys. 1565 Women Inventors Women inventors tend to be more successful than men because they are more willing to ask for help with their projects. This film focuses on three women and their inventions, including a makeup mirror, cerebral palsy software, and a collapsible wooden prawn trap. 1588 Pink Triangles: A Study of Prejudice Against Lesbians and Gay Men Provides a history of discrimination of homosexuals and the history of the pink triangle. It also asks people their opinions of homosexuality. Knowing the differences between a nonsexist approach and a feminist approach is very important. 1680 Eighteenth Century Women Prominent 18th Century women, such as Catherine the Great and Marie Antoinette are discussed in this film, which also focuses on the importance of fashion and appearance. 1715-9 Women in American Life A series of films that discuss the role of women in American history. It also provides some insight into her life. 2052 Going Where I've Never Been After her suicide of photographer Diane Arbus, her daughter became interested in collecting her works. Through this process, she discovered videos of her mother's classes, shot by one of her students. This film provides her pictures as well as words from the classes she taught. 2055 Men and Masculinity A recording of The National Organization for Changing Men's National Conference in Seattle, Washington. Speakers touched on issues such as feminism, gay/bisexual rights, domestic violence, child-care and pornography. 2056 Warning: The Media May Be Hazardous to Your Health From the media, women learn that they must alter themselves to fit in, through dieting, eating disorders, cosmetic surgery, fashion and/or exercises. Discusses the portrayal of women in the media, offering statistics and examples. 2061 Dreamworlds Discusses the basic ways that women are introduced into music videos, as part of the band, back up members or in indistinguishable roles in music. (Some Graphic material) 2070 Life and Times of Rosie the Riveter Women discuss World War II and its impact on their lives, both at home and on the job. 2185 Working Women: The Problems Looks at divorced women in Dallas, TX, which, at the time, had the highest divorce rate (meaning single women). Provides profiles of single women in Dallas and discusses the initial reactions of divorce as well as the implications on these women's lives. The film also discusses the growth of the pornography industry, men's perspective on pornography, and the objectivity of women through this form of entertainment. This film discusses the rise of women in blues music, including the prominent role of Ma Rainey and Mamie Smith. 2324 Tomorrow is a Holiday Documentary of female chicken factory workers in Russia who spend their free time singing together. Following the not guilty verdict of William Kennedy Smith, a man charged with rape in West Palm Beach, Peter Jennings uses the opportunity to discuss rape, through the eyes of men and women. Jennings talks to men and women, victims and offenders, as wells as officers and night club owners. 2514 As I Remember It: A Portrait of Dorothy West Dorothy West, an African-American writer, discusses her life and how it became so intertwined with what she wrote that she was not sure what was real or what was written. The video also mentions other influential African Americans and provides excerpts of their works. 2529 Memory/All Ears An abstract film in which a Korean woman brings together her past through clips of images, words and verses, showing the cultural expectations of women. 2672 Sonia Sanchez: Wear the New Day Well Sonia Sanchez, a writer, lived in Philadelphia at the time of MOVE, a radical African American group that retaliated against society by burning down part of Philadelphia. Her poem, "Elegy: for MOVE and Philadelphia," explains the events in Philadelphia, and she discusses her own reactions. 2607 Mary Lyon: Precious Time Discusses the life of Mary Lyon, an intelligent student and teacher who excelled at learning, especially in Chemistry, who desired to liberate women and believed that women could have a career. She opened a school in 1837(Mount Holy) where women could be educated while taking care of the chores and each other. 2805 Patently Offensive: Porn Under Siege Starts off with short interviews with various people who discuss their views on pornography, then goes through the history of how sexuality has been portrayed over their years. Some GRAPHIC material. 2806 Dorthea Lange Discusses the life of Dorthea Lange, a photographer with polio, who is best known for her pictures of the dust bowl and migrant workers. 2810 Gender: The Enduring Paradox In this video, a psychiatrist discusses the idea that children latch on to the idea of being either a girl or boy, while providing boys' and girls' opinions of each other. It also discusses the biological differences between the sexes and the natural distributions of labor that follow, helping to enforce stereotypes. 2819 Women in the Boardroom: The Case of Mary Cunningham Explores the double standards of women working with men through the case of Mary Cummings, an attractive woman who had thirty-two job offers. When she chose a job, rumors were began circulating that she was having an affair with her boss. Somewhat OUTDATED. 2825 Casting the First Stone A film that examines abortion through people's different perspectives based on their own backgrounds. This film is able to clearly define the issue because it gets viewpoints of people of different ages, classes, backgrounds and situations. 2844 Newswomen Current newswomen discuss sexism in broadcasting, the glass celing and the idea of being seen as ornaments. Somewhat OUTDATED 2849 Sexual Stereotypes in Media: Superman and the Bride This video discusses stereotypes of men and women through words, images, and clips of expectations. Men are seen as "superman" while women are attached to men. Various people on the street are interviewed giving their opinions of men and women. 2858 In Women's Hands: The Changing Roles of Women Discusses women's roles in Chile, where women are expected to be caring and to take care of the family. The video also explores reasons why these roles do not apply to poor women. 2860 Builders of Images: Latin American Cultural Identity Everything around Latin American cultural identity has a masculine perspective. It features a room of business people with different jobs and statuses discussing sexual politics through hypothetical situations. 3012 Amelia Earhart Details her life and her status as the first American heroine. She may not have been the best pilot, but because of the media she was able to attain a higher status. 3048 Clarence Thomas and Anita Hill: Public Hearing, Private Pair This film, made a year after the Clarence Thomas-Anita Hill hearing, moves through the process of Thomas' nomination, describing the effects of the hearings. One of Thomas' friends comments about Thomas' thoughts and actions as the nomination progressed. The video also explores the issue of the all white panel that conducted the hearings. Changing Role and Image of Women This video shows advertisement clips and how they depict women. (Solely commercials with no interpretation, but a good comparison to images of today) Lucy Lewis, Emma Lewis Mitchell, Delores Lewis Garcia: Daughters of Anasazi This video discusses pueblo pottery, showing women producing pottery in the same methods of their ancestors. It also discusses the inspirations of Anasazi pottery. Inlaid Colored Clay with Virginia Cartwright Virginia Cartwright, a mother and artist, presents her artwork and discusses her influences. African Art and Women Artists Discusses the impact of the wasp and other insects on art and its particular value in African art. Discovering the Art of Korea Artwork is shown through narration, which discusses the history of Korea and its impact on art. Sex and Social Dance Looks at dancing through three different cultural perspectives, including American and Polynesian dancing, and how dance has changed over time. The film shows clips of women working in the home and describes their participation in sweatshops and factories. It also discusses the progress of laws and the Uprising of the 20,000 and the Triangle ShirtWaist Factory Fire. 3467 When Abortion Was Illegal Women talk about how pregnancy affected them, and why they chose to have an abortion in a time when abortion was illegal.
