Analysts expect Samsung's 2011 operating profit to remain little changed at 17.4 trillion won this year, while sales were seen up around 9 percent to 169 trillion won, according to a consensus poll by Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.Samsung also said it would continue to aggressively enter new business areas such as health and medical equipment. Samsung Electronics Co. fell the most in 15 months in Seoul stock trading on speculation first- quarter earnings will fall short of estimates, according to an analyst at Shinhan Investment Corp. Samsung Electronics, Asias biggest maker of chips, flat screens and mobile phones, lost 4.1 percent to 906,000 won at the 3 p.m. close on the Korea Exchange, the biggest drop since Nov. 27, 2009. The benchmark Kospi Index (KOSPI) fell 1.2 percent. today. Operating profit may be between 3.1 trillion won ($2.8 billion) and 3.2 trillion won, compared with the consensus analyst estimate of 3.5 trillion won, Kim said. Smart & Connected TV Samsung Electronics is actively promoting Smart TV to compete with Sony's Google TV and aims to ship 12 million units in 2011, accounting for 30% of the global Smart TV shipments. The global LCD TV market is expected to reach 215 million, up 13% on year. LED-backlit models are expected to account for 40-50% of the global LCD TV market and 30-40% for Smart TVs.

Connected TV Application Store Samsung is the first TV maker to announce its own dedicated app store for TV apps. The store today has announced that two new apps are coming with apps from HBO and MTV. The HBO app is HBO Go. It allows the user to get access to over 1400 HBO movie and show choices along with the soundtrack to the show and details about the cast. The app will be in the store for download later this year. The SDK for Samsung Smart TV developers will be offered to make developing apps for Samsung users easier. Samsung will also launch a new remote app this year that allows the Galaxy S and Tab to turn into a second TV screen and be used as a remote. Over 100 million apps have been downloaded from Samsung Electronics' mobile and TV app store in less than a year after its launch, the company said Thursday. on the marketplace. Apple's App Store, by comparison, has already seen over 10 billion downloads since it opened July 8, 2008, for devices including the iPhone, iPad and iPod. There are 350,000 iPhone apps and 65,000 iPad apps currently available at the store. 3D Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics, respectively the world's largest and second largest flat-screen TV makers, each claim their technology offers more vivid images and wider viewing angles. The two firms, both driven by newly-appointed leaders, are striving to set the 3-D industry standard. LG champions a technology called film-patterned retarder (FPR), while Samsung uses so-called active shutter glass technology. Samsung is launching a 3D video-ondemand service in Korea, the company announced today. The service is debuting with content from film studio DreamWorks. It will offer 3D films, movie trailers, and music videos. It will also include children's content. Users access the service via Samsung Apps, the marketplace that the consumer electronics giant makes available on some of its HDTVs. The Samsung marketplace, which allows users to access apps from the likes of Hulu Plus, Netflix, Facebook, and Blockbuster, is off to a good start. In December, about nine months after the marketplace opened up, Samsung announced that consumers had downloaded 1 million applications. Less than two months later, the company said that its store had hit 2 million downloads. Samsung seems to be sitting at the forefront of what could be an explosion in 3D programming. Samsung, which also has a huge stage in the glasses-required 3D market and has a higher maket share thn all over 3D TV makers, has juse demoed a new 55-inch display that doesn't require glasses, according to TrustedReviews.com

Samsung Electronics Co.s venture arm invested $15 million in MasterImage 3D Inc., a closely held maker of 3-D displays for mobile devices and movietheater screens, the companies said in a joint statement. MasterImage, based in Los Angeles, California, is working with mobile device makers to incorporate its glasses-free 3-D technology into smartphones and tablet computers, said Younghoon Lee, chief executive officer of MasterImage. MasterImage, Sharp Corp. and others use a type of technology called parallax barrier to deliver slightly different images to each eye, creating the effect of viewing content in three dimensions. Samsung Venture Investment Corp. and MasterImage declined to comment on whether Samsung plans to use the companys technology in future devices. We are committing this investment to innovation, specifically to advancing our 3D solutions for cinema, smartphones, tablets, and larger autostereoscopic displays, Lee said in the statement. We will continue to build toward our vision of 3D on every screen. Sharp sells a type of 3-D technology called striped parallax barrier. Thats used in Nintendo Co.s new 3DS handheld, which goes on sale in the U.S. March 27. MasterImages method is called cell-matrix parallax barrier, and it differs from competitors by letting viewers see the 3-D effect in landscape or portrait mode and with a wider viewing angle. MasterImage also competes with RealD Inc. (RLD) and Dolby Laboratories Inc. (DLB) for global sales of 3D movie equipment. Industry leader RealD said it had installed cinema systems on 11,300 screens through the quarter ended Dec. 24. MasterImage has 3,000 cinema systems installed, said Julie Miller, spokeswoman for the company.

SmartPhone Samsung Electronics is luring developers working on Nokia's Symbian platform to change sides as the Finnish

company is to abandon this platform. Nokia, the world's largest handset maker, said last month it would replace Symbian with Microsoft's Windows Phone to challenge Apple and Google in the fast-growing smartphone industry. Google and Skype have said openly they are seeking to tap into Finnish engineering talent looking for new jobs following Nokia's announcement. Earlier this week, Nokia started talks with Finnish employees over its new strategy, which unions fear could cost more than 5,000 jobs in the Nordic country, many of which will be engineers working on Symbian software. "There are clear similarities between Symbian and Bada for developers," said analyst Geoff Blaber from British consultancy CCS Insight. "Bada will view Symbian's demise as an opportunity to capture developers. With Android dominating low-tier smartphone development, Bada looks an increasingly attractive alternative if it can accelerate its move down the price curve to fill the Symbian void," Blaber said. The platform is at the heart of Samsung's drive to boost its smartphone market share, develop new revenue sources from its own Samsung App store, and create synergies with other areas such as its TV business, ranked the world's largest. Samsung is the top handset manufacturer overall with 24.9 percent market share in January in the US, according to a study by comScore. Google Android took the lead among smartphone platforms with 31.2 percent market share, after two short months in second place. About 234 million Americans, ages thirteen and older used mobile devices. Device manufacturer Samsung ranked as the top OEM with 24.9 percent of US mobile subscribers, up 0.7 percentage points from the three month period ending in October. LG ranked second with 20.8 percent share, down 0.2 percentage points, followed by Motorola with 16.5 percent, down 1.2

percentage points, RIM with 8.6 percent, down 0.7 percentage points and Apple with 7 percent, up 0.6 percentage points. About 65.8 million people in the US owned smartphones during the three months ending in January, up 8 percent from the preceding three-month period. Google Android captured the number one rank among smartphone platforms for the first time in January with 31.2 percent market share. RIM ranked second with 30.4 percent market share, followed by Apple with 24.7 percent. Microsoft with 8 percent and Palm with 3.2 percent rounded out the top five. Industrial Design Chris Bangle, the former head of BMW design, will work with Samsung, the Korean consumer electronics giant, on such projects as mobile phones and computing devices, according to reports from Korea. Samsung reportedly will set up a European studio for Bangle. The Korean company has established a global reputation for design excellence.

Global sales of 3-D TVs will probably climb more than fivefold to about 17 million sets this year from 3 million in 2010, Yoon Boo Keun, head of Samsungs digital media division, said Dec. 23. Fitch Ratings has revised LG Electronics's (LGE) Outlooks to Stable from Positive. Its Long-term Foreign and Local Currency Issuer Default (IDR) ratings have been affirmed at 'BBB'. Its senior unsecured rating has also been affirmed at 'BBB'. The Outlook revision to Stable reflects LGE's weakened operating results and financial profile for FY10, and Fitch's view that the company's financials will not improve sufficiently to justify an upgrade over the next 12-18 months.

Energy Natural Gas South Korea's Samsung Engineering Co. said Tuesday it had signed a $2.76 billion deal to build a natural gas liquid complex in eastern Saudi Arabia. The Strategy Analytics Wireless Smartphone Strategies service predicts that, due to Samsung's track record with Android and Microsoft and an overall 30 percent market share in handsets, smartphone share growth is somewhat inevitable for Samsung. "Samsung can benefit from the enhanced WP7 ecosystem arising from the Microsoft / Nokia partnership in the US," said Martin Bradley, Associate Director for the Strategy Analytics Wireless Smartphone Strategies service. "However, if Microsoft's support to Nokia is highly effective in improving Nokia's share, Samsung could consider a more targeted approach for WP7 within its portfolio." In other words, Nokia's success with WP7 could determine Samsung's future handset strategy. New Production Hub - Vietnam Nokia, the world's largest phone maker by volume, will build a new plant in Vietnam to strengthen its hold of the growth markets, the company said on Wednesday. The cost of the new site near Hanoi, due to open in 2012, is around 200 million euros ($276.3 million), and further investments will follow, said the world's largest cellphone maker by volume. Investment to Taiwan Taiwan will for the first time allow Chinese investors to take stakes in its prized technology companies, a major step towards opening its economy to mainland China as cross-Strait relations improve. Taiwan's Ministry of Economic Affairs has proposed allowing Chinese investment of up to 10 per cent in Taiwanese technology companies, and up to 50 per cent in new technologysector joint ventures, one person familiar with the situation said. The new rules would give Chinese investors access to some of Taiwan's most globally competitive companies. Taiwanese manufacturers, for example,

make 9 out of every 10 notebook computers in the world. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company is the world's biggest contract chipmaker, while Hon Hai, also known as Foxconn, is the world's largest electronics manufacturing services provider. For Taiwanese companies, the new rules will make it easier to forge strategic alliances with their customers or suppliers in China, which is already by far Taiwan's biggest export market. AU Optronics, the world's third-biggest flat-panel maker, is for example increasingly selling to Chinese TV brands such as Haier and Changhong and recently received approval from Taipei to set up its firstever plant in China. Storage Media Worldwide external disk storage systems factory revenues posted yearover-year growth of 16.2%, totaling just under $6.1 billion, in the fourth quarter of 2010 (4Q10), according to the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Disk Storage Systems Tracker. For the quarter, the total disk storage systems market grew to just shy of $8.3 billion in revenues, representing 14.3% growth from the prior year's fourth quarter. Total disk storage systems capacity shipped reach 5,127 petabytes, growing 55.7% year over year. Factory revenues for the total disk storage systems market grew by 18.0% to $28.7 billion in 2010 compared to 2009. HP and EMC are the leading vendors, finishing the full year in a statistical tie* at 19.0% of the market each, followed by IBM and Dell with 16.0% and 11.9% share, respectively.

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers has approved IEEE 802.16m, the standard for the next generation of WiMax, which may deliver downstream speeds of more than 300M bps (bits per second).

Earthquake Japan plays a central role in the hightech and consumer electronics industries, home to heavyweights such as Sony, Toshiba, and Nintendo. Many U.S. and European tech companies also have significant offices and operations in Japan. Overall, Japanese factories produced $216 billion worth of electronics last year, according to market analysis firm IHS iSuppli. That includes 16.5 percent of worldwide consumer electronics factory revenue. The supply of flash memory chips, a principal component in hot-selling tablets and smartphones, will likely be affected by the earthquake in Japan, according to a report. But the factories that manufacture flash are well to the south of the quake's epicenter, possibly mitigating the impact. Over 40 percent of the world's NAND flash and roughly 15 percent of the world's DRAM are manufactured in Japan, according to a report released today by Objective Analysis, a firm that does semiconductor-related market research. Japans grip on the global electronics supply chain is causing particular concern. Japan exported 7.2 trillion yen (US$91.3 billion) worth of electronic parts last year, according to Mirae Asset Securities. Should the Japan 17

crisis be prolonged, I expect a shortage of electronic parts in the second quarter, said James Song, an analyst at Daewoo Securities, noting that Japan provides 57 per cent of global needs for wafers, which are key materials used to make chips. Goldman Sachs analysts warned of potential bottlenecks in the supply of silicon wafers, conductive film used in LCD circuits and resin used to connect chips to boards, products made by Japanese companies such as Shin Etsu and divisions of Sony, Hitachi and Mitsubishi . In Taipei, shares of electronics supply companies rebounded from recent falls, with Hon Hai Precision and touch panel maker Wintek both gaining more than one per cent. China LCD TV Market Through promotions such as the rural subsidy program, demand for LCD TVs in China surged to almost 40 million units in 2010 surpassing the US to became the largest LCD TV market worldwide, according to data from research firms. Local vendors including Changhong, Haier, Hisense, Konka, Skyworth and TCL accounted for thirdquarters of the China LCD TV market, and 15% of TV panel shipments. Chimei Innolux (CMI) accounted for the highest market share in the TV panel market in China in 2010, followed by LG Display and Samsung Electronics. CMI accounted for 32% of the total TV panel demand from the top-six TV vendors in 2010, 21% for LG Display and 18% for Samsung. Taiwan-based panel makers accounted for 52% of the total TV panel shipments to the top-six TV vendors, and 39% for Korea-based panel makers. Due to pressure to reduce costs, vendors increased purchase ratios for cell-panels to 26% in 2010 and are expected to increase to 46% in 2011. Looking into 2011, China LCD TV demand is expected to exceed 45 million units, up almost 20% on year, and China-based vendors are

expected to continue to increase their market share.

Transparent LCD Samsung announced today that it has become the first company to begin mass production of transparent LCD panels. AUO

Panel Business AU Optronics (AUO) has posted consolidated revenues of NT$27.1 billion (US$922.65 million) for February 2011, an decrease of 10.2% sequentially and 17.1% on year. Consolidated revenues for the first two months of 2011 totaled NT$57.28 billion, down 19.2% on year. With fewer work days due to the Lunar New Year holiday in the moth, large-size panel shipments decreased by 13% sequentially to 8.23 million units. Shipments of small- to medium-size panels decreased 15.7% sequentially to 12.22 million units. Shares in Taiwan's AU Optronics jumped as much as 6 percent on Thursday after a report that the world's No.4 LCD maker has won an order to provide flat panel screens for Apple's.

OLED Samsung Mobile Display said today that it would place new shares worth 3.4 trillion won (RM9.12 billion) to its shareholders Samsung Electronics Co and Samsung SDI to boost production of next-generation mobile displays. The 50-50 joint venture is the worlds top producer of organic light-emitting diodes (OLED), a display in severe short supply due to strong demand from high-end mobile gadgets such as smartphones and tablets. Samsung Mobile Display said the breakdown of the share placement between its parent companies had yet to be decided.

LG Display 3D panel Flat-screen maker LG Display said on Thursday it was in talks to provide 3D TV panels to Sony Corp, as it seeks to muster allies amid an intensifying feud over the 3D market with bigger rival Samsung. Production in China AU Optronics (AUO) may see faster progress in its TFT-LCD panel mass production in China than its Koreabased competitors, as the government in Taiwan has lifted all restrictions on its companies acquiring or investing in China-based LCD panel makers. The main reason for the Taiwan government to lift all restrictions on panel investment in China is to improve Taiwan's competitiveness in the global

19

BUSINESS AND TECHNOLOGY REPORT

TFT-LCD panel market and to create greater revenues for Taiwan's TFT-LCD industry. With the Korea government having allowed its panel makers to invest in China without any restrictions, the Taiwan government's previous restrictions set a huge obstacle to Taiwan panel makers' development in China. But the change of policy means that Taiwan panel makers may now build their own plants in China or invest in the country's existing makers. China's National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) so far has only approved applications for 7.5G and more advanced plants from BOE, China Star OptoELectronics Technology (CSOT) and Infovision Optelectronics Kunshan. Digitimes Research believes AUO is looking to acquire or invest in Infovision. If it cannot work out a deal to acquire or invest in Infovision, AUO will need to apply to the NDRC for approval of a plan to set up its own 7.5G plant in Kunshan, China. Meanwhile, Korea-based panel makers have turned conservative about investing in China, as both Samsung Electronics and LG Display made losses for their TFT-LCD panel businesses, and may delay mass production in China - currently scheduled for the first half of 2012. Earthquake impacts The supply of anisotropic conductive film (ACF) for the production of flat panels is likely to be affected by the earthquake that hit Japan on March 11, but with a month of inventory, AU Optronics (AUO) expects no short term supply issues as long as Japan-based suppliers regain normal production as soon as possible, according to Paul Peng, executive vice president of AUO. Japan-based makers account for 70% of the global ACF supply, Peng added, saying that Japan-based makers tried to resume production on March 15, but were affected by rolling black-outs. Panel prices are expected to start rising in the second quarter of 2011. With

transportation and communication not fully recovered, the supply of upstream materials remains unclear, and the overall effects on the panel industry in the second quarter of 2011 is also uncertain, Peng indicated. Peng noted that affects to the Labor Day holiday in May in China remain unclear, but current TV inventory level is healthy and it is not seeing signs of vendors stocking up inventory. Market sources added that panel demand and prices will remain at the bottom in the first quarter of 2011, but with the risk of material supply and panel inventory shortages rising, it may generate early replenishment demand from downstream clients. Patent Issues Taiwan's AU Optronics <2409.TW>, the world's No.4 LCD maker, said on Thursday it has filed two lawsuits against Japan's Sharp Corp <6753.T> and its U.S. unit over patent infringement. The Taiwan company said in a statement that the suits cover nine patents. Infringing products include Sharp's Quattron series LCD TVs, which use a multi-primary colour display solution AU said it invented. AUO said it is seeking an unspecified amount of damages and permanent injunctions against the infringing products. It filed the suits in Delaware and California.

Touchscreen AU Optronics (AUO) has no plans to spin off its touch panel business unit as clients like to see the effectiveness of integrated production, according to company chairman KY Lee. Lee made the remarks amid market reports indicating that rival Chimei Innolux (CMI) plans to split its flat panel business into three units. Additionally, AUO plans to add more value-added functionalities to its touch panels and also to further integrate the touchpanel production with other flat panels,

Lee said. The AUO Group as a whole plans to recruit 5,000 more employees in 2011, with AUO alone providing more than 3,000 job opportunities, said Lee, indicating that the group will continue to ramp up its panel capacity, including OLED panels. AUO will begin the production of OLED displays in 2011 although there are still bottlenecks regarding the reduction of raw material costs and power consumption for the panels, Lee stated. AUO's solar wafer plant is slated for volume production in the fourth quarter of 2011 and the company will also kick off a NT$73 billion (NT$2.48 billion) investment project for the manufacture of solar cell modules. Revenues generated from solar related products will account for less than 5% of the company's total revenues in 2011 and the company aims to raise the ratio to 10% within 2-5 years. Renewable Energy- Solar Panel Taiwan-based Darfon Electronics, an affiliate of the AUO (AU Optronics) Group, has stepped into PV silver paste and PV inverters, both used in making PV modules from crystalline silicon solar cells, and has begun production of the former and will do so for the latter in the third quarter of 2011, according to company president Andy Su at a March 4 investors conference. The production is in line with AUO's PV business development and technically through applying in-house manufacturing know-how of TV inverters to making PV inverters as well as that of silver treatment in MLCC (multi-layer ceramic capacitors) production to making PV silver taste, Su explained. Shipments of PV silver paste will take off in terms of volume in the second or third quarter of 2011, Su noted. Among existing product lines, Darfon remains as a leading supplier of illuminated notebook keyboards and external keyboards used in tablets and all-in-one PCs, with total shipments expected to increase from 60 million

units in 2010 to 70 million units in 2011, Su indicated. Energy Management Following the acknowledgment of the world's first LEED gold-certified TFTLCD facility in 2009, AU Optronics (AUO) announced today that its 8.5G facility located in Central Taiwan Science Park (CTSP) has passed ISO 50001 standard for energy management. AUO is the world's first TFT-LCD manufacturer to have obtained this certification, again demonstrating the company's achievements in green practice.

CMI Panel Business CMI shipped 9.7 million large-size LCD panels in February, a decrease of 10.7% sequentially. Shipments for small- to medium-size panels totaled 29.3 million units, a decrease of 14.9% sequentially. Capex of Chimei Innolux (CMI) in 2011 is expected to reach NT$100 billion (US$3.4 billion), mainly for expanding capacity at its 6G, 8.5G and touch panel production lines.

3D Panel Chimei Innolux (CMI) has showcased a series of 3D display panels covering from 23.6- to 65-inch at the FPD China 2011, and the company expects to account for 20% of the three million units of 3D TV market in China in 2011. CMI's investment in China totaled US$1 billion at the end of 2010 with over ten invested companies, Wang noted, adding that CMI will focus on production in China in the future.

Production in China Chimei Innolux (CMI) has submitted its application for the establishment of an 8.5G flat panel plant in China to the 21

National Development and Reform Commission for approval, according CMI president Wang Jyh-chau. CMI will not rush to build the planned 8.5G plant in China due to a current oversupply of flat panels, but it has to secure a license to catch up with rivals such as LG Display, Wang noted. CMI's total investment in China reached US$1 billion as of the end of 2010. The company plans to add an additional investment of US$500 million to ramp up its backend module capacity soon, according to industry sources. However, CMI will need to pour in an extra of US$3-4 billion in capital for front-end panels production, the sources noted. Earthquake impacts The supply of upstream materials for flat panel production will sufficient in the short term but may become uncertain in one or two months as the Japan government has started implementing power brownout controls, according to Wang Jyh-chau, president of Chimei Innolux. While CMI has already piled up a 1-2 month raw material inventory, it has begun to strengthen the supply of key components and materials as the whole flat panel supply chain counts on the rehabilitation process at Japan, Wang noted. However, a short supply of upstream materials may help push the industry to reach a balance between supply and demand and even trigger a wave of price hikes for panels, Wang asserted. Chimei currently purchases upstream anisotropic conductive films from three companies, including one in Japan and two in Korea and also has stockpiled sufficient silicon wafers, according to the company.

forced to close down its LCD assembly line at a plant near Tokyo for a month, a Toshiba spokeswoman said on Thursday. Another LCD maker, Hitachi, has also been forced to halt production at one of its factories, and Sony and Panasonic have also suspended operations at several of their plants. NEC Smartphones Panels Amid the surging demand for smartphones and other applications for small- to medium-size panels, the overall small- to medium-size industry is changing with NEC to turn wholly owned NEC LCD Technologies into a joint venture with China-based Shanghai Tianma Micro-Electronics, while Toshiba Mobile Display (TMD) sold its 4.5G LTPS Singapore subsidiary to AU Optronics (AUO), and Hitachi is in talks with Foxconn Electronics (Hon Hai Prevision Industry) for cooperation. NEC has reached an agreement with Tianma to cooperate for small- to medium-size LCD business, and will sell a 70% stake in NEC LCD Technologies in July and turn the LCD company into a joint venture. NEC believes that the cooperation will help to combine NEC's product development and design ability with Tianma's mass production experience, and strengthen the competitiveness of their products. Tianma mainly focuses on handset panel production, while NEC LCD Technologies mainly focuses on medical and industrial panel production. Tianma accounted for about 3.2% of the global small- to medium-size panel market in 2010, and was the leading small- to medium-size panel maker in China, ranking 11th in the global market, while NEC LCD Technologies accounted for 0.3% and ranked 21st.

Energy Nuclear Energy The Japan Bank for International Cooperation is considering helping fund overseas projects worth $40 billion led by Inpex Corp. (1605) and Toshiba Corp. (6502), as Japans government aims to boost exports of equipment and technology. JBIC may offer loans to Toshiba, which has exclusive rights to negotiate to build a nuclear power station in Turkey, and plans to provide a preliminary loan commitment to Inpex for its Ichthys liquefied natural gas project in Australia, said Tadashi Maeda, head of corporate planning at the state-owned bank. Japan is pushing companies such as Toshiba and Hitachi Ltd. to compete with rivals including Korea Electric Power Corp. (KEP) and Areva SA (CEI) for overseas nuclear projects to aid the nations economic recovery. Ichthys, due to start in 2016, would be the largest energy project operated by a Japanese company. Toshiba, the biggest Japanese maker of power generation machinery, and the countrys trade ministry last year won the right to negotiate exclusively with Turkey until March 31 to build the power plant on the Black Sea coast, which may cost as much as $20 billion. The talks commenced after Turkey failed to conclude negotiations with a group led by Korea Electric because of differences over ownership structure and power pricing.

the maximum power point and maintain its operation at excellent efficiency under any weather or shading conditions. With a micro inverter attached to the PV module, users will not be required to purchase and install a big inverter around the house, and the solar powered system can be easily expanded, monitored, maintained and set up. For safety considerations, the output voltage of an ACPV installation is kept at 240 V, only one-third of the traditional PV system output. By installing AUOs solar monitoring software, users can receive real-time updates of power output data through mobile, computer, and other 3C products. PV Deployment in Germany Due to the German government's successive cuts on feed-in-tariff (FIT) for photovoltaic (PV) solar systems, the country's internal rate of return (IRR) for investments in solar systems has retreated to a level unattractive for consumers. Demand has cooled off in the past six months and the system installation was particularly disappointing in the fourth quarter of 2010. Germany is the world's largest PV market. Though it still installed 7.2GW in 2010 versus 3.8GW in 2009, demand was clearly down in the second half when the government reduced FIT in both the third and fourth quarters. System installation in October, November and December fell 10%, 28% and 20% on year, respectively, to 340.5MWp, 359.9MWp and 1,174MWp. Overall fourth quarter installation dropped 19.76% from a year earlier. To put the figures into perspective, Germany installed 2,126MWp in January of 2010.
