LCD will account for more than 82% of all global TV shipments in 2011, rising to more than 88% in 2012, as demand for plasma falls and OLED TVs arrive late in the year in small quantities and at high prices. LED Backlight Due to lower-than-expected consumer adoption of LED-backlit LCD TVs, TV makers have changed their strategy to develop a product that utilizes less power and lowers costs, according to the latest findings of DisplaySearch. TV makers are reducing the number of LEDs per TV set. In turn, this also lowers brightness and moves away from the slim designs and higher picture quality that have been characteristic traits of LED-backlit LCD TVs, said DisplaySearch. "LED penetration in LCD TVs was 7pp lower than our forecast a year ago, mainly due to high LED premiums. The premium for a LED backlight in a 32inch LCD TV was 42% in the fourth quarter of 2011, although it had been expected to fall to 27%," said Yoshio Tamura, senior vice president, DisplaySearch. "Therefore, TV makers

are changing their strategies on direct LED-backlit TVs. Instead of high picture quality, set makers have chosen lowpower consumption with a corresponding lower price as selling points for this new type of LED-backlit TVs. This will increase its competitiveness with CCFL-backlit LCD TVs and even CRT TVs." The materials cost for direct LED backlights comes closer to that of CCFL backlights. DisplaySearch estimates that for 32inch LCD TVs, direct LED backlights cost 1.3-1.4 times CCFL backlights, as opposed to edge-lit LED backlights, which are estimated to cost more than twice as much as CCFL backlights. For 40-inch LCD TVs, the savings could be even greater, with low-cost direct backlights cutting nearly US$40 in material costs, which could result in as much as US$100 in savings at retail. TV makers have been planning to introduce new models causing demand for LED backlights to increase in December 2011. In addition, small- and medium-size products will likely show growth in February, which will also help the LED backlight market to rebound.

Plasma TV Market Plasma TV units grew 30% in 2010 due to a favorable pricing advantage over LCD, but as that advantage has narrowed in 2011, shipments are expected to fall 11%, to 16.3 million units. The decline in unit growth and weak profits have led manufacturers to focus on more profitable segments, even at the expense of unit growth. As a result, plasma TV shipments are projected to fall to less than 10 million units by 2015.

OLED TV The first OLED TV shipments are expected in the second half of 2012, but due to prices that are expected to be well above $4000 initially and remain significantly higher than

mainstream high-end LCD TVs, will only grow to about 2.5% of the 40+ segment by 2015. 3DTV The worldwide forecast for 3D TVs was slightly increased to more than 23M units in 2011 through better than expected growth in emerging markets and Europe. By contrast, demand in North America has been surprisingly soft for 3D, and may only reach 3.6 million units in 2011 as US consumers remain very price sensitive. Eventually though, North America will see a rise in 3D adoption due to stronger preference for 40+ sizes where the 3D feature is common and expected to be less costly. Globally, 3D TV is expected rise to more than 100M units shipped by 2015.

explosive growth to the already red hot Smart TV market. The increasing adoption of fixed broadband (and proliferation of wired and wireless home networking); the rapidly-growing installed base of IPconnected CE devices (forecast to reach 2.5bn in 2012 and 3.5bn in 2015); a broad understanding of how to secure content distribution in iOS and Android applications; openstandard encryption protocols such as DLNA Premium Video (DTCP-IP); new content distribution contracts that include provisos for multi-screen distribution; and several key hardware innovations, such as adaptive transcoding and ultra-high-bandwidth modems.

LCD TV Prices With the prices of large-size LCD TVs continuing to fall in North America and Taiwan, coupled with capacity ramps by China-based panel makers, price competition in the large-size TV segment is expected to become increasingly fierce in 2012, according to industry sources. According to market data, the prices of 40- and 42-inch LCD TVs in North America have dropped to below US$500, and Sharp even launched 60-inch CCFL models for US$799 and LED-backlit ones for US$999. Since the prices of 32-models have hit the bottom, the price erosion is then expected to extend to large-size models in 2012, the sources commented, adding that demand for TVs with display sizes of over 55-inch is expected to reach 11.5 million units in 2015 compared to 7.3 million units in 2011.

Smart TV The overall smart TV market was worth $86 billion in 2010 and is expected to reach $265 billion by the end of 2016 with a CAGR of 17%. In terms of unit shipment, smart TV was valued at 43.6 million units in 2010 and is expected to reach 64 million by the end of 2011 with an annual growth of 47%. By 2016, smart TV unit shipment is expected to reach 153.2 million units with a CAGR of 19%. According to the Topology Research Institute's most recent report, as more brands continue to release Smart TVs, worldwide shipments of Smart TVs in the next two years could double. In 2011 alone, 25.18 million Smart TVs were sold worldwide, accounting for 10.4% of overall TV sales. In 2012, that number is set to double to at least 52.85 million units. A yearly growth of 100% means that by the end of 2012, Smart TVs will account for 20% of overall TV sales. The report went on to say that as "smart" becomes the new catchword in electronics, the addition of 3D and LED innovative hardware features is set to bring about more
