Lalith K. Chairman, KIK (Pvt) Ltd That was a good question! I feel that "Metal Clad"is used for switchgear made with housings specially designed and made for that switchgear, and "Metal Enclosed"was used for switchgear or assemblies that are assembled inside standard metal enclosures. However, I too wish to know the correct definition, is there is any. RAO G. Consultant Electrical Installation Audit Cladding means covering with clothe as per Oxford dictionary http://oxforddictionaries.com/definition/english/clad?q=clad Hence metal clad means enclosed by metal. In other words metal clad and metal enclosed could mean the same. SASIKUMAR V. Head - Business Development & Technical Services at Raychem RPG Private Limited Metal clad and metal enclosed have very specifc difference. The basic is that Metal clad SASIKUMARswitchgear is one where the different chambers of the switchgear panel ( like breaker chamber, bus bar chamber, LT Chamber, Cable chamber etc ) are seperated by metal sheets. The metal enclosed switchgear is one in which the enclosure is only specified as metal. Thanks V. Sasikumar, Mobile : +91 9538880208 Livingston K. Electrical Engineering Technician

I agree with you Dr Pillai. There is a specific difference to these two. New people in the trade may assume its the same, but there is quite some difference as explained by the professor above. Biju M. Switchgear Factory Supervisor at HAJI ALI HAJI CO.W.L.L. Metal-clad switchgear is a specific type of metal-enclosed switchgear. While all metal-clad switchgear is metal-enclosed, not all metal-enclosed switchgear can be classified as metal-clad. The main switching and interrupting device is removable (drawout), with a mechanism to move it between connected and disconnected positions, and equipped with self-aligning and self-coupling primary disconnecting devices and disconnectable control wiring connections. Major parts of the primary circuit are completely enclosed by grounded metal barriers that have no intentional openings between compartments. A metal barrier shall be included in front of or part of the circuit interrupting device to ensure that when in the connected position, no primary circuit components are exposed by the opening of a door. Metal-enclosed Switchgear which is surrounded by a metal case or housing, usually grounded.

manzoor A. QA QC Engineer at Saudi Aramco Manzoor Alam. Metal-Clad Switchgear is an assembly of units characterized by the following features: The main interrupting device is removable and arranged with a mechanism for moving it physically between connected and disconnected positions. It is equipped with self-aligning and self-coupling primary and secondary disconnecting devices. The interrupting devices, buses, voltage transformers, and control power transformers, are completely enclosed by grounded metal barriers, which have no intentional openings between compartments. A metal barrier in front of the interrupting device ensures that when, in the connecting position, no live parts are exposed by the opening of an enclosure door. All live parts are enclosed within grounded metal compartments. The Metal enclosed switchgear assembly consists of multiple metal-enclosed, vertical sections. Normally the end sections are designed to allow for installation of future sections. Each vertical section consists of up to four individually enclosed breaker or auxiliary compartments. Compartments are sized to provide uniform height of each switchgear assembly. Various components such as circuit breakers, instrumentation and control equipment, transformers, relays, three-phase bus work, all internal wiring, connectors, and other supporting equipment are included in each assembly. These units can be directly coupled to 480V motor control centers if desired Mohamad I. Electrical Engr. at ABV Rock Group main differance metal closed type is fixed mounted switching and interrupting devices are allowed and metal cladding switching and interrupting device are drawout mounted
