EXEMPLAR GUIDANCE ON CONTROLLED ASSESSMENT Reactivity Series SAMPLE QUALITATIVE CAT Determine the order of reactivity of four metals

s (copper, zinc, calcium and metal M) from the observations of their reactions with a dilute mineral acid (hydrochloric or sulfuric acid) or from observations of displacement reactions using solutions of a salt of the metal and solid metal. Candidates should be given the opportunity to plan and carry out an investigation which will lead them to a reactivity series for the four metals. NB: Metal M is magnesium. Candidates should plan to carry out preliminary experiments to determine a method of judging reactivity from the chemical reactions. Possible methods could be: Carry out reactions of a small quantity of the solid metal with 10 cm3 of dilute hydrochloric acid. Carry out reactions of a small quantity of the solid metal with 10 cm3 of dilute sulfuric acid. Carry out reactions of a small quantity of the solid metal with 10 cm3 of solutions containing the other metal ions. These may be carried out on a micro-chemistry scale using spotting tiles with a very small volume (1 cm3) of the acid/solution with a very small piece of the solid metal. Note: These are only suggested methods. Candidates should be encouraged to engage with the scientific process by making their own planning decisions. During the controlled assessment task (CAT), candidates must complete Part A: Planning and Risk Assessment and Part B: Data Collection in the Pupil Response Booklet A, enclosed with this document. Part A is to be carried out under medium supervision and is formally assessed. Part B is to be carried out under limited supervision and is not formally assessed. Candidates must complete Part C: Processing, Analysis and Evaluation in the Pupil Response Booklet B enclosed with this document. Part C of the CAT is carried out under high control and is formally assessed. Confidentiality The guidance notes and subsequent Candidate Response Booklet B must be kept confidential at all times and stored in a secure place, e.g. a metal lockable cabinet. Health and Safety Centres must ensure that all health and safety issues are addressed and that teachers supervise candidates to ensure that there is compliance with the necessary health and safety requirements during the data collection part of the CAT. Marking Part A of the CAT should be marked using the generic mark descriptors for Planning and Risk Assessment as detailed in section 6.6 of the specification. Part C of the CAT should be marked using the mark scheme provided.

Please refer to the specification for more detailed guidance on the procedures and controls for carrying out the controlled assessment task (CAT). EXEMPLAR CANDIDATE RESPONSE BOOKLET A PLANNING (12 MARKS)

RISK ASSESSMENT (6 MARKS)

Results Candidates should provide a table of results to record results. No marks are awarded for the recording of results.

EXEMPLAR CANDIDATE RESPONSE BOOKLET B 1. Use your results to explain what you found out in your investigation and whether or not this agreed with the hypothesis you made at the start. Use data from your results to support your answer. ___________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________ [5] 2.(a) Write one word equation for a reaction of a named metal which occurred during your investigation. ________________________________________________________ [2] (b) Write one balanced symbol equation for a different reaction for a named metal which occurred during your investigation. ________________________________________________________ [3] 3. Explain as fully as possible how you made sure that your investigation was a fair test. (Include in your answer what you understand by a fair test in terms of your investigation.) ___________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________ [3] 4. Suggest two possible sources of error in your investigation. State how you could improve on your method to minimise one of these sources of error. ___________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________ [3]

SECONDARY DATA The metals X and Y in the following results sets represent other metals which were not used in your investigation. The letters X and Y do not represent symbols for the elements. Results Set A The table below shows if a reaction occurred () or did not occur () between two unknown metals X and Y and sample of the solid metal and dilute hydrochloric acid. Metal X Y Reaction with dilute hydrochloric acid

Results Set B The table shows the observations for the reactions of two unknown metals X and Y with dilute sulfuric acid. Metal X Reaction with dilute sulfuric acid very vigorous reaction; bubbles of gas produced; heat released; X disappears no reaction

Results Set C The table below shows if a reaction occurred () or did not occur () between two unknown metals X and Y with solutions containing different metal ions. Metal ion Metal X Y 5. M2+ Cu2+ Zn2+ Ca2+

Using the reactivity series you developed from your investigation and results set C above, expand the reactivity series to include X and Y.
