Article: Olympic Athletes May Use iPhones Without Restriction During Opening Ceremony Says IOC

by Edwin Ruiz - Thursday, 20 February 2014, 03:20 PM

The rumor of Samsung requesting the Olimpic Committee to advice the athletes to cover any logos on devices made by competitors is an understanable request. Samsung pays millions of dollars to sponsor the Olimpics. Part of the reason why they sponsor them in the first place is to have the advertisement of their brand. Why should a competitor be able to have advertisement when they are not paying anything for it? The Olimpic Committee has decided that they will not request or penalize the athletes for using devices from other competitors. Many athletes have their personal preference of choosing which device they prefer to use. In this case the devices are personal, and contains all of their information with photos, and videos. Why would an athlete want to use a different device other than the one that they already use where they have all of their accounts already set up. For instace, if they want to take a photo, and share it, they will have to go throught the trouble of creating an account on the other devices. Also, they will also have to transfer all of their data to the old device. Thanks, Edwin Ruiz

Hi Edwin, I agree with your line of thought especially given the fact that Samsung is a major sponsor of the Olympics; they in collaboration with the IOC are supposed to establish international quality standards for the athletes to follow. One of the ISO TQM standard principle is customer focus; Samsung spends this huge millions of dollars for such an event and in return expects to increase revenue and market share. In order to achieve these objectives, they have to prevent their major competitors from creating awareness about similar products and close substitutes except they are sponsors recognized by the IOC thus, it makes sense put in place some rules and regulations. What we see here is a miscommunication between leadership (IOC), Sponsors (Samsung) and third parties (athletes). Sponsors are constraint by the Olympic charter which may not address certain situation for instance 'Logos on equipment' owned by

non-sponsors. However, for any rule to be effectively implemented it must not contradict the Olympic charter or previous games rules. Best Regards Joney

In my view its not at all correct for some one to impose rules on personal choices. Mobile phone is a personal choice and every has his own preference. Personally i love Apple's I phone and i would never ever switch that with any other mobile. In this case even though Samsung is paying huge amounts for being the official sponsor of Olympics it cant ask all the athletes to use only Samsung mobiles. IOC can put restrictions on certain things like drugs, drinking and stuff but definitely they cant restrict people from their personal choices.Samsung has offered free Galaxy note 3 mobiles for all the participating athletes so that they can promote their brand. Even though Samsung offers them mobile i bet there will be many who would reject it. All their personal information like photos, contacts has to be swapped and its a hectic task. I personally feel there shouldn't be any restrictions on our personal choices as it would be against the freedom of choice.

Chinese Villagers Attack Polluting Factory,Police

by Moses Famakinwa - Saturday, 22 February 2014, 01:33 PM

I am so disappointed in Chinese government after reading this article. China, which most part of the country is well developed, should know better that there should be a waste and toxic release control process in place while locating factory in a particular zone It is very unfortunate that a developing country like China do not have control/system to manage their toxic release, especially in a zone meant for the villagers. Government should not only be concern about the increasing there manufacturing factory and their

products, but should also be concern about the total quality management of the whole process I believe the Government is just victimizing low income/less vocalized people, believing they can whatever they like and without anyone checking them. The Chinese government should be more concern about finding solution to the pollution problem rather that attacking the protesters Do you think this situation is more of taking advantage of local citizen than just ignorance of the effects?

Hi Moses, I totally agree with your frustration from the article and it's more of negligence on the part of the authorities than just taking advantage of these villagers who are fighting for rights to survive. We can categorically say that the factory does not meet the International standard organization (ISO) definition of Quality control. This factory clearly is NOT a modern total quality management system. These villagers having been dealing with this for over fourteen years and have health concerns which the government has neglected. They are protesting perhaps as way to expose their anger and frustration to the authorities. A modern total quality management factory would be one that involves the villagers, aspect and resources of the factory. Requires a total commitment by the organization and the stakeholders i.e. it's not a quick test and fix approach. Above all, this factory is supposed to have a preventive, sustainable (green) focus. There is a desperate need for a strong, clear and fair TQM leadership that will address the concerns of the these local communities and the society as a whole. Regards Joney

Re: Jellyfish Shut Down Nuke Reactor

by Fernando Rosero - Wednesday, 12 February 2014, 01:46 AM

Hello Thomas,

I also was not aware of this incident. It is a little frightening as the article mentioned that reactor number 3 in the Oskarshamn nuclear plant is the largest boiling water reactor in the world and it is the same type of reactor as Japan's Fukushima Daiichi plant. I agree that there may be some environmental issues that are causing the rising number of jelly fish and that should be investigated. The article did mention that it is difficult to measure as they do not have any historical data so hopefully that changes for the future. After reading that there is no monitoring of the jelly fish and therefore no data in order to figure out a countermeasure for this issue I would say that there is a big problem. This should be a top concern for the plant and they should make sure that their emergency or back up cooling systems are ready to go if needed. There was/is a lot of lessons learned from the disaster in the Fukushima Daiichi plant and I hope that other boiling water reactor nuclear plants have taken the appropriate measures to help ensure that another disaster of that magnitude does not occur again.

Hey Fernando, I support your points and we need to take the predictions of the marine biologists seriously. Since this issue is not common and there is no historical data that can be analyzed to predict future outcome or prevent it's reoccurring; it makes things even more complex. However according to the article, keeping the pipes clean will reduce the chances of it happening again. The power plants needs some important quality control techniques; these

include routine inspections and sampling of the pipes. By inspection the pipes, we observe and measure its input and output (performance). By sampling we can collect data say from the California based Diablo Canyon facility and the Oskarshamn in order to perform inferential reasoning about them. Finally, there is a need to design a system whereby jellyfish in the Baltic Sea can be monitored so historical data can be used by scientists to alleviate this problem in due course.
