CONTEMPORARY LITERATURE COMPONENT - SHORT STORY FOR YEAR 6 SJKC

1. ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Childrens book author Marcia Vaughan has been telling stories ever since she was a young child. She began her career as a librarian in 19 ! because she wanted to tell stories to children" work in childrens theater" and read books# within a few years" she was writing books herself. $%riting childrens books was a natural s&in'off of being a librarian"( Vaughan once told So)ething about the *uthor +S*T*,. $- learned how to write books for children by reading books to )y students. .very ti)e - read a story aloud" - learned a little bit )ore about how a story goes together.( *ccording to Vaughan" the first two stories she wrote +which she worked on for one year, were $never &ublished and for a good reason. They werent very good. /ut - built u& )y writing )uscles on those stories and the third story - wrote" %o)bat Stew" was &ublished and has been selling well for over 011"111 co&ies2( Since the &ublication of %o)bat Stew" Vaughan has written and &ublished several &o&ular books for children. 2. SYNOPSIS ( The Perfect Present ) Sa)" a gifted &ainter" usually knows what to give his dad for his birthday. /ut this year he is finding it hard to co)e u& with the &erfect &resent. This ha&&ens when Sa)s sister" Molly started to tease hi) that he had given dad the sa)e &resent all year. 3e felt sad and he went out for a walk. 3e asked his friends so)e ideas and suggestions on what was the &erfect &resent that he could give to his dad. Sa)s dads birthday ca)e. Sa) couldnt take that he still gave his father a &ortrait of his dad. *fter breakfast" his dad brought Sa) to his office. Sur&risingly" every &ainting that Sa) gave to his dad as birthday &resent was hung on the wall. Sa) felt ha&&y and his dad told hi) that the &ainting was the best birthday &resents his dad could ask for. 3. Chapter 2 Sa) goes around the &ark asking his friends about their gifts to their fathers. 3e thinks that their gifts are better than his. Then his )other encourages hi) to finish his &aintings. Chapter 3 5n his fathers birthday" Sa) is reluctant to give his &resent but ha&&y when he sees the s)ile on his 4ads face. To show his a&&reciation" his 4ad shows hi) all the &aintings that Sa) had given hi). They are all hung in his off Sett%n& This story ha&&ens in the city in *utu)n. Sa) is drawing a &ortrait of his 4ad as birthday. 3is sister" Molly teased hi) for giving 4ad the sa)e &resents every year.
