There is a place where reason-
able men and women take time
each week to discuss and debate is-
sues that face our nation and coun-
tries around the world. No, certain-
ly not Congress. It is the South Jer-
sey Debate League.
The SJDL, established 40 years
ago, hosts as many as 40 high
school varsity and junior varsity
debates on Wednesday afternoons
from December through February
at high schools throughout the re-
gion. This year, students from
Burlington, Camden and Glouces-
ter counties competed each week
with the season concluding at East-
ern High School on Feb. 27 with a
championship debate and awards

Old Man Winter has certainly
had his influence on the Shamong
School District and Lenape Re-
gional High School Districts cal-
endars this year, and if it contin-
ues, spring break plans may be af-
fected.
According to Superintendent
Christine Vespe, Shamong built
in five snow days as part of the
schools calendar and has used all
five so far this year, pushing the
last day of school to June 25. If
weather forces more school clo-
sures, the board will begin to take
days away from the end of spring
break. Spring break is scheduled
to close Shamongs schools for a
total of five and a half days. Fri-
day, April 18 is scheduled for stu-
dent early dismissal and Monday,
April 21 through Friday, April 25
the school will be closed. Vespe is
hopeful that spring break will re-
main intact.
The Lenape Regional High
School District held a special
Board of Education meeting on
Feb. 10 to address school calendar
alterations. The meeting was
called to allow the board to ap-
prove an amended school calen-
dar so a snow day could be made
up on Presidents Day, Feb. 17.
The amended calendar also
listed the dates snow days will be
made up if needed.
The first three are to be made
up on June 16, June 17 and June
18. The district made up its fourth
snow day on Feb. 17 and will
make up its fifth snow day on
June 19.
If a sixth snow day is neces-
sary, it will be made up on June
20. Any additional snow days will
be made up during spring break,
which is the week of April 21. The
school district will take away
from spring break last in hopes of
keeping the full week off intact.
Superintendent Carol Birn-
bohm issued a letter posted on the
districts website following the
Board of Educations approval of
the amended calendar, saying
how this winter has been out of
the ordinary as far as the number
of school days affected by weath-
er.
Although we do weigh the im-
pact of school closings and make-
up days on families, our decisions
are based on what is best for the
safety and education of our stu-
dents, Birnbohm said.
For students who were not able
to attend school on Presidents
Day due to college visitations or
other previous travel plans, ex-
cused absences were accepted as
long as the student brought prop-
er documentation to their respec-
tive school.
In other news:
The Shamong board approved
the following individuals as mem-
bers of the teacher evaluation
district advisory committee:
Vespe, Tim Carroll, Nicole Moore,
Nicole Espenberg, Lisa
Abramovitz, Melissa Ciliberti,
Michael Tuman, Diane Carr,
Laura Hoffman and Jackie John-
son.
Approval was granted to New
Behavioral Network, Inc. as pro-
fessional services providers for
behavioral consultation services
during the 2013-2014 school year.
The boards next meeting is
scheduled for Tuesday, March 25
at 7 p.m. in the Indian Mills Me-
morial School.

The Medford Arts Center is
seeking talented high school mu-
sicians to participate in its annual
Young Artists in Concert event,
scheduled for Friday, April 4, at
7:30 p.m. at the Lord of Life
Lutheran Church in Tabernacle.
The concert is free and open to the
public.
This program is designed to
showcase the areas highest level
of talented high school perform-
ers and will include instrumental-
ists, vocalists and pianists, per-
forming everything from Bach to
Broadway selections.
All high school students resid-
ing in the Lenape Regional High
School District and attending pub-
lic or private school are eligible to
apply. All applicants should be in-
strumentalists, pianists and vo-
calists who have studied privately
or have acquired some onstage
solo experience. Applicants are
asked to submit an application
listing their most recent musical
accomplishments, along with a
recommendation from their in-
structor.
In addition to providing the
young artists with a large and
very appreciative audience, this
concert offers an opportunity for
them to get some extra use from
that solo that was used for region-
al tryouts or perhaps a college au-
dition. It also enables the student
a means of testing out a piece be-
fore a crucial audition, a tech-
nique many experienced musi-
cians have used successfully.
Since performers are not permit-
ted to use recorded accompani-
ments, everyone must provide
their own accompanist. At the
conclusion of the concert, each
performer will receive a certifi-
cate of appreciation for their par-
ticipation.
Applications may be obtained
via email at YAIC2014@aol.com.
Applications are also available at
the Medford Arts Center, 18 N.
Main St., Friday through Sunday,
during the hours of 1 p.m. to 5
p.m.
All applications must be re-
turned or postmarked by March
12. Direct all questions to the
above email or contact Anthony

ceremony.
Taking the stage that afternoon were
two pairs of teams, a pair from both
Seneca and Eastern high schools, which
had the two best records from eight weeks
of competitions throughout the season.
The issue up for debate, the United States
federal government should substantially
increase its economic engagement toward
Cuba, Mexico or Venezuela.
In the schools recital hall, two students
from Eastern would argue in defense of
the engagement statement, making them
the "affirmative" team. Challenging their
arguments and data would be Shawn
Tuman and Nate Foulk from Seneca, the
"negative team.
Simultaneously, in the chorus room, the
two schools would take reverse positions
with Elizabeth Raffo and Russell Bauer
representing the Golden Eagles. Senecas
coach Dave Knecht said the work the kids
do begins when school does.
The kids start a plan pretty much right
after summer break ends, when school gets
going in September, Knecht said. They
begin researching, working and practic-
ing. Its really impressive how much work
they put in each week.
Acting as judges for the debates are all
the coaches from the schools that partici-
pate. Coaches then give feedback and dis-
cuss where students can improve. Teams
vary in size but pick four students to repre-
sent the school as the varsity debate team.
We have 20 kids that make up junior
varsity and varsity, Knecht said. Every-
one helps with the research, with practice
debates.
The value doesnt end with students
learning how to have a civil conversation.
The SJDL also set a goal to raise more than
$1,000 for the American Red Cross and its
efforts for Typhoon Haiyan relief in the
Philippines.
Since the need for relief was immediate
and urgent, the coaches donated $1,000 and
the students were challenged to meet and
beat that amount through the sale of the
league shirt, said SJDL president John To-
bias of Bordentown Regional High School.
Im happy to say weve met that goal.
An afternoon of lively debate came to an
end in the schools cafeteria with all the
leagues teams enjoying a dinner of pizza,
soda and conversation. Eastern was named
the winner of the championship debate
over the Golden Eagles, but Tuman was
recognized as the leagues best overall
speaker. Knecht said he is hopeful word of
the league will continue to spread through-
out the student body and to other schools
in the area.
We have 12 teams in the league right
now and the goal is definitely to keep grow-
ing, to keep adding teams, Knecht said.
F
or the past few years, Gov.
Christie has been bold and
straightforward with his push
for reform, tax cuts and hope during
his annual state budget address.
Last week, he was anything but.
Instead of painting a rosy picture of
a bright future for New Jersey,
Christie stuck to reality and seemed
to cast a potential dark cloud. If we
dont do something about pensions
soon, well all be paying for it dearly
later, is what he said.
Christies proposed $34.4 billion
budget includes a full payment of $2.25
billion for state workers pensions. But
he said that changes he made to the
pension plan a few years ago arent
doing enough, and said that too much
of New Jerseys spending goes toward
what he called entitlements, a
phrase his opponents, and union lead-
ers, obviously took exception to.
With our long-term obligations
only set to increase in the coming
years, the problem will not go away by
itself, he said. We cannot wish it
away. We cannot make it go away by
magic. What we must do is what we
were sent here to do by the people to
lead and to act decisively again.
Democrats responded by saying that
the pension reforms are working just
fine, and time will prove that every-
thing is A-OK.
Were not so sure that the system
will simply fix itself, but we also dont
necessarily agree with Christie that
more major changes are needed right
now.
What we do agree with is that more
spending cuts need to be made some-
where. The state needs to get out of
debt or at least move closer back to
even and it needs to do so soon.
Local county governments, municipal-
ities and school districts need to share
more services to cut spending without
cutting quality of services and the
state needs to provide these entities
with the ability to do so.
So what to do? Who really knows?
While making more major changes
might be the answer, sitting back and
doing nothing isnt either.

On Saturday, Feb. 22, Shamong
Cub Scouts Pack 47 held its annu-
al Pinewood Derby. The cafete-
ria of the Indian Mills Elemen-
tary School was full of excite-
ment as fun was had by all. The
Scouts raced their cars after
weeks of hard work and fine-tun-
ing. The Scout-made cars looked
like tanks, guitars, skateboards,
forks and other unique designs.
Medals were handed out in the
following categories: Best Paint
Job, Jude Lugiano; Craftsman-
ship, Aidan Koederitz; Looks
Least Like a Car, Keegan Sokorai;
Most Creative, Will Feldschar.
Trophies were handed out for
speed to the following: First place,
Chase Donovan; Second place,
Logan Barrett; Third place,
Michael Mckeown.
This is an example of the many
fun things the Cub Scouts do.
Don't miss out on the opportunity
to learn while having fun with the
Scouts. Sign your son up and vol-
unteer. If interested in joining the
Cub Scouts, contact Brian Barrett
at bcbn1@verizon.net
