Parish Celebrates Msgr. Genes Birthday

a Isabelita Hall was simply decorated that evening of February 25, 2014. It was full of lay leaders and religious men and women not just sharing stories of their lifes journeys but were there for one special occasion - to celebrate the 70th birthday of Msgr. Higinio C. Velarde, Jr., our beloved parish priest. As the guests entered the Hall, Msgr. Gene was at the entrance greeting with a smile and acknowledging the presence of everyone. Some brought him gifts while others simply gave him a birthday greeting. To start the celebration, a prayer of thanksgiving, blessing and protection for Msgr. Gene was led by Fr. Nathaniel G. Gentizon. A welcome address was rendered by Fr. Ronald C. De Leon and it was followed by the blessing of the food by Archbishop Angel N. Lagdameo, D.D. Then the sumptuous dinner followed which was enjoyed by everyone. Two previous parish priests namely: Msgr. Jose M. Gamboa and Msgr. Amadeo Escaan, priests from Saint Joseph Regional Seminary and Saint Vincent Ferrer Seminary and from other parishes were present, making the occasion more memorable for the celebrant and for everyone. Parish personnel and staff and lay leaders from the barangays and different religious organizations also joined the celebration to be one with Msgr. Gene

in joyful thanksgiving to the Lord for the gift of life. Everyone present witnessed the happiness Msgr. Gene has felt during his birthday. He went to groups for a picture taking and shared with them short talks and laughs. He was going around the hall to see if everyone is enjoying. Towards the end of the dinner, he gave his message to all thanking them for their presence and prayers.

Ugaling kon amo ini ang himuon, mahimo nga mangin kaladlawan ini nga ugali sang pagpuasa. Ang importante sa pagpuasa amo ang espiritu sang sakripisyo nga bunga sang pagpaumod sa pagkaon. Sin-o ang may katungdanan sa Pagpuasa? Ang mga nakalambot na sa 18 ka tuig ang panuigon tubtob sa pagsugod sang iya ika-60 ka tuig, ukon ang nakakompleto na sang iya 59 ka tuig amo ang may katungdanan sa pagpuasa. Ang Pagpaumod sa pagkaon sang karne lain man sang sa Pagpuasa. Ini ginatawag nga Abstinensya. Ang mga nagaedad sing 14 ka tuig paibabaw amo ang may katungdanan sa pag-abstinensya. Duha lang ka adlaw sa bilog nga tuig nga ginamando ang Pagpuasa kag Pagabstinensya ang Mierkoles sang Badlis kag ang Biernes Santo. Sa iban nga Biernes sa sulod sang Kwaresma ginapatuman ang pag-abstinensya, pero ginatugot man nga kambiohan ini sang iban nga buhat sang pagpenitensya. Ang dapat gid dumdumon amo nga sa Panahon sang Kwaresma, ang espiritu nga dapat mangibabaw amo ang espiritu sang Pagpenitensya, kag amo ini ang ginahalinan sang pagpatuman sang Pagpuasa kag Pag-abstinensya. Bilang Amay sa kalag sa sini nga parokya, liwat ginaagda ko kamo sa pagsulod sa sini nga balaan nga panahon nga may nagakaigo nga intensyon kag espiritu.

he Jaro Parish Youth Ministry (JPYM) Council started reestablishing the Campus Youth Ministry at Jaro National High School last February 7, 2014. In order to gather the young people and invite them to join the ministry, we have a JAM (Jesus and Me) Session (JAM) every Fridays on this month of February except last February 14 as we had a Taize Prayer. The JPYM (Yeshua) Band rendered songs that other students enjoyed as they joined in singing. During our first session, we reflected on the theme Love and Friendship. One of the songs that we have reflected upon was Just the Way You Are of Bruno Mars. We have relared this to what was written 2 Timothy 2:22, I praise you for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works, my soul knows it very well.

On our second JAM Session, we have reflected with the theme, Hope and Faith. We allow the students to participate in our energizer song, The More We Get Together; in our game, Minute to Win It, which they enjoyed the most; and we let them write their original pick-up lines. As the fun went on, the Yeshua Band sang songs. One of the songs played was Lord Patawad of Basilio with which we reflected upon Mt 6:14-15, For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your Heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins. For our last JAM Session, we have reflected upon the theme of Discipleship. We invite the students to follow the Lord by joining the Youth Ministry in their campus and in their own barangay. Now, we are looking forward for a fruitful and successful Campus Youth Ministry. We are praying that our Lord will touch the hearts of the students so that they themselves will become youth ministers of our Church.

Fr. Joenick S. Territorio Q4. Who are Christs faithful? Christs faithful are those who, since they are incorporated into Christ through Baptism, are constituted the People of God. For this reason, they participate in their own way in the priestly, prophetic, and kingly office of Christ. They are called, each according to his or her particular condition, to exercise the mission which God has entrusted to the Church to fulfil in the world. 1 Q5. Who are the members of Christs faithful? Christ is the Head and Shepherd of His Body, the Church. Moreover, by divine institution, among Christs faithful there are in the Church sacred ministers, who are also called clerics; the others are called lay people. Drawn from both groups are those of Christs faithful who, professing the evangelical counsels through vows or other sacred bonds recognized and approved by the Church, are consecrated to God in their own special way and promote the salvific mission of the Church. Their state, although it does not belong to the hierarchical structure of the Church, thus pertain to its life and holiness.2 In short, Christs faithful is composed of the laity (i.e., baptized but not ordained), clerics (baptized but ordained), and consecrated life (baptized and specially consecrated). Q6. What is the specific role of the lay faithful? Since lay people are deputed to the apostolate by Baptism and Confirmation, they have, according to the condition of each, the special obligation to permeate and perfect the temporal order of things with the spirit of the Gospel. In this way, particularly in conducting secular business and exercising secular functions, they are to give witness to Christ.3 The laity, by their very vocation, seek the kingdom of God by ordering them according to the plan of God. They live in the world... in the ordinary circumstances of family and social life... to work for the sanctification of the world from within as a leaven. In this way, they may make known Christ to others, especially by the testimony of a life resplendent in faith, hope and charity. Therefore, since they are tightly bound in all types of temporal affairs, it is their special task to order and to throw light upon these affairs in such a way that they may come into being and then continually increase according to Christ to the praise of the Creator and the Redeemer.4

On the Year of the Laity

s baptized Christians, we share in the priestly, prophetic and kingly functions of Christ. As priests, we are called to offer prayers and sacrifices for our own sanctification. As prophets, we are called to teach Christian doctrines to other people and to call for conversion of sinners as we include ourselves. As sharers of the kingly office of Christ, we are called to serve like Jesus who came not to be served but to serve. How faithful are we in exercising our priestly, prophetic and kingly duties and responsibilities? How aware are we of the pastoral challenges we face in our Church particularly in our own parish? How are we responding to these challenges? During the first communion of the Grade 3 pupils coming from the different elementary schools here in Jaro, we have discovered that majority of the parents are not yet married in the Church. Moreover, when I celebrate Mass here in the cathedral during funerals and weddings, in

the barangay during monthly Masses or Mass at the wake, I have observed that many of those attending the Eucharistic celebration do not receive Holy Communion. I understand that they may not have gone to confession; hence, they could not receive Jesus sacramentally. These realities compel us to do something for the sanctification of ourselves especially those who need spiritual help. We could not remain deaf and mute to these situations in which, through the eyes of faith, can be gracious opportunities for us to practice and live our being priest, prophet and king. We believe that it is not just enough for us attend mass and pray our devotions or to help those who are poor and needy but forgetting to respond to what is equally important in our Christian life i.e. sanctification of ourselves by receiving the graces of the sacraments particularly the Sacrament of Confession and Matrimony. What do we do when we know that some of us are already living as couples but have not yet received the Sacrament of Matrimony? Do we take some time to teach ourselves and be humble and courageous to seek for help so that we can be assisted and eventually receive what we essentially

need? What do we do to our old and sick brother or sister in our neighborhood? Do we take time to visit them? Are we sensitive and responsive to their needs? What if we err or we find others committing grievous sins, do we correct ourselves or admonish one another in the spirit of fraternal love and care? Let us always remember that we are called to be saints, prophets and kings. Are you ready to embrace this challenge? On our own, it would be difficult but if we have God and one another, all things are possible!

We have four (4) active household prayer communities comprising: Jesus, Our Protector Prayer Community, The Lord is my Shepherd, Jesus the Healer and Voice of the Lord. There are 20 active youth members who serve as choir - a task of the Music Ministry - and 30 active members who meet every Thursday at 7 oclock in the evening for a prayer meeting. God is with us to stay longer as the years go by. So, we shout with joy, To God be the Glory!

ur Lady of Candles Prayer Community celebrated its 32nd Foundation Anniversary last February 23, 2014. The theme was, One in the Bond of Love. This Charismatic group reached these long years of Praising Jesus Christ, the Son of God so, we joined hands to let the world know that elders and youth are one in the service of the Lord with Love. The Eucharistic celebration was assisted by OLCPC at noon time with Fr. Ronald C. de Leon as presider who gave a spiritfilled homily telling us to love unconditionally like Jesus did. There will be a pre-registration for the Confirmation of the graduating pupils of Jaro I and II Elementary Schools and Judith Lazarraga Tiongco Memorial School on March 4-8 and 11-14, 2014 at the Parish Convent Hall. May pagtililipon ang mga katapo sang Apostolate of OFW Families sa aton parokya sa Marso 9, 2014 sa kaangtanan sang pagsaulog sang Migrant Sunday. here was a time when the dark clouds of crimes, vices, power abuse, and selfish ambitions, hovered over the City and Province of Iloilo and people were afraid of what the next minute would bring. Fear and doubt reigned supreme. After a long period of brain struggle, a solution came into view. It needed intelligence, understanding, faith and courage, but it opened the gates to transformation and reform. Religious organizations dedicated their time and comfort to social, physical, moral and spiritual change and practice. Every Sunday, the Cathedral were filled with adult and young workers in the vineyard of the Lord. Followers of the Lord from all walks of life, assembled to plan, discuss and put into action what is best for the improvement of our life. Some of us were not only followers or disciples many have become apostles of God. When I went to the city one day, riding in a taxicab, the driver tuned on the radio and I was surprised but glad with the announcement. The speaker, whose name I did not know, was explaining the beauty of the Holy Rosary. He explained the different mysteries and what the prayer could do to transform and reform us. Isnt this a big improvement in our Christianity? When I was in the city, a lady friend

told me that the employers a Lending Agency, the OCS, has just finished hearing Mass in their receiving room. She said that the lady manager is a devotee of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Child Jesus, and that there are images of both of them in the receiving room. Some of their clients and friends were with them. Another score in spiritual improvement. When I gave copies of Candle Light to a group led by Edwin Daulo, I was told that they are now propagating the devotion to Jesus of Divine Mercy in different barangays. What a beautiful apostolate. Now, the Blood and Water from the Heart of Jesus will wash away the dirt of sin. Here in Barangay Balabag, Pavia, the Kagawads held a conference on how to make the community a nice place to live in, with brotherhood and cooperation as the theme. What an inspiring agenda. There is an old, broken chapel near Providence which they plan to rebuild so that Masses, catechesis and religious conferences could be held there. They invited some residents to the meeting, some of my daughters were there. If plans go through, I shall conduct Values Formation Seminars in order to emphasize Christian Values. Mayor Mike Gorriceta has already approved of my plan. He asked for the format and I shall give it to him as soon as possible. Educational institutions are also joining in the struggle for moral improvement. The University of San Agustin will have an election of student leaders in the Elementary Grades one of these days. They were told to make a slogan to identify their party.

One master commands us to accumulate riches that are on earth; the other One commands us to seek for things essential, permanent and eternal. I once read the life of Aristotle Onassis, the famous billionaire who married Jacky Kennedy. Once in a while Aristotle would go back to his hometown, a little town in Greece. He did this secretly, because he was visiting his mother who remained in their hometown, humbly living a poor and simple life. She was

You cannot serve two masters at the same time with the same degree. One master commands us to walk by faith and the other to acquire and enjoy that which is material. For me, I choose to live poor and humble so that when the Lord calls me, I have nothing to worry. For as the song goes, I, I who have nothing. I, I who have no one, adore You, and want You so.
