Education and Training being held here in Accra

the continent, using real-life good practices and
examples.

training. It will provide yet another unparalleled opportunity for local and inter-
national professionals and stakeholders to benchmark, learn, share and network
thus strengthening the continent’s many and varied innovative educational tech-
nology projects.

While here, do take time to enjoy the world renowned Ghanaian hospitality as you
meet our people, sample our food, listen to our music and visit some of the many
interesting cultural and heritage sites. Many of these are listed in this, the
monthly Enjoy Accra publication.

proper transport policy. In Lagos, and at the bus

ed there are 1000 or so molues, it is not uncommon
for the bus conductors(mate), hanging out from the
doors, to use one hand to lift a running passenger
onto a moving molue. They always take on board
more than the recommended 44 passengers.
Many are squashed inside and those without seats
are packed into the aisle or hang from the doorway
that pictures a troski moving from Circle to
Kaneshie. Danfos are to take 12 passengers, but yet
again you can’t really tell if there are a 100 in.
Death traps, that is the commonest word description
from the users and yet they board them because
they are cheaper. I bet you have heard of the expres-
sion “trigger happy” if anything the drivers of these
buses are “pedal happy”.
A proper description of these trotros (can I call them
this?) The bodywork is battered; tyres are as bald as
the skull of a 90-year old man, plumes of thick,
black smoke are emitted from silencers as the
buses chug on with barely functioning brakes. You
wonder how most of the buses secured roadworthy
certificates in the first place.
One of the fast growing activities on these buses,
both Ghana and Nigeria is the selling or preaching
events. On a typical day, one could buy anything on a
bus.
"Praise God... praise god! One passenger yells a
bible in one hand and Christian pamphlets in the
other.
His fellow danfo commuters give a "Hallelujah"
reply. A ride in a molue will also enable you to expe-
rience the sales gimmicks of vendors and wit of
comedians. Household products are also sold and
before the bus reaches its destination, a few passen-
gers exchange their money for goods.
Lagos commuters have, however, come to accept
their buses with a love-hate relationship.
"They may have their potential dangers but my day
won't be complete if I don't travel in one," says one
faithful molue pal.
"Through them, I'm able to catch up with the latest
gossips in town."
Despite the dangers and discomfort, the buses have
one compensation - their entertainment value.
One thing is sure the Molues in Nigeria are compa-
rable in sales essence to any long distance bus you
board at the Neoplan station in Accra, it is one
preacher or seller after another till you arrive at
your destination. Whether you are a Troski, Molue or
Danfo pal one thing is assured in the current era of
constant fuel hikes, your pockets have a manage-
able insurance level.

Cross-cultural Relationships

In a city as culturally diverse as Accra, where con-
versations from Chinese to Twi and Spanish to Swiss
weave through the aisles of grocery stores and pep-
pers the dishes in restaurants, it is normal to inter-
act daily with those whose backgrounds differ from
our own. We forge professional, commercial, and
social connections with people from places we may
not be able to locate on a map. And as we learn
from them about foreign food, traditions, and ways-
of-life, we frequently begin to cultivate friendships
and closer connections—and that’s where this arti-
cle begins!
Although cross-cultural roman-
tic relationships are certainly
nothing new, we decided to
focus locally and speak to non-
Ghanaians in relationships with
Ghanaians.
The first gentleman I spoke with
declined to have his name or
picture included in the story due
to privacy concerns, but agreed
to share with me views on his
relationship with his Ghanaian
partner.
He is Lebanese-born, but
European-educated and has
lived here in Accra for nearly fif-
teen years. He has been with his
Ghanaian partner for over a
decade, and finds that she is
more flexible and nicer than his
previous non-Ghanaian girl-
friends. He admits that cultural
dissimilarities and different
mentalities have kept them from marrying, but has
not ruled out the possibility of wedding her in the
future.

his happiness was all
that mattered”
When I inquired how his family reacted to his cross-
cultural relationship, he informed me that they were
quite supportive and happy because he was happy.
As for his Ghanaian partner’s family, he finds that

they are far less intrusive than his ex-wife’s
European family, and has met his Ghanaian part-
ner’s mother only four or five times over the course
of their ten-year plus relationship. In the past, his
ex-wife’s family frequently arrived at his home
unannounced, until he insisted that they move away
to avoid such situations. But his Ghanaian girl-
friend’s mother does not visit, even when expressly
asked over for banku or fu-fu, because she is shy
and does not wish to intrude.
As for their future, another cultural test may await
them. He has taken his Ghanaian partner to Paris
four or five times over the years
and she has enjoyed herself
there. Despite the chilly February
weather on her first visit, she
was impressed by the high-
speed trains, the beautiful archi-
tecture, and the history. She is
actually encouraging him to look
into positions in Europe, with the
hopes of moving there for sever-
al years to experience what he
has—immersing herself in a cul-
ture foreign to her upbringing.
But ultimately they will return to
Ghana, where they met, fell in
love, and enjoy a culture that
seems to take little issue with
their mixed relationship.
To get a different perspective on
the same issue, I spoke with a
younger couple, both in terms of
age and length of time together.
Jean-Marc Beltran is a 35 year-
old Frenchman from the Lyon
area who moved to Accra about
three months ago for his career.
He met his 23 year-old girlfriend Jacque Ciara
Moore when he saw her leaving church with two of
her friends and offered them a ride. Jacque is orig-
inally from the Eastern Region and is in Accra study-
ing for a degree in social work. The two have been
dating for nearly two months.
I asked Jean-Marc how his family and friends react-
ed when they became aware that he was dating a
Ghanaian. His family told him that his happiness
was all that mattered, but his friends who live in
West Africa warned him that his Ghanaian girlfriend
was only interested in trapping him in marriage.

It was all glamour and bling-blings, when all the stars and who is who of Accra descended
on the Aphrodisiac Night club.

The occasion was the after party of the Ghana Music Awards. Yours truly was present as
usual to bring to you, if you like, the views that could not be expressed by many.
The sentiments that many bore yet could not convey.

Relax and savour every single one of these pictures and tell me, if you do not agree these
expressions were what our stars wanted to convey in all humour.

Ja Rule has come and gone and for almost one whole weekend (except for that rain that
nearly ruined the beach party) he was the most talked about and hugged (Doreen and
Asabee).

My family has been quite understanding for the

It was one of those weekends again and Accra
was too stuffy and gradually getting too crowd-
ed for all of us.

I set off like an ancient discoverer enroute to
Kumasi to discover a new place I could share
with you. If you want to enjoy Accra and Ghana

In Kumasi I did not fail to stop by the Lake and
the Museum as well as the Bantama High
street at night. But what I truly want to discuss
with you is my latest discovery in mechanics.
Just when I was set to return to Accra, my car
developed a fault. I was told by the first
mechanic that I would have to wait for the
parts from Europe and that meant leaving my
car over at his shop until when the part finally
arrived, I did not look at him twice.
The next fellow told me it would cost me GHC
800 to repair my car (these guys are supposed-
ly the sole importers of this make of cars). I
stood there, as confused as a bat in broad day-
light. Just then a young man came over to me
and said `Boss fa wo car no ko Maazin` mean-
ing send your car to Maazin.
I was like what?! And just then it all dawned on

How it all began,

My wife Evelyn and I met about 12 years ago, whilst
in School at Achimota where I gained admission to
pursue a Science course.
This was at a time when I had sworn to myself not
to go out again after having fallen out of several
relationships.
The course was so tough; I opted to dedicate myself
to it totally and swore not to engage myself again in
any relationship. With this resolve, I set out on my
mission to conquer Science and make it to the
Medical School.
Then I saw her, the queen of my heart, she was
beautiful and the kind of girl I have always dreamt
about. But I stayed put and never spoke to her,
though I fancied her from afar. Months and months
went by until my study mate and classmate Ellen
Opoku started talking about a new friend she had
made and kept saying so many good things about
her. Eventually she decided we should meet up with
her sometime and I had the shock of my life when
it turned out to be this very same girl I have
admired and appreciated from a distance.
That day turned out to be the day the ice broke
and I spoke to her for the very first time. We
became friends and eventually best friends
and one thing led to another naturally until the
moment we said I do.
Now I have the most beautiful girl in the uni-
verse, my best friend, as my wife.

Moussaka
INGREDIENTS METHOD
2 lbs eggplant wine, salt and freshly 1. Cut eggplants into 1/4" thick slices. Layer the

kled on each layer. Let stand 30 minutes, and

1 lb ground lamb 1/2 cup flour
2. Heat some of the oil in a large frying pan and

fry eggplant in batches until golden on both
1/4 tsp allspice 1/4 tsp nutmeg sides, adding more oil as needed.
2 tbsp tomato paste 1/3 cup grated
3 tbsp fresh parsley, Parmesan 3. Plunge tomatoes in boiling water for 30 sec
onds, then refresh in cold water. Peel and
chopped 3 tbsp toasted bread-
chop roughly.
1/2 cup dry white crumbs
4. Heat some oil and brown lamb in large skil
let, break up large pieces (drain excess fat)
and add onions, cook a few more minutes.

5. Add tomatoes, cinnamon, allspice, tomato

paste, parsley, wine, and pepper to the meat
and onions. Bring to a boil and simmer, cov
ered for 15 minutes.

6. Spoon alternating layers into a greased

9"x13" baking dish. Start with a layer of egg
plant, then half the meat mixture. Then
another layer of eggplant, and the second
half of the meat mixture. Finish with a layer
of eggplant.

7. Make the sauce. Melt butter in a large

saucepan. Stir in flour and cook for 30 sec
onds. Remove from heat and slowly stir in
milk. Return to heat and whisk until sauce
thickens. Stir in nutmeg and Parmesan.

8. Spread sauce over last layer of eggplant and

sprinkle with breadcrumbs. Bake for 45 min
utes at 350F. Let sit 5-10 minutes before slicing.

3 Cleansing
Before using make up, face should be very
well clean. Dust, grease, perspiration, dirt and
bacteria are not detached from ordinary
washing. For this, cleansing creams are
required. They go deeper into the pores and
eliminate them thoroughly and clean the face.
Before applying cleansing cream make sure
hairs do not stick to the face. Apply cream in
small amount on cheeks, chin, neck and fore-
head. Massage it softly by moving palms little
upward and downward, by paying appropriate
attention to the creases of the nose, under the
chin area, neck and ear lobes. Rub these
small areas using fingers. Use the moist cot-
ton and remove the cream. Use of dry cotton
must be avoided as it absorbs moisture from
the skin.
4 Foot Care
For cracked heels, melt paraffin wax; mix it
with mustard oil and apply on the affected
area. Leave it overnight. After 10 or 15 days,
the heels will become smooth. Massage body
with a mixture of coconut oil and any of
favorite scented oils like lavender or rose-
mary. For cracked heals, rub the foot
with coconut oil and keep the foot
in temperate water for some
time. Clean the water
off the feet and apply

flower, Henna and juice
of half a lemon. When dry

FITNESS BASICS
(Warm-up and Cool-down System)
How often, how long and how hard you exer-
cise, and what kinds of exercises you do
should be determined by what you are trying
to accomplish. Your goals, your present fit-
ness level, age, health, skills, interest and
convenience are among the factors you should
consider.
Your exercise program should include some-
thing from each of the four basic fitness com-
ponents described previously. Each workout
should begin with a warm-up and end with a
cool-down. As a general rule, space your
workouts throughout the week and avoid con-
secutive days of hard exercise.
Here are the amounts of activity necessary for
the average, healthy person to maintain a
minimum level of overall fitness. Included are
some of the popular exercises for each cate-
gory.
WARM-UP - 5-10 minutes of exercises such
as walking, slow jogging, knee lifts, arm cir-
cles or trunk rotations. Low intensity move-
ments that stimulate movements to be used
in the activity can also be included in the
warm-up.
MUSCULAR ENDURANCE - at least
three 30-minute sessions each week that
include exercises such as pushups, sit-ups,
pull-ups, dips and weight training for all the
major muscle groups.
CARDIORESPIRATORY ENDURANCE -
at least three 20-minute bouts of continuous
aerobic (activity requiring oxygen) rhythmic
exercise each week. Popular aerobic condi-
tioning activities include brisk walking, jog-
ging, swimming, cycling, rope-jumping, row-
ing and some continuous action games like
tennis and handball.
COOL DOWN - a minimum of 5-10 minutes
of slow walking, low-level exercise, combined
with stretching.

Iposu E. Oluwakayode (call him Kayode) is our
special personality for this month; let the
dance begin with his impressive C.V. Indeed,
he is an interpreter, show organizer, editor,
filmmaker, movie director and producer,
screen player and advertisement concept pro-
ducer!
We met him on a video shoot. His team was
working on a new TV series called “Drift”, a
mysterious story set in the political African
system.
Kayode hails from Nigeria and after his stud-
ies, he decided to focus on “media history”. He
realized that organization concepts were quite
easy for him and felt really com-
fortable planning, organizing
and following projects. With a
really productive imagination,
he thought about a story in
which the Central Bank of
Nigeria would be robbed and
thus, his first script was born.
After organising an exhibition
gallery show for TV2 in Togo, he
came to Ghana in 2002, where
he is still living.
Writing easily, he worked for
Facts Magazine as assistant
editor and became the editor in
chief quickly. He is in charge of
the distribution for Ovation, and
works as well for Prime People Newspaper.
You are probably thinking, “can’t this bird
land?” He is just a very independent person
whose life needs to be lived on a big screen…
He realized that the African cinema industry
was growing mainly in English spoken African
countries but not especially in West Africa. This
part of the black continent was yet, virgin in
this sector, so he decided to make a dynamic
move again, creating Movie Plus magazine.
Every quarter, this magazine presents analy-
ses and invites the beautiful and creative peo-
ple from movies. Movie Plus is bilingual and
available in 4 countries, Nigeria, Togo, Benin
profile
and Ghana (for 3 Ghana
Cedis). The second edi-
tion is expected in April.
Still not enough for
Kayode… The
Iposu E. Oluwakayode
Wafisummit (West
Africa Film Industry) is here to complete his
already impressive career so far. The first edi-
tion took place in Ghana in 2006. The aim of
this event is to sensitize African people to the
movie industry, to try to find out a better way to
distribute and promote films, documentaries…
Many African actors live abroad,
especially in United States
because they cannot find any
work in their own country and
also because of the non-trans-
parent and complicated system.
The Wafisummit tries to create a
central distribution network for
western Africa … be together to
be stronger. This idea is not a
dream, and promises a better
future for African cinematogra-
phy.
All the guests coming to the
Wafisummit are Africans. They
are definitely the best consult-
ants in this domain.
In 2008, the Wafisummit, which is organized
every 2 years, will take place in Nigeria and will
be dedicated to training. Workshops are being
planned and the summit will start with the
Abuja Films Festival in August.
You would think that with such an impressive
background Kayode should be 60 years old….
Think again, he’s only 28! And you know what
he told me after this interview? “I plan to go
back to school…”!

Understanding Impotence
From Causes to Correction
A few years ago, if the subject of impotence
was brought up in a room full of people, one
would hear mumours, snickers and even a few
gasps... “I can’t believe he/she just said that!”
But as impotence becomes an ever growing
reality for men, the subject is no longer taboo.
It is estimated that over 3 million Ghanaian
men suffer from impotence and many do so in
silence, much to the frustration and disap-
pointment of themselves and their partners.
But there is no need for these men to hang in
sexual limbo for long, for a great majority of
men, the problem is solvable.
Impotence or chronic erectile dysfunction (ED)
is associated with the persistent inability of a
man to achieve or maintain an erection suffi-
cient for satisfactory sexual intercourse.
Erections can result from a number of reasons
including brain stimuli, hormonal actions and
blood vessel and nerve function. Psychological
conditions such as stress, anxiety, depression,
or a waning attraction to one’s partner often
leads to erectile dysfunction and in the past, it
was assumed that impotence was primarily a
psychological problem. However, many thera-
pists and physicians today believe that as many
as 90 percent of all cases of impotence have
some physical basis.
The Association for Male Sexual Dysfunction
recognizes over two hundred drugs that list
impotence as a side effect. Some of the most
common drugs are alcohol, cigarettes (nico-
tine) and blood pressure medication.
Atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries,
can also pose a risk to the heart and to the
penis by clogging the arteries and blocking the
flow of blood. These plaques are generally
caused by eating fatty foods, animal foods,
sugar, fried and fast foods and junk foods.
These plaques often block the arteries leading
to the genitals, interfering with the ability to
maintain an erection.

Close political rivals - now there's a connection in
their family histories
It has emerged that Barack Obama is a tenth
cousin, once removed, of the man whose job he
wants - George W Bush.
They are linked by Samuel Hinkley of Cape Cod,
who died in 1662.
Mr. Obama is also a distant cousin of the actor
Brad Pitt while Hillary Clinton is related to Mr.
Pitt's girlfriend, Angelina Jolie.
The ties of the US Democratic rivals were estab-
lished by a respected US genealogical organisation
after three years' investigation.
Mrs. Clinton and Mr. Obama can also boast a long
list of other famous relations.
Christopher Child, from the New England Historic
Genealogical Society, says that the politicians'
ancestries show they have more in common than
they think.
The Society, founded in 1845, is the oldest and
biggest non-profit genealogical organisation in the
United States.
The research, conducted by Mr. Child and Gary
Boyd Roberts, came up with some extraordinary
family connections.
