Compact Manoeuvring Simulator

Introduction
The MARIN Compact Manoeuvring Simulator is capable of simulating a variety of maritime operations covering virtually any type of vessel and various propulsion systems (conventional, PODS, ASD, VSP). The Compact Manoeuvring Simulator is designed to serve the modern needs for high performance bridge simulators that can now be located at your own offices.

MARIN
MARIN is an independent and innovative service provider for the maritime industry, since 1932. The services incorporate a unique combination of simulation, model testing, full-scale measurements and training programmes. The Compact Manoeuvring Simulator is a tailormade and compact version of the simulators in use at MARIN with identical software. The full mission simulators at MARINs Nautical Centre MSCN are being used for Pilot and Tug Master training and for port design studies.

System description
The Compact Manoeuvring Simulator consists of a Trainee Station (Figure 1), and an Instructor Operator Station. Optionally a separate Pilot/Captain Station can be added. The Trainee Station can be equipped with: 180 degree projection system using 3 high quality Image Generators. One rear-view display. Main console with: ship controls (telegraph, wheel, bowthruster or controls for PODs, ASD, VSP), ECDIS, ARPA, winch controls. Overhead panel with: RPM indicators, thruster angle indicators, rudder indicator.

Objectives
Objectives that can be achieved with the Compact Manoeuvring Simulator are training of: General ship handling principles. Specific manoeuvres for dedicated areas under normal environmental conditions. Specific manoeuvres for dedicated areas under marginal environmental conditions, i.e. near the edge of the operational envelope. Emergency situations such as malfunctions of engines and rudder, line breaking, bad visibility, etc.

Benefits

The Pilot/Captain Station enables the control of an additional ownship, for instance to manoeuvre LNG-tankers, shuttle tankers and to facilitate FPSO operations. It consists of: A Softbridge application for control of telegraph, wheel and bowthruster. Stealth Image Generator (Figure 3).

This device is best described as a separate visual channel with complete flexibility to take up any arbitrary observation point within the database during runtime. Thus, 3D monitoring of the simulation in progress is very effectively achieved.

Flexible. Cost-effective. COTS components, utilizing normal PCs. In-house training (requiring normal office space). Customised consoles, dedicated Controls. Instructor and Preparation System. Dedicated Ship Models. Dedicated Geographical Databases. Standard library of Traffic Models. High Quality Visualisation. Remote dial-in for support and maintenance services. Easy to add ship models and geographical databases at any time. Easy and virtually unlimited creation of new exercises.
