National Filariasis Elimination Program

Filariasis is a major parasitic infection, which continues to be a public health problem in the Philippines. It was first discovered in the Philippines in 1907 by forei n wor!ers. "onsolidated field reports showed a prevalence rate of 9.7# per 1000 population in 199$. It is the second leadin cause of permanent and lon %term disability. &he disease affects mostly the poorest municipalities in the country about 71# of the case live in the 'th%(th class type of municipalities. &he )orld *ealth +ssembly in 1997 declared ,Filariasis -limination as a priority. and followed by )*/0s call for lobal elimination. + si n of the 1/*0s commitment to eliminate the disease, the pro ram0s official shift from control to elimination strate ies was evident in an +dministrative /rder 234%+,s 199$ disseminated to endemic re ions. + major strate y of the -limination Plan was the 5ass +nnual &reatment usin the combination dru , 1iethylcarbama6ine "itrate and +lbenda6ole for a minimum of 3 years 7 above livin in established endemic areas after the issuance from )*/ of the safety data on the use of the dru s. &he Philippine Plan was approved by )*/ which ave the overnment free supply of the +lbenda6ole 8donated b y 9:; thru )*/< for filariasis elimination. National Rabies Prevention and Control Program


Aabies is a human infection that occurs after a transdermal bite or scratch by an infected animal, li!e do s and cats. It can be transmitted when infectious material, usually saliva, comes into direct contact with a victim0s fresh s!in lesions. Aabies may also occur, thou h in very rare cases, throu h inhalation of virus%containin spray or throu h or an transplants.

Aabies is considered to be a ne lected disease, which is 100# fatal thou h 100# preventable. It is not amon the leadin causes of mortality and morbidity in the country but it is re arded as a si nificant public health problem because 81< it is one of the most acutely fatal infections and 83< it is responsible for the death of 300%F00 Filipinos annually. In coordination with the 1epartment of + riculture, the 1/* shall intensify the promotion of do vaccination, do population control, as well as the control of stray animals. In accordance with A+ 9'$3 or ,&he Aabies +ct of 3007., rabies control ordinances shall be strictly implemented. In the same manner, the public shall be informed on the proper mana ement of animal bites andCor rabies eJposures.
