Forces and Torques on Currents (Default)

March 2014

The next six questions pertain to the situation described below. A rectangular loop of wire with sides H = 21 cm and W = 61 cm is located in a region containing a constant magnetic field B = 1.05 T that is aligned with the positive y-axis as shown. The loop carries current I = 373 mA. The plane of the loop is inclined at an angle = 24o with respect to the x-axis.

1) What is x, the x-component of the magnetic moment vector of the loop? A-m2 2) What is y , the y-component of the magnetic moment vector of the loop? A-m2 3) What is z, the z-component of the torque exerted on the loop? N-m 4) What is Fbc, the magnitude of the force exerted on segment bc of the loop?. N 5) What is the direction of the force that is exerted on the segment bc of the loop? a. b. c. d. e. along negative x-direction along negative y-direction along positive x-direction along positive y-direction none of the above

The next six questions pertain to the situation described below. A wire formed in the shape of a right triangle with base Lab = 21 cm and height Lbc = 61 cm carries current I = 335 mA as shown in Position 1. The wire is located in a region containing a constant magnetic field B = 1.39 T aligned with the positive z-axis.

7) What is Fac,x, the x-component of the force on the segment of the wire that connects points a and c in Position 1? N 8) What is Fac,y , the y-component of the force on the segment of the wire that connects points a and c in Position 1? N 9) The wire is now rotated 180o about the y-axis to Position 2, as shown. What is U12, the change in potential energy of the wire? Note that U12 is a signed number. U12 is positive if the potential energy in Position 2 is higher than the potential energy in Position 1. J 10) The wire is now rotated back 90o about the y-axis towards position 1. If the wire is released from this position, how would it move? a. It would rotate towards Position 1 b. It would rotate towards Position 2 c. It would remain stationary https://www.smartphysics.com/Course/SetTool?unitItemSetID=74051&enrollmentID=65784

c. It would remain stationary 11) The wire is now returned to Position 1 and then rotated 180o about the x-axis to Position 3, as shown. What is U13, the change in potential energy of the wire? If the potential energy increases in going from Position 1 to Position 3, the change in potential energy is positive.
