Chapter- 1 Introduction

Importance of foreign trade

All countries need goods and ser0ices to satis%+ -ants o% their ,eo,le. #roduction o% goods and ser0ices re5uires resources. &o countr+ can ,roduce all the goods and ser0ices that it re5uires. It has to *u+ %ro other countries -hat it cannot ,roduce or can ,roduce less than its re5uire ents. Si ilarl+ it sells to other countries the goods -hich it has in sur,lus 5uantities. Foreign trade is exchange of capital, goods, and services across international borders or territories. It refers to export of goods and services by a firm to a foreign-based buyer (importer). In most countries, it represents a significant share of gross domestic product (GD ). !hile international trade has been present throughout much of history its economic, social, and political importance has been on the rise in recent centuries. Industriali"ation, advanced transportation, globali"ation, multinational corporations, and outsourcing are all having a ma#or impact on the international trade system. Increasing international trade is crucial to the continuance of globali"ation. International trade is a ma#or source of economic revenue for any nation that is considered a $orld po$er. !ithout international trade, nations $ould be limited to the goods and services produced $ithin their o$n borders.

Foreign trade is typically more costly than domestic trade. %he reason is that a border typically imposes additional costs such as tariffs, time costs due to border delays and costs associated $ith country differences such as language, the legal system or culture. :n the e0e o% Inde, endence in 1?"@, %oreign trade o% India -as t+,ical o% a colonial and agricultural econo +. 9rade relations -ere ainl+ con%ined to Britain and other >o E3,orts consisted chie%l+ o% raon-ealth countries. aterials and ,lantation cro,s
