DREXEL UNIVERSITY Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering CHE 206: Basic Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics Winter 2013-14

T/Th 9:30-11:00 Drexel Plaza GL 48 Instructor: Prof. C. F. Abrams 483 CAT, cfa22@drexel.edu Office Hours: W 3:00 5:00 pm or by appointment TA: Andrew Dillon ad987@drexel.edu HW Help Sessions: M 4-5 and W 3-5 Location: TBD

Course Description: Students learn theory and application of the principles of conservation of energy and the tendency toward equilibrium states to solve problems in energy flow and prediction of equilibrium states. Students learn to estimate volumetric and thermal properties of non-ideal fluids. Students learn the theory and application of single-component phase equilibrium and are introduced to mixture thermodynamics. Text: Sandler, Chemical, Biochemical, and Engineering Thermodynamics (4th Edition) Grading: Homework Quizzes (2) Midterm exam Final exam 20% 20% (10% each) 25% 35%

Course Requirements: HOMEWORK: There will be one homework set per week of lecture. All homework sets are due in class on Thursdays of their respective weeks. All homework must be turned in on engineering paper and stapled. No late homework accepted. Come to class on Thursdays with your work ready to turn in. All work is to be individual. Copying homework is a violation of University policy and will be dealt with accordingly. Homework sets are graded by the TA, and questions regarding the grading of homework sets are therefore referred to the TA. It is taken for granted that you have (a) a handheld calculator and (b) access to a PC as some homework problems require in-depth computation. QUIZZES: The in-class quizzes are closed-book/closed-notes, but you are allowed a single sheet (8.5x11 in.) of your own handwritten notes. Quiz solutions must be presented on engineering paper or on paper provided (no blue books). No make-up quizzes will be given. EXAMS: The in-class and final exams are closed-book/closed-notes, but you are allowed three sheets (8.5x11 in.) of your own handwritten notes. Exam solutions must be Drexel University Chemical and Biological Engineering CHE 206 Basic Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics 201325 Abrams 1
