Before the rain

Before extensive rain started to fall in Burgersfort this week, jostling clouds made for spectacular sunsets, setting the sky on fire!

Isaiah 60:19 New International Version (NIV) The sun will no more be your light by day, nor will the brightness of the moon shine on you, for the Lord will be your everlasting light, and your God will be your glory.

The local State Vets annual Rabies Vaccination Campaign in the area was a hit this week. Kgautswanes international attraction

Kgautswane seems to have an immense attraction for overseas visitors and students. The Kgautswane Thusong Service Centre becomes the spill around which visitors plan their visits. The centre is home base for 12 German volunteers who are in South Africa on a one year programme. Recently professors from Tanzania, Kenya, Namibia and Botswana also visited the centre to share ideas and learn more about how they operate. At the moment it is also home to Mr Casey Mickelson (25) from Michigan in the United States. He was considering Ghana as his African destination when a friend told him about Kgautswane. Mickelson is a full time paramedic and had just finished his masters degree in Business Administration. He is visiting Kgautswane as the last step to finish his Global Business Experience qualification. In Kgautswane he visits ill patients and assists in fund raising for local schools, crches and much more. Mickelson said: Life in South Africa is relaxed compared to life at home. Back home I juggle three jobs - one full time and two part time jobs. It is always hectic. Apart from the slow way of life in Kgautswane he has also enjoyed the hospitality of the local villagers who welcomed him into their midst. (Photographs and information: Doc Marebane).

Election day as a non-trading

South Africa is preparing for the national election on 7 May 2014. On 25 February President Jacob Zuma signed a proclamation which declared the date of the election. According to Section 2A of the Public Holiday Act he also declared the day a public holiday. The Congress of SA Trade Unions (Cosatu) reacted to the proclamation with a call to have the public holiday converted into a nontrading public holiday. Cosatu has for many year demanded that commemorative public holidays and election days should be declared non-trading public holidays, said acting general secretary Bheki Ntshalintshali. He added that they call for this in order to ensure that all workers, especially those in sectors such as farming and retail, should be free to join commemorative events and to vote, without fear of disciplinary charges from their employers. In certain sectors such as emergency services that cannot close down for the day, individuals are granted special votes that will enable them to vote on a different date than 7 May. Cosatu has already submitted notices recognised under the Labour Relations Act to protect workers who refuse to work on 1 May which is a public holiday - Workers Day in South Africa. Platinum Gazette asked readers what they think about the call for a non-trading public holiday on 7 May.

Mr George Boshomane said: We must close the shops so that everyone can go and vote in the elections. I support Cosatus call. If we dont go out to vote our children will suffer.

Ms Thabitha Mashaba said: They must not make it a non-trading holiday and have all the shops closed. People have enough time to go and vote before and after work. It is unnecessary to close.

Ms Dikeledi Mathonsi said: Yes, I support them. All the shops must close because it is a voting day. Perhaps if some people have finished voting they can go to work to earn the Mandelas. On that election day people should also remember our hero Mandela and go to vote.

Me. Nastasja Schutte s: Dis belaglik!

Mr Piet Aphane said: The shops, restaurants and taverns must be open. Life still needs to go on. If they close the people cannot buy food. I think there is enough time for those who are working to still go and vote.

Mr Nelson Masitha said: No, no, no! Where must we go to release the stress after voting? Elections are not forced. It is a personal thing. People who work can go cast their vote before or after work.

Mr Lifie Tlhaka said: Everything should be closed on election day. If we keep shops open the people will not be able to exercise their voting rights. We can buy this and that the day before. After all, it is the national election.

Mr MO Mabilo said: It is good to be open on election day. At tjaila time the workers can go and vote.

Ms Meta Komane said: Shops must open. It will be difficult for people who do not vote if nothing is open. It must be a normal day to help our economy. Some people dont vote and they must be able to shop. Schools should actually also be open, but it is a problem that many schools are used as voting stations.

Ms Mama Maile said: Everything must be open and people working must simply go to vote before they go to work.

public holiday - your views

Mr Petros Molopo said: Businesses must open on election day. No, no, no, if we close everything well chase investors away. People can vote after work.

Mr Frans Makofane said: Shops must be open, but everyone must also vote. If you have to vote do it either before or after work.

Mnr.

Mr Khutso Morele said: It is necessary to close everything. The people working should also get a chance to go and vote. Some have to travel long distances and dont have the time to go and vote before or after work.

Mr Patlama Sfarzo and Mr Harry Moloto said: We think the shops should be open. Us - we dont vote. We cannot see why we should vote. So we want the shops to be open. Workers who want to vote must go there first and then come to work. Right: Mr Thabiso Mphahlele said: Its a good idea to make election day a non-trading public holiday. We have so many holidays at least this one will have a point. Some of us knock-off late and when you go to the voting station they are already closed. I support this one.

Me.

Mr Sakkie Maimela said: It is not necessary to have a non-trading public holiday on 7 May. The workers will have enough time to vote before or after work.

Mr Phineas Tshehla said: No, the shops must not close on that day. Their workers will have a chance to go and vote before or after work.
