Before you begin, make sure the virtual machine is powered on and the guest operating system is running.
To install VMware Tools in a Linux guest: 1 - On the host, select VM !nstall VMware "ools.
!f an earlier version of VMware "ools is installed, the menu item is #pdate VMware "ools. !f the current version is installed, the menu item is $einstall VMware "ools. % - On the guest, log in as root. & - !f your 'inu( distribution does not automatically mount )*-$OMs, mount the VMware "ools virtual )*-$OM image. a - !f necessary, create the +mnt+cdrom directory, mkdir +mnt+cdrom b - Mount the )*-$OM drive. -ome 'inu( distributions use different device names or organi.e the +dev directory differently. !f your )*-$OM drive is not +dev+cdrom or if the mount point for a )*-$OM is not +mnt+cdrom, modify the command to reflect the conventions used by your distribution. mount +dev+cdrom +mnt+cdrom
2 - !f a previous installation e(ists, delete the previous vmware-tools-distrib directory. "he location of this directory depends on where you placed it during the previous installation. Often it is placed in +tmp+vmware-tools-distrib.
3 - #ncompress the installer, tar .(pf +mnt+cdrom+VMware"ools-4(.(.( -4yyyy .tar.g. "he value 4(.(.( is the product version number and 4yyyy is the build number of the product release.
5 - !f necessary, unmount the )*-$OM image. !f your 'inu( distribution automatically mounted the )*-$OM, you do not need to unmount the image. umount +dev+cdrom
$espond to the 7uestions the command-line wi.ard displays on the screen. 8ress 9nter to accept the default value. "he configuration file, vmware-config-tools.pl, runs after the installer file finishes running.
: - !f you are updating VMware "ools, reboot the virtual machine or manually reload the pvscsi, vm(net, and vm(net& 'inu( kernel modules. !f you reload the modules, networking on the virtual machine is interrupted.
1; - 9nter the following commands to restore the network, +etc+init.d+network stop rmmod vm(net modprobe vm(net +etc+init.d+network start
1& - !n an < terminal, to start the VMware #ser process, enter the following command,
vmware-user "o change the default VMware "ools configuration options, see Open the VMware
