CityLink XT

CITYLINK\00026 Rev. H 2004-12-01

1. GENERAL
This document describes the CityLink with references to ETSI and SDH technology. A separate
document is available with ANSI and SONET specifications. Ref : CITYLINK\00051.
CityLink Fast Ethernet and EtherLink is described in: CITYLINK IP\00089 and CITYLINK IP\00091
The CityLink is a radio relay equipment for transmission of capacities from STM-0 to STM-1 in the 5 to
38 GHz frequency bands with 32, 64, or 128TCM modulation. The equipment operates in frequency
bands with channel spacing and duplex spacing as given in Table 2-1. Equipment specifications are in
accordance with relevant standards by ITU, ETSI and IEC.
The CityLink system consists of an Indoor Unit (IDU), an Outdoor Unit (ODU) and an antenna.
To reduce losses between the transceiver and the antenna, the ODU containing all the RF modules is
mounted at or nearby the antenna. The ODU is connected to the IDU by means of one single coaxial IF
cable. The distance between the IDU and the ODU can be up to 300 meters.
The IDU contains baseband circuitry, modem and ODU interface. The multi modulation modem enables
an easy selection of frequency plan arrangement and channel bandwidth eliminating the need for separate
modem versions. The IDU performs dual forward error coding contributing to excellent system gain. It
can have different line interface options, with an easy interchange from electrical STM-1 to various
optical STM-1 line interface plug-in modules. The indoor unit can also be equipped with an optional
multiplex unit, giving access to 21x2 Mbit/s, 3x34/45 Mbit/s or a STM-1 cross connect unit. In
configurations where the switch unit is used the line interface unit and multiplexer are placed in the
switch unit.

1.1.1 1+0 configuration

This system consists of one indoor unit and one outdoor unit interconnected with a single coaxial cable.
Figure 1-2 shows a 1+0 system overview. The IDU is a single unit with plug-in STM-1 line interface and
the optional Multiplexer Unit. The ODU is assembled by transceiver and branching. See also description
of ODU types in Chapter 2.4.3.

1.1.2 HSB Configuration

In Hot Standby configuration the IDU, the transceiver unit, and the coaxial cable between IDU and ODU
are duplicated. The two transceivers share the same branching unit/hybrid (see also description of the
ODU part in Chapter2.4.3.). A switch at radio frequency level, included in the branching unit Note1, allows
for switching between the two transmitters. A Switching Unit is placed between the two IDUs and
performs hitless switching in the receive direction. The STM-1 line interface and Multiplex plug-in
modules are mounted in this switching unit. Signal interconnection between the IDUs and the switching
unit is by a multi connector and a split cable. See Chapter 9 for more details about the radio protection
switching function.

1.1.3 Hot standby configuration Dual Antenna Space Diversity

The Hot Standby configuration is also available with duplicated antenna, providing path diversity effect.
Tx-switching is achieved by muting the standby transmitter from the IDU. Both receivers are active and
selection of receive signal is performed by the IDU-switch. This configuration gives better system gain as
no HSB-hybrid loss is added. The configuration is available for 13-38 GHz, for 5-11 GHz HSB Hybrid
SD is an alternative. See chapter 1.1.8.

1.1.5 1+1 Frequency Diversity

A 1+1 Frequency Diversity system operates on two frequencies where both transmitters are active.
Like in a HSB system the IDU, the ODU and the cable between them are protected and hitless switching
is performed by the switch unit. User interfaces are placed in the switch unit.
The system can be single or dual polarized. Single polarized system can not operate on adjacent channels.
In 13-23 GHz the dual polarized system has the advantage that the 2+0 coupler is not needed and better
system gain is achieved.
The ODU solutions are different in 5-11 GHz and 13-23 GHz. See figures below.
See Chapter 9 for more details about the radio protection switching function.

1.1.6 2+0 configuration

The 2+0 system can be used in three types of configuration:
Dual Frequency - Single Polarisation (DF-SP) utilise two frequencies on one polarisation.
Adjacent channels can not be used.
Alternating Polarisation (AP) utilise one frequency on each polarisation.
Single Frequency - Dual Polarisation (SF-DP) utilise the same frequency on both polarisations.
The ODU solutions are different in L6-11 GHz and 13-38 GHz. See figures below for block diagrams.

1.2.2 Drop or Continue Chain topology, 2Mbit/s example

In chain topology configuration the traffic routed to the 21x2 Mbit/s tributary ports is selected from the
TU12s in the STM-1 signal from the radio side or alternatively from the STM-1 line interface. The "unterminated" TU-12/VC-12 will be routed between the radio side (modem) and the STM-1 line interface.

1.2.3 Add Drop Ring topology, 2Mbit/s example

In ring topologies the traffic routed to the 21x2 Mbit/s tributary ports is selected from the TU12s in the
STM-1 signal from the radio side and from the STM-1 line interface. The multiplex unit selects the
working trail on the receive side and sends on both trails in the transmit side. SNCP (Sub Network
Connection Protection) is used in this topology. The "un-terminated" TU-12/VC-12 will be routed
between the radio side and the STM-1 line interface. See figure below:

Figure 1-18 Ring Topology with 21x2Mb/s Add and Drop

The figure shows one 2 Mbit/s connection in a ring structure. In one direction the 2 Mbit/s circuits enters
the ring as a VC-12 inside the STM-1 (Site A). In the radio the VC-12 is split into two directions. One
trail from Site A to Site B, and the other from Site A > Site D > Site C > Site B. The
working trail is selected at the receive side. The switching is individual for each of the VC-12s and is
independent in the two directions.

1.2.4 3x34/45 Mb/S and STM-1 X-connect

The 3x34/45 Mbit/s Multiplex Unit can be used in the same way as the 21x2 Mbit/s unit, in addition it
can be configured for broadcast configuration.
The STM1 X-connect can also be used to build branch topologies from a chain or a ring. The traffic to the
branch path or chain are then routed on VC-3 or VC-12 level to the tributary interface.

2.4 Mechanical characteristics

2.4.1 Installation
The equipment is very easy and quick to install. It is designed for stationary use in split mount
installations. One coaxial cable for each IDU / ODU pair is used. (i.e. Two cables needed for HSB, 1+1
FD and 2+0 systems).
The IDU can be installed as a stand-alone unit, or it can be mounted within an ETSI standard cabinet (ref.
ETSI EN 300 119) or in a standard 19 rack. (ref. IEC 297-2 and IEC 297-3).
The ODU can be mounted on the back of Nera antennas (=0.3 m, 0,45 m, 0.6 m or 1.2 m), or on a
vertical column (=60-115). A column arrangement for tower, wall, and roof mounting is optionally
supplied. ODUs in L6-11 GHz can only be mounted on the antenna pole/column.

2.4.2 IDU Description

The IDU is a single unit containing all the baseband circuitry, SDH processing and modem functions. All
connections are on the front of the unit. Figure 2-4 shows the IDU and the user connections on the IDU.
The IDU contains a plug-in STM-1 line interface, making it easy to select electrical or different types of
optical STM-1 line interfaces. The IDU does also have three options for embedded multiplexer.

2.10 System synchronisation

The CityLink contains an optional SETS function. In RST mode the SETS function is not required and
the incoming STM-1 is transmitted without re-timing. Transmit and receive directions are independent
from each other and can have different timing sources.
In MST mode the SETS function is providing the equipment clock. The SETS units can be synchronised
to one of the following sources:
155 Mbit/s signal from line side
155 Mbit/s signal from radio side
2 MHz clock input
One selectable 2 Mbit/s input signal on 21x2 Mbit/s multiplex unit (only applicable if 21x2 Mbit/s
multiplex unit is present.
155 Mbit/s signal from tributary side (only applicable if STM-1 X-connect unit is present)
Internal oscillator (free running)
The user sets the available synchronisation references in priority order. The highest quality source is used
to synchronise the equipment clock, but if there are several sources available with equally high quality,
the source with higher priority is used. If a timing source is not available (loss of signal) or its timing
signal is outside tolerances, the SETS unit will select the next available source with the highest quality.

2.10.1 Synchronisation status messaging

Synchronisation status messaging can be used to ensure that the best available timing source will be used.
The messaging is also used to prevent timing loops in SDH ring and mesh networks. The status
messaging is transferred in the S1 byte in the Section Overhead.
The synchronisation status quality levels are shown in the table below.

2.11 Control and Supervision facilities

In order to facilitate system control and fault finding, an internal control- and supervision system is
included. This system is used to perform configuration-, fault-, event-, performance and security
management. See Chapter 10 for more details.

2.11.1 Loopbacks
For testing and fault finding there is a variety of integrated configurable loopbacks. Figure 2-6 and the
table below shows possible loops for the main data. In addition, the 64 kbit/s channel and the E1 wayside
channel may be looped. Only one loop may be active at any time.
In the hot standby IDU switch far end loops for each protected interface are included.

2.11.2 PRBS test signal

The IDU has an integrated test function consisting of a PRBS generator and bit error counter function.
The test function can be used to insert a PRBS test signal into the 2 Mb/s Wayside or (if the mux function
is present) any of the 2/34/45 Mb/s tributary signals.
The bit error counter can present number of bit errors or the average bit error rate over the elapsed test
time. The directions can be tested individually or both go and return channel can be tested in combination
with the loop function.

CITYLINK\00026 Rev. H 2004-12-01

2.11.3 MS-AIS insertion

MS-AIS may be inserted when one of the following criteria is detected:
Loss of synchronisation at 155 Mbit/s signal.
RF identification mismatch.
HBER (high bit error rate) threshold, in direction from the transceiver, is exceeded.
Regenerator section trace (J0) mismatch.
The MS-AIS insertion, in both directions, cab be configured by the user.
The MS-AIS removal time may be configured from 0 to 199 seconds in one-second steps.

3. TRANSCEIVER CHARACTERISTICS
3.1 RF-input monitoring
One BNC/TNC connector at the transceiver unit is available for RF-input monitoring. In ODU type I and
II 5-23 GHz, the connector is located on the branching/ODU housing.
The RF-input may also be monitored at the local LCT (NEW Configurator) or by NEW-NMS.
The measurement refers to point C.
Accuracy:

3 dB for input levels from 60 dBm to 30 dBm. ( 2 dB for 5 - 11 GHz)

The accuracy applies to software reading and also the voltage at the BNC/TNC connector
converted into dB.

3.2 Spurious emissions

ETSI: The limit values of transmitter spurious emissions measured in point C are shown in Table 3-1.
According to CEPT/ERC Recommendation 74-01, the external spurious emissions are defined as
emissions at frequencies which are outside the nominal carrier frequency +/- 250% of the relevant
channel separation.

3.3.6 Automatic/Manual Transmitter Power Control (ATPC/MTPC)

ATPC is an optional feature, which is aimed to drive the TX power amplifier output level from a proper
minimum, which is calculated to facilitate the radio network planning and is used in the case of normal
propagation, up to a maximum value, which is given in Chapter 3.3.1. When ATPC is disabled (i.e.
MTPC mode), the output power can be set by the user.

4. SYSTEM CHARACTERISTICS FOR SPACE DIVERSITY (SD)

4.1 General
A Space Diversity system includes a Space Diversity transceiver unit, which contains one transmitter and
two receivers. The control functions are included in the transceiver unit.

4.2 Combining principles and performance

The combining method is in-phase IF-combining. The principle of the combiner is shown in Figure 4-1.
The combiner setpoint is determined by the measurements of both levels (level detection) and the signal
spectre (dispersion analysis). The dispersion value is found by looking at the three different detectors for
low, middle and high frequency.

Figure 4-1: Combining principle of Space Diversity transceiver

When both receiver inputs (main and diversity, points B and BD) are fed with low level input signals of
the same level at an arbitrary phase difference, input level limits for specified BER values shall be 2.5 dB
below those given in 3.4 for the case without diversity.
Maximum difference of wave-guide lengths between main and diversity antennas is 30 meters. The static
delay compensation is automatically adjusted by the use of a LCT or NEW-NMS. No need for external
delay compensation or external instruments.

5. BRANCHING AND RF-FILTERING CHARACTERISTICS

5.1 General description
Four different ODU variants are used. They are referred to as Type I ODU Version 1 and 2, Type II ODU
and Type III ODU. Type I and II has a separate branching unit.
Type I ODU Version 1, 18 GHz 1560 Duplex and 23 GHz
The branching unit is available in three different versions; one for 1+0 systems, one for hot standby
systems and one 2+0 (DF-SP) systems. The 2+0 SF-DP/AP systems use two 1+0 branchings. Antenna
circulator and RF filters are included in the branching unit. In the hot standby version the RF switch and
RF splitter are also included in the branching unit. The branching unit uses broadband RF filters. One or
two sets (high/low) of the branching unit cover the whole band for each duplex/configuration.
Type I ODU Version 2, 13 GHz, 15 GHz, 18 GHz 1010 MHz Duplex
The branching unit is available in two different versions; one for 1+0 branching and one hot standby
branching. The 2+0 or 1+1 FD systems use two 1+0 branchings. In a single polarized system they are
connected by a coupler. Antenna circulator and RF filters are included in the branching unit. In the hot
standby version the RF switch and RF splitter are also included in the branching unit. The branching unit
uses broadband RF filters. One or two sets (high/low) of the branching unit cover the whole band for each
duplex/configuration.
Type II ODU, 6 11 GHz
The branching unit consists of a configuration dependant branching unit and field replacable RF channel
filters. The branching is not sub-band dependant as RF-channel filters are used. The branching with filter
is mounted in a housing witch also serves as interface towards the transceivers. Two transceivers can be
mounted on this box, one on each side. The waveguide flange connections are at the bottom.
The branching with housing is available in different versions covering the available configurations and
Space Diversity. In the hot standby version the RF switch and RF splitter is part of the branching unit.
Type III ODU, 26 38 GHz
The ODU is an integrated unit with a multichannel diplexer as part of the unit. Only one mechanical
design is used, in hot standby and 2+0 systems two transceivers are mounted on a frame, which includes
an RF power combiner/splitter. In each frequency band and duplex spacing two high and two low ODUs
are available.

5.2 Interface to antenna feeder system

The interface between the ODU and the antenna feeder system is rectangular waveguide for 6-38 GHz.
For 5 GHz N-connector is used. The waveguide flange type can be found in Table 5-1. Integrated antenna
solution is available for 13 38 GHz.

8.4 64 kbit/s and wayside channels

8.4.1 General
As an optional feature, interfaces for two 64 kbit/s data channels and one 2.048 Mbit/s wayside channel
are available. The wayside and the 64 kbit/s channels are transmitted as parts of SOH. The wayside
channel uses the 35 shadowed bytes shown in Table 8-1 Utilisation of SOH bytes. Provided that the
shadowed bytes are available, the wayside channel can also be used in RS mode because the B2-parity
will not be affected. When the wayside channel is not used, any of the shadowed bytes (except the
National Use bytes in last low) in the table may also be used for the 64 kbit/s data channels.
Use of the wayside channel will limit the number of bytes available for the 64 kbit/s channels to E1, E2,
F1, Z1, Z2, MS#1 and MS#2. In RS-mode only E1, F1, MS#1 and MS#2 are available for 64 kbit/s
channels.

10. MANAGEMENT SYSTEM CHARACTERISTICS

10.1 General
An integrated supervision system makes the CityLink capable of functioning as a Network Element (NE)
in a managed SDH transmission network. The supervision systems on the various radio-relay stations are
exchanging information over the embedded communication channel, ECC. Standardised use of QECC is
provided. Actual channel to be used for management traffic is configurable (se section 10.2). For set up
and configuration of the radio the NEW-Configurator SoftWare, is needed. For network management and
operation CityLink can be connected to the Nera Element vieW - Network Management System (NEWNMS). NEW-NMS can be used as a mediation device to connect all Nera radios to a higher order
management system through the optional SNMP- or CORBA agents.
The NEW-NMS element manager offers services such as:
Fault management:

collecting and logging alarms and analogue measurements from the

elements.

Performance management:

collecting and logging quality measurements according to standards

(G.784)

Configuration management:

addresses the configuration of elements, getting/setting configuration

from/to elements and SW download functions.

Security management:

deals with user privileges and how this is administrated network.

10.1.1 Event logging

The CityLink can log events and faults in the local fault log. The log size is 10.000 events. The log can be
set to wrap-around or halt when it is full. Alarm logging can be masked based on severity level. The
operator can also clear the log.

10.1.2 Monitoring of system performance

Transmission performance data is monitored continuously by the built-in supervision function. The
supervision function performs measurements and calculations based on the BIP-codes in the SOH. Error
information from the Trellis decoder in the demodulator is also available. See description of the error
pulse outputs in Chapter 10.4.6

10.1.3 System performance calculations

Performance data can be presented according to ITU-T Rec. G.826. The following system quality
calculations are included:

10.1.4 Performance record logging

The CityLink calculate the performance in G.826 performance parameters based on B1, B2, and M1
parity checksums. The performance records are calculated for STM-1 line interface and for received
STM-1 from radio side. 15-min, 24-hour and month records are calculated. The log contains the current
and last month, current and last 24-hour and current and the sixteen last 15-min records.
Threshold values can be defined each of the performance records and a performance alarm will be raised
if the threshold is exceeded for any of the periods.
In addition the CityLink contains cumulative error counters for B1, B2, and M1 parity pulses and for the
G.826 performance parameters. The operator can read and reset the counters.

10.1.5 Security management

The user must have a username and password defined in the CityLink in order to log in. Each user name
is defined with access privileges. Four levels are defined;
User level

Privileges

Passive Users

Passive users are only able to monitor data. They are not able to collect data or change
the network configuration.

Active Users

Active users are able to collect data and change some communication settings, but not
commands that can make unrecoverable configuration changes.

Master Users

Master users have access to all NEW-NMS commands, except those attended with
user account administration.

Admin Users

Admin users have access to all NEW-NMS commands. The Admin user is the
administrator and is responsible for adding, deleting and managing user accounts and
privileges.

10.1.6 Security event logging

The CityLink can log events related to security. The log size is 1000 events. The log can be set to wraparound or halt when it is full. The operator can also clear the log.

54

CityLink XT

CITYLINK\00026 Rev. H 2004-12-01

10.2 ECC (Embedded Communication Channel)

The ECC channel can be configured by the operator. Normally DCC-r (D1 to D3) is used for ECC
purpose but any other available SOH byte can be used. When DCC-r is used the transmission capacity is
192 kb/s, if another single SOH byte is used the transmission capacity is 64kb/s. The protocol used can
be NNP (Nera Networking Protocol), TCP/IP or Qecc. The link layer properties of the Qecc can be
configured by the operator. The routing protocol used for Qecc is IS-IS (ISO 10589)

10.2.1 IP Routing
The CityLink contains a routing function that enables routing of TCP/IP and UDP/IP traffic between the
various management interfaces such as the Ethernet interface and the ECC channel. The routing protocol
used is OSPF (Open Shortest Path First)/RIP2. This enables transport of IP based management protocols
for other telecom equipment over a CityLink path.

10.3 Embedded SNMP agent

The optional embedded SNMP agent supports the following management functions.
Basic monitoring of network and interface parameters
Fault Management
Supports enumeration of possible alarms, current alarm table and historic alarms (log).
Analogue measurements
Received signal level.
Performance Management
