1. GENERAL
This document describes the CityLink with references to ETSI and SDH technology. A separate
document is available with ANSI and SONET specifications. Ref : CITYLINK\00051.
CityLink Fast Ethernet and EtherLink is described in: CITYLINK IP\00089 and CITYLINK IP\00091
The CityLink is a radio relay equipment for transmission of capacities from STM-0 to STM-1 in the 5 to
38 GHz frequency bands with 32, 64, or 128TCM modulation. The equipment operates in frequency
bands with channel spacing and duplex spacing as given in Table 2-1. Equipment specifications are in
accordance with relevant standards by ITU, ETSI and IEC.
The CityLink system consists of an Indoor Unit (IDU), an Outdoor Unit (ODU) and an antenna.
To reduce losses between the transceiver and the antenna, the ODU containing all the RF modules is
mounted at or nearby the antenna. The ODU is connected to the IDU by means of one single coaxial IF
cable. The distance between the IDU and the ODU can be up to 300 meters.
The IDU contains baseband circuitry, modem and ODU interface. The multi modulation modem enables
an easy selection of frequency plan arrangement and channel bandwidth eliminating the need for separate
modem versions. The IDU performs dual forward error coding contributing to excellent system gain. It
can have different line interface options, with an easy interchange from electrical STM-1 to various
optical STM-1 line interface plug-in modules. The indoor unit can also be equipped with an optional
multiplex unit, giving access to 21x2 Mbit/s, 3x34/45 Mbit/s or a STM-1 cross connect unit. In
configurations where the switch unit is used the line interface unit and multiplexer are placed in the
switch unit.

The figure shows one 2 Mbit/s connection in a ring structure. In one direction the 2 Mbit/s circuits enters
the ring as a VC-12 inside the STM-1 (Site A). In the radio the VC-12 is split into two directions. One
trail from Site A to Site B, and the other from Site A > Site D > Site C > Site B. The
working trail is selected at the receive side. The switching is individual for each of the VC-12s and is
independent in the two directions.

The Type II ODU consists of a weatherproof box containing the branching system and a transceiver unit
mounted on the branching box. Two transceivers can be mounted to the branching unit for HSB, 1+1 FD
or 2+0 configuration. The ODU is mounted on a column behind the antenna. The branching unit contains
RF channel filters and antenna circulator. The Hot Standby branching contains in addition a RF switch for
transmit direction and a RF power splitter for the receive direction.
22
CityLink XT
The Type I version 1 ODU consists of a branching unit and a Transceiver. The branching is mounted on
the back of the antenna or detached on a mounting frame on a mast/pole. The Transceiver module is a
plug-in unit mounted on the branching. In 1+0 configuration the branching unit will hold only one
transceiver and in Hot Standby and 2+0 DF-SP configurations the branching will hold two transceivers.
The branching module contains band pass filters and antenna duplexer. The Hot Standby branching
contains in addition an RF switch for transmit direction and an RF power splitter for the receive direction.
The 2+0 branching contains an RF combiner for transmit side and an RF power splitter for receive side.
Two 1+0 ODUs are used for dual polarized 2+0 systems.
Type I ODU, version 2
The Type I, version II ODU consists of a weatherproof box containing the branching and transceivers.
The ODU housing containing the multichannel branching comes in two versions, 1+0 and HSB. The Hot
Standby branching contains in addition to the diplexer a RF switch for transmit direction and a RF power
splitter for the receive direction. 2+0 and 1+1 FD configurations are using two 1+0 ODUs which may be
connected with a 2+0 coupler for single polarized systems. The ODU is mounted directly behind the
antenna on an integrated frame or optionally on a mounting frame for pole mounting. On the integrated
frame two units can be mounted.
CityLink XT
23
The Type III of the ODU consists of a Transceiver unit with a built in multichannel diplexer. The ODU
box is mounted on the antenna or on a pole/column behind the antenna. In Hot Standby configurations the
ODU is mounted on a frame containing a RF combiner/power splitter. As an alternative duplicated
antennas can be used, then the RF combiner/power splitter is omitted. In 2+0 DF-SP configuration the
ODU part is identical to a Hot Standby configuration except that both transceivers are transmitting.
2.4.5 Dimensions
IDU* :
IDU switch *:
The minimum height of a complete Hot Standby IDU is: 3RU (1RU = 44.45 mm).
*The width and depth of the unit are exclusive flanges (mounting brackets) and table studs for free-standing mounting. Special
brackets for mounting into different cabinets are available.

2.11.1 Loopbacks
For testing and fault finding there is a variety of integrated configurable loopbacks. Figure 2-6 and the
table below shows possible loops for the main data. In addition, the 64 kbit/s channel and the E1 wayside
channel may be looped. Only one loop may be active at any time.
In the hot standby IDU switch far end loops for each protected interface are included.

3. TRANSCEIVER CHARACTERISTICS
3.1 RF-input monitoring
One BNC/TNC connector at the transceiver unit is available for RF-input monitoring. In ODU type I and
II 5-23 GHz, the connector is located on the branching/ODU housing.
The RF-input may also be monitored at the local LCT (NEW Configurator) or by NEW-NMS.
The measurement refers to point C.

When both receiver inputs (main and diversity, points B and BD) are fed with low level input signals of
the same level at an arbitrary phase difference, input level limits for specified BER values shall be 2.5 dB
below those given in 3.4 for the case without diversity.
Maximum difference of wave-guide lengths between main and diversity antennas is 30 meters. The static
delay compensation is automatically adjusted by the use of a LCT or NEW-NMS. No need for external
delay compensation or external instruments.

Passive Users
Passive users are only able to monitor data. They are not able to collect data or change
the network configuration.
Active Users
Active users are able to collect data and change some communication settings, but not
commands that can make unrecoverable configuration changes.
Master Users
Master users have access to all NEW-NMS commands, except those attended with
user account administration.
Admin Users
Admin users have access to all NEW-NMS commands. The Admin user is the
administrator and is responsible for adding, deleting and managing user accounts and
privileges.

10.2.1 IP Routing
The CityLink contains a routing function that enables routing of TCP/IP and UDP/IP traffic between the
various management interfaces such as the Ethernet interface and the ECC channel. The routing protocol
used is OSPF (Open Shortest Path First)/RIP2. This enables transport of IP based management protocols
for other telecom equipment over a CityLink path.
