RUNNING, LYDIARD AND THE PURSUIT OF EXCELLENCE


We live in unique times. Our access to information about health and wellbeing is unparalleled. Yet we live in a world of declining tness levels, widespread diseases and athletes too often known as cheats instead of champions. How can todays athlete navigate the tsunami of information and embrace tness that is regenerative and fullling? Is Lydiard Training still relevant for athletes? Or has it been surpassed by scientic and technological advancements? Will the human body be made redundant by the machine? Or will humans evolve into super-beings? Weaving the practical with the philosophical, Lorraine Moller explores the code of the ancient Olympians, the legacy of Lydiard training and her personal experiences as a coach and Olympic athlete to address these questions and help you set your compass for tness, vitality and peak performance.

BIOGRAPHY
A native of New Zealand, Lorraine began her celebrated and unprecedented 28 year international running career as a barefooted schoolgirl on a grassy eld in her hometown of Putaruru. At the age of 41, she wound up her running career competing in her fourth Olympic marathon, the only woman in the world to complete all of the rst four Olympic marathons for women. Her accomplishments include the longest winning debut marathon streak by any runner, wins in the Boston Marathon, three-time winner of the Avon Womens World Marathon Championship, three-time winner of the Osaka International Ladies Marathon, and an Olympic bronze medallist in the womens marathon in Barcelona in 1992. She was also the winner of three Commonwealth Games medals, a nalist in two Track & Field World Championships, held 4 World Bests, and, undefeated as a Masters runner, ranked number one in the world for 1995 and 1996. Since retiring from competitive sport in 1996, this long time Colorado resident has dedicated herself as Vice President of Hearts of Gold, a charitable organisation that raises money through running events in Japan, Cambodia, East Timor and Mongolia. She is also co-founder of The Lydiard Foundation, a USA based organisation focused on the continuing education of coaches and athletes using the principles of the great coach Arthur Lydiard. During the Sydney 2000 Olympics, Lorraine nally struck gold by becoming a rst-time mum at age 45 to daughter, Jasmine. Her book, On the Wings of Mercury rose to number two on the NZ best seller list in 2007 and was voted Best Sports Biography of 2008.
