QU DELL 2010 STUDY PLAN Program Objectives The major in English strives to: 1.

Enable students to develop effective communication skills. 2. Develop students appreciation for the diversities of languages and cultures. 3. Familiarize students with linguistics, its sub-branches, applications and relations to other disciplines. 4. Introduce students to the various literary genres of English in their historical, cultural and artistic contexts. 5. Develop students critical thinking skills and enhance their ability to produce logical and well-structured arguments. Learning Outcomes
1. Identify and understand types of texts and genres, including being able to visual charts and maps, distinguish recognize personal narratives, and interpret excerpts of critical theory. 2. Recognize and deconstruct devices of literary texts, such as themes, purpose, viewpoint, literary symbols, tone and mood, context clues, and figurative language. 3. Identify rhetorical techniques, including persuasive devices (ethos, pathos, logos), cause and effect logic structures, word choice, and style of language. 4. Interpret texts by finding the main idea and support and by drawing logical conclusions and inferences from the texts. 5. Develop written responses to readings, including comparing and contrasting texts and summarizing key information.

Major Declaration In order to declare a major in English, applicants must have a minimum high school percentage of 75, complete all requirements of the Foundation Program and pass the TOEFL with a minimum score of 500 or IELTS with a minimum score of 5.5. In addition, applicants must successfully pass the entrance test and interview held by the Department.

Job Opportunities after Graduation Graduates in English will be qualified to work as English teachers and translators, and in the field of communication. They could also work in mass media organizations: newspapers, radio and television. In addition, they could work in non-governmental organizations, the private sector, international aid and development agencies, community services, social organizations, and research organizations.
