RATIONALE
&n<ormation Technology has eEolEed oEer the past <iEe decades in response to the need <or more e<<icient techniHues to manage the signi<icantly increased Eolume and sophistication o< the Inowledge reserEoir o< manIind% &t merges the study o< Computer 6cience Telecommunications and 9<<ice AutomationJ inEolEes the collection storage accessing processing and dissemination o< in<ormation and impacts on on both worI and leisure actiEities% &n a world characterised by technological innoEation and computeri2ed responses to situations in the worI place and in the wider society all citi2ens will need to haEe practical exposure to the techniHues o< &n<ormation Technology in order to staunch bridge the widening gap between Caribbean nations and the deEeloped countries and proEide our citi2ens with the best chances <or surEiEal and growth in this new age% A well structured programme in &n<ormation Technology deEelops computer- related sIills and encourages the deEelopment o< analytical and design sIills which are applicable in all areas o< the curriculum% This uniHue <eature warrants the inclusion o< &n<ormation Technology in the secondary school curriculum% This syllabus is designed to proEide a coherent Eiew o< the signi<icance o< in<ormation in a socioeconomic context% Emphasis is placed on application o< Inowledge and the use o< the computer% This approach has been adopted in recognition o< the impact that changes in the aEailability o< in<ormation can haEe on the educational process% The <ocus is on getting students to deEelop sIills <or li<e in an increasingly technological world rather than on students absorbing a myriad o< seemingly unrelated <acts which may haEe only short term releEance% The syllabus aims to proEide the Iind o< practical experience which includes an element o< discoEery and <osters sel<- con<idence together with the practical sIills that will prepare students to meet the regionKs need <or greatly increased productiEity and cost e<<ectiEe procedures%
