The PASTORS CORNER BY PASTOR SHERRI LEONARD

EveMother of Discontent
Can the serpent be right? He is so beautiful and seems so wise. Am I missing out on something? Is God holding something good? Eve entertained the thought. And so began the slide of the human race into chaos, pain and death. Eve had been blessed with every perfection by a loving Creator. She had a perfect body that was unhampered by disease, deterioration or death. She needed no clothing to perfect her in a climate perfect for her life. The perfect diet grew around her, just waiting to be plucked. Delight filled her days. Animals had no fear of humans and peacefully shared the wealth of the Garden of Eden. He had no need to hide, no need to fear, no need to control, no need to fight. She had never known loneliness, for Adam were her constant companion and lover. Their attachment was complete and uncomplicated-they were one. She was his partner even in the work they gave their lives purpose. of all Eve knew her Creator intimately, meeting him face to face with Adam each day. Perfect-still, Eve wondered. Then she decided: she would have that fruit! So Eve accepted the serpents insinuation that God was holding out on her. We-who still live out the consequences-long to cry, No!" Stop! And in that pivotal crisis of all time, Adam to chose to eat the forbidden fruit. The serpent inserted a tiny wage of this content, which-except for the work of Jesus Christ-open a Chasm of perpetual despair. The perfect love that had permeated the garden no longer existed and that fallen world; the change was immediate. Adam and Eve scrambled to cover their shame, their oneness with God and with each other shattered. Too late, they discovered that they had traded priceless treasures for indeed promises. Beware of discontent. We all face the temptation to believe there is something better out there. We accept that belief; we scorn the One who gives us our deepest security. Life on earth is flawed. Nothing and no one apart from God can satisfy the aching vacuum in us caused by the fall; only Jesus love can feel the gap between what is and what was meant to be. We can never return to the garden. But believers in Christ Jesus will see him face to face in a place better than Eden. Don't you long to be there? Jesus Christ is the only way, just pray with me, Dear Jesus, I believe you are the son of God and I believe you came to earth, lived a holy life, a sinless life. I leave you died for me on the cross. You shed your blood for me. And I believe you rose again from the dead and ascended on high. And I believe you're coming back again as the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords the judge of the whole earth. I come to you right now because I am a sinner. Im asking for your mercy. I'm asking you to save me from my sins. I cannot save myself; I need You to save me. You are the only savior of the man. I need you to be my Savior. Come into my heart. I ask that you. I receive you. I surrender my life to you. Wash me with your blood. Wash away all my sins. Take away all my bondages. Remove all my Stains. I give You my heart, the best I know how and I proclaim You as my Redeemer, my Savior, my King, my Lord. And now before heaven, I declare God is my father, Jesus Christ is my Savior and the Holy Spirit is my comforter. I no longer belong to Satan (the devil). I no longer belong to this world, I belong to God. I am born again! I am a Christian! A child of Almighty God! I am saved!

HIV PREVENTION FAST FACTS

What is HIV?
HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus. The virus attacks cells in your body that fight off infection & keep the body healthy. When HIV has damaged the immune system, someone is said to have AIDS, or acquired immune deficiency syndrome. As HIV takes hold the body produces antibodies in an attempt to fight the virus.

Where is HIV found?

HIV is found in the bodily fluids of a person who has been infected - blood, seUnprotected sex (vaginal, anal and to a lesser extent oral sex) with an in-

men, vaginal fluids & breast milk.

How is HIV transmitted?

fected person . Sharing contaminated syringes, needles or other sharp instruments . From mother to child during pregnancy, childbirth or breast feeding when the mother is al -ready HIV positive, Blood transfusion with contaminated blood.

Can I tell someone has HIV just by looking at them?

No. A person living with HIV may look healthy and feel good just like you. A blood test is the only way a person can find out if he or she is infected with HIV. Can I get HIV from shaking hands or other forms of social contact? No. HIV is not transmitted through non-sexual day-to-day contact. You cannot be infected by shaking someones hand, by hugging someone, by using the same toilet or by drinking from the same glass as a person living with HIV. HIV is not transmitted through coughing or sneezing like some other diseases. There is no need to fear social interaction with people living with HIV. What is the risk of getting HIV from kissing? Transmission though kissing on the mouth carries virtually no risk; no evidence has been found that the virus is spread through saliva by kissing. Are mosquito bites a risk of infection with HIV? HIV is not spread by mosquitoes or other biting insects. Even if the virus enters a mosquito or another sucking or biting insect, it cannot reproduce in insects. Since the insect cannot be infected with HIV, it cannot transmit HIV to the next human it feeds on or bites.

Does HIV only affect certain risk groups like gay men or people who inject drugs?
No. Anyone who has unprotected sex with a person living with HIV can become infected. Similarly if HIV is present and someone shares contaminated injecting equipment with a person infected with HIV, or has a transfusion with contaminated blood they can become infected with HIV. Infants can be infected with HIV from their mothers during pregnancy, during labor or after delivery through breastfeeding.

What should you do if you think you have been exposed to HIV?

You should imme-

diately seek advice from a local health provider who may recommend counseling and testing for HIV or suggest a course of post-exposure prophylaxis. Its important to remember that if you have been newly infected with HIV you could be highly infectious during this early stage.

What is post-exposure prophylaxis?

Post-exposure prophylaxis, or PEP, is a course of an-

tiretroviral drugs prescribed within 48 hours of exposure to HIV to protect against infection. PEP is not 100% effective, even when started soon after exposure, so it is vitally important to try to take every measure to prevent transmission in the first place.

How can you limit your risk of getting HIV through sex?
ing drug use. Use male or female condoms correctly each time you have sex.

Abstain from sex Remain

faithful in a relationship with an uninfected equally faithful partner with no other risk behavior such as inject-

How effective are condoms in preventing HIV?

Male and female condoms are highly

effective in protecting against sexual transmitted infections including HIV. They need to be used every time you have vaginal and anal penetration. In order to achieve the maximum protective effect condoms must be used correctly all the time. Incorrect use can lead to condom slippage or breakage, thus diminishing their protective effect.

How can people who inject drugs reduce their HIV risk?

HIV can be transmitted

through the use of contaminated injecting equipment. But there are certain steps they can take to reduce this risk: If you cannot stop taking drugs completely change from injecting to non-injecting drug use (e.g. smoke or take the drugs orally). Never re-use needles, syringes, drug-preparation equipment and never share with other people. Use a new, sterile syringe (obtained from a reliable source, like a chemist or a needle exchange program) to prepare and inject drugs each time. Use a fresh alcohol swab to clean the skin prior to injection.

How can mother-to-child transmission be prevented?

Transmission of HIV from an

infected mother to her child can occur during pregnancy, labor or after delivery through breastfeeding. The risk of mother-to-child transmission can be significantly reduced by a short treatment of antiretroviral drugs administered to the pregnant mother before the birth and to the child after birth caesarian section. Seek advice from a health professional on breastfeeding. If possible avoid breastfeeding if you are living with HIV. Only when replacement feeding is acceptable, feasible, affordable, sustainable & safe.

Is it ever completely safe to have sex with a HIV-positive person?

There is a sig-

nificantly reduced risk of infection if the person living with HIV has undetectably low levels of virus in their bodily fluids as a result of consistent adherence to treatment. However, avoiding penetrative sex or using condoms remains advisable.

What is the risk of getting HIV through body piercing or from a tattoo?
sterilized, used once, then disposed of or sterilized again.

A risk of

HIV transmission exists if non-sterile instruments are used. Instruments that penetrate the skin should be
