Formation of the United Nations:

The Attempt to Exploit Global Responsibility

Alvin Tsang, Andrew White, Soyoung Jeon, Chris Okamoto, and Abby Olson Senior Division Group Website

While brainstorming for ideas that fit the theme of rights and responsibilities, we landed upon the topic of the United Nations, as our main interests were in reaching global peace, protection of human rights and political diplomacy. Simple research showed that the United Nations has been known to be the worlds pacifist, which therefore gives them the power to maintain the balance of the worlds conflicts and issues. With this power, however, comes the heavy burden of responsibility for the protection of the international community. This responsibility strongly dictates the actions that the United Nations must take in order to protect the human rights of every person living in this world. After a little bit more research, it revealed the many different reasons behind the establishment of the United Nations, along with its past successes and failures and ways that it could improve in the future, and so, our topic was chosen. The first step in creating our history fair project was to conduct an in depth research on our topic. We conducted basic research through browsing the internet and reading reports and articles released about the United Nations and its activities. After acquiring fundamental knowledge on the topic, we began to visit the local libraries and archives to gather primary material that displayed the roles that the United Nations played in the global community. Meanwhile, we continuously engaged with our advisors and teachers in order to receive constructive criticism that would enhance our ideas and better prepare us for the judging of our website. Since most of our group members have done a website for the NHD Contest in the past, we decided to give it another shot. We all felt that we performed the best with technology and web designing. Once we had obtained enough information, we divided the workload and gave out due dates for each person to finish their research. We all individually spent countless hours working to insert our research into the websites, then had frequent meetings to discuss editing different aspects in order to produce our final project.

The United Nations plays a significant role in the international community. Its main job and responsibility is to protect global human rights and reach international peace. With each and every action the United Nations carries out, the burden of the responsibility follows; therefore, we must look at the procedure very thoroughly to ensure that the rights are being protected. The past events that the United Nations has either failed to perform its tasks in or has succeeded to reach its objective in are major factors that contribute the safety of the world. The United Nations has and will forever try its best to continue improving and keep its standing as the worlds pacifist.
