SUMMARY OF AFRICAN SHORTWAVE BROADCASTING

Algeria Radio Algrienne shortwave broadcasts to North Africa and the Sahel via Issoudun, France, continue for the B-13 season between 0400-0600 and 1800-2200. Frequencies have also been registered for two new transmitter sites in Algeria, at Bechar and Ourgla. Angola Radio Nacional de Angola continues to be heard on 4950v kHz with the Canal A programme in Portuguese, but the Radio N'Gola Yetu service in national languages on 7217v kHz is irregularly reported. This service should also include the International Service in French and English at 2000-2200. Voice of America has a dedicated weekly call-in show for listeners in Angola called "Angola, Fala S" It is broadcast on Friday's at 1730-1830 on 13630 and 17655 kHz. Ascension Island The B-13 schedule for the BBC Atlantic Relay Station (operated by Babcock) includes relays of the BBC World Service (to Africa), NHK Radio Japan (to South America), Voice of America (to Africa, including a frequency for the Bambara service to Mali), and FEBA Radio (to Africa). Botswana The schedule for B-13 for the IBB Relay Station comprises of VOA broadcasts to Africa, including the Studio 7 service to Zimbabwe and an evening frequency for Afia Darfur to Sudan. Cameroon Radio Buea, the last remaining CRTV station to be on shortwave, is irregularly reported by listeners in the region on 6005 kHz. If still operational, it is believed to be on a daytime schedule only. Central African Republic In recent years, Radio Centrafrique has been heard on 7220 kHz during daytime hours only. A new 1 kW shortwave transmitter was installed in May 2010 to operate on 5035 kHz, but there have been no recent reports of either frequency. The status of Radio ICDI's 1 kW shortwave transmitter in Boali had been unconfirmed following the takeover of Bangui and other main towns by Selaka rebels in March 2013, but the station's owners say that they are back on air between 0530-1600 on 6030 kHz. In response to the troubles in the Central African Republic, Radio Ndeke Luka introduced a half-hour broadcast at 1700-1730 in French on 3 February 2014 via a Babcock transmitter at Dhabbaya in the UAE on 17500 kHz. A previous relay via a transmitter in the UK had been in operation between 2003-2005. Chad Radiodiffusion Nationale Tchadienne had been regularly heard on 6165 kHz until October 2013, sometimes being on air throughout the night, but has not been reported since then. Democratic Republic of Congo Radio Tele Candip in Bunia is reported on 5066.3 kHz, but the other radio station in eastern Congo, Radio Kahuzi in Bukavu on 6210v kHz, has not been heard recently. Republic of Congo Radio Congo continues to be reported on 6115 kHz, scheduled from 0600 but mostly heard from around 1700 on 6115 kHz, presumably airing the main evening news programme for listeners throughout the Congo at this time, abruptly signing-off at various times from 1815v-1845v. Djibouti Radio Djibouti is regularly reported on 4780 kHz. Egypt Egyptian Radio continues to use shortwave for B-13 with relays of the domestic General Programme and the Voice of the Arabs. Radio Cairo has an extensive external service on shortwave. Equatorial Guinea The shortwave transmitters of Radio Bata on 5005 kHz and Radio Africa on 15190 kHz were seemingly repaired again recently, with improved reception of both being heard. However, Radio Malabo on 6250 kHz is rarely reported. The status of Radio Africa on 15190 kHz may change shortly, as the station's owners Pan-American Broadcasting have begun to hire airtime on WRMI's newly acquired shortwave transmitters at Okeechobee in Florida (ex-Family Radio transmitter site) 2

Eritrea Voice of the Broad Masses of Eritrea (Dimtsi Hafash) currently operates its Programme 1 service on 7205 kHz and Programme 2 on 7175 kHz; transmitters may switch to adjacent frequencies at times to avoid Ethiopian jamming. Several Eritrean opposition groups continue to broadcast on shortwave. Ethiopia The External Service of Radio Ethiopia is currently using 7235v and 9565v kHz, including English at 1600-1700 and French at 1700-1800. These frequencies also carry programmes on behalf of Eritrean opposition groups at certain times. The National Service has not been heard since late 2012 when it was on 9705 kHz. Other Ethiopian shortwave broadcasts can be heard from Voice of the Tigray Revolution on 5950 kHz, Radio Oromiya on 6030 kHz, Amhara State Regional Radio on 6090 kHz, and Radio Fana on 6110 kHz. Several Ethiopian opposition groups continue to broadcast on shortwave, with Oromo Voice Radio the latest to take to the air on 4 January 2014. Gabon Africa No 1 in Moyabi on 9580 kHz was last heard in early 2013 but is now inactive. This is was last remaining shortwave transmitter on the air from Moyabi. Guinea RTG on 7125 kHz has not been reported for a while now, although in the past it has suddenly reappeared after a lengthy period of silence. Liberia Radio ELWA made a welcome return to shortwave in late December 2013. It was heard by Dave Valko in Pennsylvania on 21 December, who reported: 4760 ELWA - Surprised to find a signal here with man preaching with the mic positioned in the back of the room at 0704 tune-in. At 0705 preaching ended and the studio male came on in Afro-accented English and mentioned "beautiful celebration", and then at 0708:40 was shocked to hear ELWA IDs clearly and somewhat slowly! Then went into Hi-life music. 0714 man returned with more mentions of "celebrate" and "celebration", "broadcast". 0718 into choral singing with male talk voice-over saying "hallelujah", and male host came on at 0721. 0726-0731 "Oh Holy Night" by woman. 0732:05 ID. Mention of Liberia during talk by man at 0741. Was gradually and slowly fading but really took a nosedive between 0741-0751. Was still barely able to hear Afro singing at 0752. Very surprised and glad to see them back. e-QSL already received from Moses Nyantee who says they are testing 5:30-10:00 AM and 5:00-10:00 PM Liberia time. Will start regular broadcasts on 1 January 2014. Libya Radio-Television Libya has not been heard on 11600 kHz during the late afternoon/evening period for a while now. It had previously been heard with its Arabic service here. Madagascar Radio Madagasikara is reported on 6135 kHz, and sometimes on 5015 kHz The schedule for B-13 for the Madagascar Relay Station includes relays from AWR (for Madagascar and SE Asia), BBC (for the Horn of Africa), NHK Radio Japan (for Africa and South Asia), Vatican Radio (for Africa and SE Asia), Deutsche Welle (for West Africa), Radio Dialogue (for Zimbabwe), Radio Tamazuj/Radio Dabanga (for Sudan), Radio Impala (for Rwanda), Vatican Radio (for East Africa), Bible Voice (for East Asia), and Voice of Tibet (for East Asia). World Christian Broadcasting is still some way off starting regular broadcasts on shortwave from its new transmitter site in Madagascar, with progress seemingly being held up by red tape. Mali Radiodiffusion-Television Malienne is reported on 5995 kHz (mornings/evenings) and 9635 kHz (daytime), operating with only one shortwave transmitter nowadays. China Radio International continues to broadcast to Africa from its relay station near Bamako. Voice of America introduced a new broadcast in Bambara on 4 March 2013 in response to the situation in Mali, where French and African forces have been fighting Islamist militants. "Mali Kura" ("New Mali") can be heard Monday-Friday at 2130-2200 on 7325, 9620, 13670 and 15255.

Mauritania Radio Mauritania's shortwave transmitter, last heard on 7245 kHz, has not been reported since October 2012. Morocco The only remaining shortwave service from Morocco is from Medi 1 on 9575 kHz. This had been absent for several months but returned in early December 2013. Niger La Voix du Sahel is irregular on 9705 kHz. Nigeria Radio Nigeria, Kaduna continues to be heard on 6090v kHz and is the only Nigerian domestic station regularly heard on shortwave. The National Station in Abuja on 7275 kHz is irregular. Voice of Nigeria is heard between 0500-2300 via the old transmitter at Ikorodu on 15120, 9690 and 7255 kHz, whilst the new transmitter site at Abuja is heard with DRM transmissions in English between 18302000. Additional transmissions from Abuja are also reported at 0800-0900 and 2000-2130 in Hausa. Hamada Radio International is a commercial service broadcasting to Nigeria that originally started on 6 December 2010. It was heard again in December 2013 at 0530-0630 Mon-Fri on 7350 kHz. Rwanda Radio Rwanda is regularly heard on 6055 kHz. The schedule for B-13 from the Deutsche Welle Relay Station includes Deutsche Welle itself, BBC World Service, TWR, and FEBA Radio. Radio Inyabutatu is a target broadcasts which made its inaugural broadcast to Rwanda on 31 August 2013 and is heard on Saturdays at 1600-1700 on 17870 kHz (now via Issoudun, France). Radio Impala is another target broadcaster to Rwanda which was first reported in the WRTH B-13 update published on 5 February 2014. It is scheduled 1700-1800 on 17540 kHz (via Madagascar) in Kinyarwanda and is seemingly the same station previously reported (incorrectly?) as Radio Mara, which had started shortwave broadcasts on 19 November 2013. Sao Tome The B-13 schedule for the IBB Relay Station comprises of Voice of America broadcasts to Africa, including Studio 7 to Zimbabwe and Afia Darfur to Sudan. Seychelles The B-13 schedule for the BBC Indian Ocean Relay Station continues for BBC World Service transmissions to East Africa and the Horn of Africa. However, the BBC has announced that the site at Grand Anse, Mah, will cease all shortwave transmissions on 29 March 2014. The site was established in 1988 and has been in continuous service since then, relaying BBC broadcasts to audiences in East Africa primarily in English and Somali. In areas of East Africa still dependent on shortwave broadcasts, the signal will be supplied by other relay stations. Somalia It had been reported that a new radio station called Radio Puntland was to commence full time operations in June 2013 on 6140 and 13800 kHz with 25 kW, but little has been heard in recent months. Puntland is a self-declared autonomous state in northeast Somalia but unlike neighbouring Somaliland it does not seek outright independence from Somalia. A target broadcast continues for Somalia from Radio Ergo at 0830-0930 on 17680 kHz. Somaliland Radio Hargeisa is regularly heard on 7120 kHz. The schedule is believed to be 0330-0500, irregularly at 0500-0630 and 1230-1400, and then again at 1500-1900. South Africa Radio Sonder Grense broadcasts throughout the day on shortwave in Afrikaans to the Northern Cape on 3320, 7285 and 9650 kHz. Channel Africa, the external service of the SABC, broadcasts a weekday only service to Africa in several languages on single-frequencies between 0300-1800. The South African Radio League has two broadcasts via Meyerton for Southern Africa at 0800-0900 on Sundays at 0800-0900 on 7205 and 17660 kHz, and 1630-1730 on Mondays on 4895 kHz. 4

The B-13 schedule for the Meyerton Relay Station comprises of relays of AWR, BBC, Deutsche Welle, IBRA Radio, NHK Radio Japan, Radio France International, SW Radio Africa (for Zimbabwe), and the Voice of America. Sudan Sudan Radio is scheduled with its General Programme in Arabic on 7200 kHz at 0215-0430, 1430-1530, and 1930-2100, whilst the same transmitter is on 9505 kHz for the Voice of Africa external service in Tigrinya, Amharic, Swahili and English between 0600-0900, and in French, English and Hausa between 1630-1930. There are two target broadcasts to the troubled Darfur region of western Sudan that can be heard on shortwave. Radio Afia Darfur at 0300-0330 on 5885, 7275 and 9845 kHz, 1800-1830 on 9645, 11615 and 13715, and 1900-1930 on 9780, 9815 and 12080, and Radio Dabanga at 0430-0600 on 7315, 11940 and 15550 kHz, and 1530-1630 on 13800 and 15530 kHz. Radio Tamazuj has a special programme for people in the conflict area between North and South Sudan, and is heard at 0400-0430 on 7315, 11940 and 15550 kHz, and 1500-1530 on 13800 and 15530 kHz. South Sudan VOA's "South Sudan in Focus", reflecting US interest in the region, is aired Monday-Friday at 1630-1700 on 11790, 11905 and 12080 kHz. Miraya FM broadcasts on shortwave to South Sudan and the neighbouring regions in Arabic, with some English and Sudanese languages, at 0300-0600 on 11560 kHz. Swaziland TWR Swaziland continues to be heard with an extensive schedule on shortwave between 0255 and 2020 on several frequencies. Tunisia Radio Tunisienne has not been heard on shortwave since the beginning of 2014. It had previously operated with a reduced service on shortwave in Arabic reported at 0502-0602 on 7275 kHz and 0702-0802 on 7335 kHz. Uganda UBC Radio is heard on 4976 kHz mornings/evenings and 7195 kHz daytime. Dunamis Shortwave, broadcasting Christian programming to Uganda and South Sudan, is scheduled between 1500-1900 on 4750 kHz. It was presumably heard on 4750 kHz from tune in at 1717 until abrupt close at 1752 on 17 October 2013 with a weak signal. Programming was a loop of a continuous African sounding Christian song. May have been a test as station believed to have been inactive for some time. (Observations by Dave Kenny, Alan Pennington on Sheigra DXpedition) West Africa Swatu Linjiila (Radio Voice of the Gospel) is operated by the Lutheran World Federation for Fulani listeners in West Africa. It currently broadcasts at 1830-1900 on 9800 kHz (see under Cameroon). Western Sahara National Radio of the Saharan Arab Democratic Republic, which broadcasts from the Sahrawi refugee camp at Rabouni in Algeria, has not been heard on shortwave since June 2011. However it is heard regularly on mediumwave 1550 kHz. Zambia ZNBC Radio 1 on 5915 kHz is heard regularly between 0245-2205. However, ZNBC 2 on 6165 kHz is currently silent Zanzibar Zanzibar Broadcasting Corporation is scheduled 0300-0600 on 6015 kHz and 1500-2100 on 11735 kHz, with news in English at 1800. Well heard, but does have spells of inactivity on shortwave. Zimbabwe ZBC Radio Zimbabwe is heard on 6045 kHz, whilst the Voice of Zimbabwe service is reported on 4828 kHz (both may be absent on some days, presumably due to the power situation in Zimbabwe). Schedules for both frequencies are unconfirmed but they are heard by Bill Bingham in South Africa during the late afternoon/early evening period. Target broadcasts to Zimbabwe currently consist of Radio Dialogue at 1600-1700 on 12105 kHz and SW Radio Africa at 1700-1900 on 4880 kHz. Voice of America's "Studio 7" is aired Monday-Friday at 17001900 and Weekends at 1700-1800 on 4930, 12080 & 15455 kHz 5

RADIO ALGRIENNE Radio Algrienne is part of Entreprise Nationale de Radiodiffusion Sonore (ENRS). Shortwave transmissions are currently relayed via Issoudun in France for listeners in North Africa and the Sahel. BBC ATLANTIC RELAY STATION The BBC World Service relay station on Ascension Island began operations in 1967 with four 250 kW transmitters. ORTB - RADIO BENIN Radio Benin is the state-operated broadcasting service of ORTB in Benin. It was last reported on shortwave in 2006. ORTB - RADIO PARAKOU Radio Parakou is an ORTB regional station. It has not been heard on shortwave since January 2009.

BOTSWANA
RADIO BOTSWANA Radio Botswana is the state-run broadcasting service for Botswana. It was last heard on shortwave in early 2004. IBB BOTSWANA TRANSMITTING STATION The IBB Botswana Transmitting Station at Moepeng Hill was opened in 1991. It currently airs programmes from the Voice of America, VOA Studio 7 for Zimbabwe, and Afia Darfur for the troubled Darfur region of Sudan. Transmitter Site: Moepeng Hill - 4 x 100 kW. BURKINA FASO
RTB - RADIO BURKINA Radio Burkina is the state-run broadcasting service for Burkina Faso. Radio Burkina has not been heard on shortwave since January 2010.

BURUNDI
RADIO-TELEVISION NATIONALE DU BURUNDI RTNB is the state-run broadcasting service in Burundi. It was last reported on shortwave in 2003.

CAMEROON
RADIO BUEA Radio Buea is the CRTV regional station for Cameroon's South-West Region. If still active, it is believed to be the last remaining CRTV station to operate on shortwave. Transmitter Site: Buea, South-West Province. CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC

RADIO CENTRAFRIQUE - RADIODIFFUSION-TELEVISION CENTRAFRICAINE Radio Centrafrique is the state-operated radio service of the Central African Republic. In recent years, Radio Centrafrique has been heard on 7220 kHz during daytime hours only. A new 1 kW shortwave transmitter was installed in May 2010 to operate on 5035 kHz. However, as of December 2013 there have been no reports of either frequency.

RADIO ICDI Radio ICDI is the radio station belonging to Water for God (formerly known as Integrated Community Development International), a Christian ministry founded by Jim Hocking in 2003. Official broadcasts with a 1 kW shortwave transmitter started on 1 March 2007 on 6030 kHz with Christian programming and community health information. A second 1 kW shortwave transmitter donated by HCJB Global Voice was installed in April 2010 and went live on 1 April 2011 on 3390 kHz. Radio ICDI was put off air in March 2013 when Selaka rebels advanced on Bangui, with their studio and equipment looted. However, in May 2013 the station returned with a limited schedule and is now currently reported to be on air between 05301600 on 6030 kHz only. Transmitter Site: Boali - 2 x 1 kW. It commenced transmissions first on FM in 2000 and then with a shortwave relay in 2003 via a VT Communications transmitter in the UK. The shortwave transmission was cancelled in July 2005. Radio Ndeke Luka continued to broadcast on FM in the Central African Republic and later also had a two-hour daily programme in Sango broadcast over Radio ICDI (see above) between 6-8 pm local time. RTNC in Kinshasa was last reported on shortwave in the late 1990's on 15245v kHz from a 100 kW transmitter. All official RTNC regional stations are also believed to be inactive on shortwave. TARGET BROADCAST TO DR CONGO RADIO OKAPI Radio Okapi is a joint initiative between the UN Mission in the DRC and Fondation Hirondelle. It was established in early 2002 with three 10 kW shortwave transmitters in Kinshasa that were used on 6030, 9550 and 11690 kHz. These were later replaced by shortwave relays from outside the DRC (from Meyerton, South Africa and Dhabbaya, UAE). Radio Okapi is currently aired on a network of FM transmitters around the country, but shortwave broadcasts appear to have been discontinued during the A-13 season.

REPUBLIC OF CONGO
RADIO CONGO Radio Congo is the government-controlled broadcasting service of the Republic of Congo. It was reactivated on shortwave in January 2009, although with a much reduced schedule. Radio Djibouti's current shortwave transmitter was donated by the US government's IBB in early 2005 in exchange for the installation of a 600 kW mediumwave transmitter for use by Radio Sawa. Following its inauguration in 1934, the Egyptian Broadcasting Corporation, as it was then called, developed slowly until the emergance of Colonel Nasser in 1952 when Egyptian radio's coverage and influence rapidly grew throughout the Arab World and North Africa. GABON
RADIODIFFUSION TELEVISION GABONAISE - RADIO GABON RTG is the state-operated broadcasting service in Gabon. It was last reported on shortwave in 2008. AFRICA NO. 1 Africa No 1 is a commercial service for French-speaking Africa operating from studios in Libreville. Prior to the fall of the Gaddafi regime, the Libyan government had been the majority shareholder in the station, although it had reportedly had been suffering from severe financial difficulties during the period prior to and during the Libyan Revolution. It has not been reported on shortwave (9580 kHz) since May 2013. MOYABI TRANSMITTING STATION The Moyabi Transmitting Station was inaugurated in 1979 and over the years hosted relays of Radio France Internationale, Swiss Radio International and Radio Japan, amongst others. At the end of the B-07 season on 29 March 2008, Radio Japan discontinued the last remaining relay via Moyabi by an international broadcasting station, leaving just Africa No 1 as the the sole user of the station at that time.

GAMBIA
GAMBIA RADIO AND TELEVISION SERVICE GRTS is Gambia's public service broadcaster. Radio Gambia was last heard on SW in the mid-1970's.

GHANA
GHANA BROADCASTING CORPORATION GBC is the public broadcasting service in Ghana. It was last reported on shortwave in 2007 by which time it had been reduced to broadcasting the domestic service on just one frequency, following the breakdown of the other transmitter a few years earlier.

GUINEA
RADIO-TLVISION GUINENNE - RADIO CONAKRY Radio-Tlvision Guinenne (RTG) is the state-operated broadcasting service of Guinea. Transmitter Site: Conakry. FAMILIA FM Radio Familia (ex-4900 kHz & FM) ceased operations in February 2011 after a dispute between manager and director. The 1 kW transmitter still is inside the country, but will not be reactivated there. There are plans for shipping it to a neighbouring country, but nothing definite yet. LESOTHO
LESOTHO NATIONAL BROADCASTING SERVICE - RADIO LESOTHO LNBS is the state-run broadcasting service in Lesotho. It was last heard on shortwave in 2005. BBC WORLD SERVICE RELAY STATION BBC World Service relay station in Lesotho was opened in 1979 with two 100 kW shortwave transmitters. It closed on 30th September 1996, with shortwave relays switching to Meyerton in South Africa.

LIBERIA
RADIO ELWA Radio ELWA is a Christian radio station in Monrovia. After having its facilities destroyed in the Liberian civil war, a 1 kW shortwave transmitter built by HCJB Global was later installed in 2000 (for 4760 kHz) and a 5 kW shortwave transmitter built by Elcor in 2008 (for 6070 kHz). In early 2011, both shortwave transmitters were inactive due to the the theft of copper wire for the antenna and other equipment. In November 2011 it was reported that the Radio ELWA studio compound in Monrovia had been completely destroyed by fire, although they remained on air on FM from a temporary building. On 21 December 2013, Radio ELWA resumed shortwave transmissions with the station back on 4760 kHz. LIBYA
RADIO TELEVISION LIBYA - RADIO LIBYA Radio-Television Libya was first heard in October 2011 with a service in French on 11600 kHz and was the replacement for the Gaddafi-era Voice of Africa external service. In September 2012, French programming was replaced by an Arabic service between 1500v-2000v. The transmitter currently appears to be inactive.

WORLD CHRISTIAN BROADCASTING - MADAGASCAR WORLD VOICE In November 2004 World Christian Broadcasting obtained 85 acres of land in Madagascar for a new transmitter site. Since then the project to get Madagascar World Voice, as the station will be known, has been making slow progress towards its goal of broadcasting Gospel programming to the Middle East, Africa, South America, China, Russia, India, Indonesia and Europe. As of early November 2013, World Christian Broadcasting were hoping that the elections in Madagacar would result in a new president who would appoint a Minister of Communcations that would approve the sending of the three shortwave transmitters intended for the new site on the island.

The site was established in 1988 and has been in continuous service since then, relaying BBC broadcasts to audiences in East Africa primarily in English and Somali. In areas of East Africa still dependent on shortwave broadcasts, the signal will be supplied by other relay stations. The announcement follows an earlier decision to stop all shortwave broadcasts from the BBC WS site in Cyprus for similar commercial, technological and audience reach reasons. These ended in March 2013. (BBC press release 22 November 2013) FEBA RADIO FEBA Radio began broadcasting from the Seychelles in the early 1970's with programmes beamed to South Asia, the Middle East, and East Africa. These ended in March 2003 and FEBA Radio now has a contract agreement with Babcock to air its programmes via transmitters in various countries.

SIERRA LEONE
SIERRA LEONE BROADCASTING CORPORATION The Sierra Leone Broadcasting Corporation was established in 2009, replacing the previous state-owned broadcasting service, the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Service. SLBS was last heard in 2002 on 3316 kHz.

SOMALIA
SOMALI BROADCASTING SERVICE - RADIO MOGADISHU Somali Broadcasting Service - Radio Mogadishu, representing the last fully functioning government in Somalia, was last reported on shortwave in August 1991. Since then there have been several shortwave radio stations in Somalia broadcasting in support of various clans and factions, peacekeeping operations, and more recently, the Transitional Federal Government. The last shortwave stations heard from Somalia, with the exception of Radio Hage in Puntland (see below), were Radio Shabelle in Mogadishu and Radio Baay in Baidoa which were last reported in July 2006 and April 2007 respectively. PUNTLAND RADIO PUNTLAND Radio Puntland was due to commence full time operations from Garowe in June 2013 on 6140 and 13800 kHz with 25 kW. As of April 2013 they were conducting low power tests according to Italian technicians who were in the town, but current status of the station is subject to confirmation.

SOMALILAND
RADIO HARGEISA Radio Hargeisa is the national broadcasting station of the Republic of Somaliland. It was established in 1948, but in 1988 was destroyed by forces of Siyad Bare. In the years that followed it reportedly operated on various low-powered transmitters until a new shortwave unit was installed in 2008, with regular transmissions commencing in March 2009 on 7145 kHz. However, by late 2009 it was no longer heard. After an absence of nearly three years, a new Chinese-built shortwave transmitter was inaugurated on 27 August 2012 for coverage throughout Somaliland, the Horn of Africa and surrounding area. RADIO TAMAZUJ Radio Tamazuj is an initiative of Free Press Unlimited and produces a special programme for people in the conflict areas between North and South Sudan, such as Abyei, Blue Nile and South Kordofan. Tamazuj means "across the border". Since November 2011 they have produced half-hour per week within the Radio Dabanga time slot, which from 5 January 2012 became a separate programme under the name of Radio Tamazuj at 0400-0430 before the existing Radio Dabanga transmissions begin. WESTERN SAHARA
NATIONAL RADIO OF THE SAHARAN ARAB DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC Operated by the Polisario Front in support of independence for Western Sahara. National Radio of the Saharan Arab Democratic Republic began shortwave transmissions in 1993. The shortwave transmitter is located in Rabouni, near the south-western Algerian town of Tindouf, near to the border with Western Sahara. Shortwave transmissions were last heard on 6297 kHz but have not been reported since June 2011, presumably due to a transmitter problem. The station continues to be heard on MW 1550 kHz.
