The facts speak for themselves: Tokyo has more award-winning restaurants than any other city. 17 of them have three Michelin stars: a city record (Paris has 10). Whether upscale or street-side: the emphasis here is on good, premiumquality cuisine. The megametropolis offers far more choices in food and drink than most other cities in the world, often endearingly simple and affordable ones as well. Noodle soups of all varieties with soba, yakisoba, udon, or ramen pasta can be savoured at every street corner. And when it comes to drinks, Japan is denitely no longer an also-ran. Until recently, for instance, Japanese whiskies were niche products today, they rank among the most coveted. Beer is becoming more popular, too: with its countless micro breweries, Tokyo offers connoisseurs an eclectic selection of artisanal beers.

With his eatery, native New Yorker Eliot Bergman brought a chunk of Big Apple dining panache to Tokyo. The burgers served here are the pure opposite of fast food from the ketchup to the bread, everything is made on the premises. Rumour has it that the best burgers in Tokyo are served here; that may well be true. At any rate, its another reason to pay a visit to the Kagurazaka district with its French aura.

The Marunouchi business district was totally revamped during the last decade. Boring ofce buildings were replaced with a vibrant ensemble of shops, cafs, and restaurants. So Tired is one of them. This laid-back venue with a magnicent terrace offers outstanding Japanese/Chinese fusion fare in a sacral ambience dominated by colourful mosaic windows.

Was entsteht, wenn Shunji Mori, gelegentlicher DJ und Bandmitglied von Natural Calamity, ein Restaurant erffnet? Das vermutlich entspannteste vegetarische Lokal Tokios. Fr die sorgfltig zusammengestellten Gerichte werden nur die gesundesten Zutaten verwendet. Ausserdem gibt es eine grosse Auswahl an Bagels und Sandwiches. Wer ein Buch lesen oder im neusten Tokioter Stylemagazin blttern und dazu eine Soja-Latte trinken mchte, ist hier an der richtigen Stelle.

Founded over 200 years ago, this is one of Tokyos oldest guest houses. Loaches (dojo) are served in countless variations in a trad itional ambience: as nabe (in a hot pot), yanagawa (omelette), or kabayaki (grilled). The delicacy from the Edo period is enjoyed seated; the pots are presented on a bed of glowing coal. Undoubtedly an experience with a high word-of-mouth factor.

Its a perfect venue for taking a shopping break and observing the hip-chic Harajuku crowd or the fashion photographers. The furnishings are reminiscent of the lounge in a secret 1970s espionage bureau.

Having nally arrived on the forever-crowded dance oor, guests forget to bop, awestruck by the laser show and the gigantic disco ball. Those familiar with the movie Babel will remember the ecstatic club scene in Tokyo it was shot in the Womb.

Auch wer sich nicht fr die avantgardistische Mode des Belgiers Martin Margiela begeistert, wird hier in Staunen versetzt: Das Geschft in Ebisu war der weltweit erste Margiela-Store berhaupt und hat in einer alten, verwinkelten Industriehalle eines ehemaligen Elektronikkonzerns seinen optimalen Showroom gefunden. In den von Weiss dominierten Rumlichkeiten hat jede Kollektion ihr eigenes Zimmer, betreten wird der Modetempel durch den alten Lieferanteneingang.

This tachinomi (standingroom-only bars that emerged due to the recession) was one of the rst of its kind in Tokyo and seems to still be the best and most popular of the genre. The well-dressed, dapper patrons come here mainly because of the excellent wine list and the broad selection of eats which extends from oysters and sashimi to terrines and steaks.

It doesnt get more crowded: the bars in the traditional Golden Gai district are so tiny that they will burst at the seams with just ve guests. That heightens the excitement. Onsen (hot baths) are deeply rooted in Japanese culture and should not be missed. Oedo Onsen, a sprawling hot spring complex built in the Edo architectural style, is a memorable experience. In yukatas (a kimono bathrobe variant) bathers stroll through the spa landscape, drink tea, and dine in one of the many restaurants. The ride on Tokyos monorail to this oasis is rewarded with a spectacular, atypical view of the city.

The food here tastes worse than in the supermarket around the corner, but in return, the mind-boggling show is beyond the Westerners imagination: in an all-neon-lit arena ooded with loud Japanese club music, combat robots controlled by nubile bikini-clad females ght against dinosaurs. A piece of hedonistic Tokyo as if borrowed from a movie.

Das Tempura-Restaurant Tsunahachi ist mein Favorit. Im Ambiente der 80er-Jahre sitzt man mit etwas Glck direkt vor seinem Koch und lsst sich eines der drei Set-Mens servieren. Fisch, Gemse und Pilze werden zur Perfektion im Teigmantel frittiert und in eine spezielle Sauce getaucht. Authentischer kann man die japanische Tempura-Tradition nicht erleben. The Tsunahachi tempura restaurant is my favourite. With a bit of luck, youll be sitting directly in front of your chef in this 1980s-style venue, and the best choice is one of the three set menus. Fish, vegetables, and mushrooms are fried to perfection in the batter, then dipped in a special sauce. There isnt a more authentic way to experience the Japanese tempura tradition.
