Mental Calculations at Numerical Reasoning Tests

Numerical Reasoning tests test your numerical reasoning abilities; that is how well your mental processes allow you to manipulate data of numerical nature. Often these tests comprise questions where you need to employ your mental arithmetic skills to process large amount of data quickly and accurately. Below you can find some hints and tips as how you should swift through large amount of data presented in tables, charts or graphs to complete questions at numerical reasoning tests in shortest time possible.

Mental Calculation & Estimation

The below questions 1 and 2 test your abilities to process large amount of data quickly and accurately. For example, the question 1 requires you to conclude which project had the highest percentage profit. To quickly tackle this question, follow three simple steps. Glance at the table and inspect all data provided Mentally calculate and rule out projects that would have the lowest/highest percentage profit On calculator calculate projects with highest percentage profits and make conclusion Table 1

Question 1 Which project had the highest percentage profit?

By thorough inspection we can conclude that Project B, C and E would have the lowest percentage profit compared to Project A and Project D. To find out you need to look for projects with lowest proportional operational costs to revenue. Starting with Project A; you can easily see that percentage revenue is 70% that is 21/30; whereas revenues of Project B, C and E would be lower: Project B 11/25 approximately 10/25 = 40% so 11/25 would have to be slightly above 40% Project C 15.5 / 31 = 50% Project E 8/20 = 40% The revenue of project D is 60% (3/5) and hence you may conclude that Project A must be the correct answer. Remember, you need make as many calculations as possible in your head and to calculate only data with slight deviation with your calculator. Table 1

Question 2 Which project had the lowest revenue to costs ratio? By quick comparison and mental estimation of total revenue and total costs of all projects you can quickly conclude that Project B and E must have lower ratio than project A, C and D. That is: Project A 30/9 equals approximately to 3.3

Project B 25/14 equals approximately to 1.8

Project B 25/14 equals approximately to 1.8 Project C 31/15.5 equals to 2 Project D 5/2 equals to 2.5 Project E 20/12 equals approximately to 1.7 Hence for your calculations you can rule out project A, C and D and save time by not imputing data into your calculator. To get the correct answer use your calculator only to calculate ratio of Projects B and Project E as the revenue to cost ratio of these are lowest and most similar.
