Question 1 How many more employees have to b e on team that will work on project A if the company wants to finish project within 72 days? The above seemingly tricky question that may appear in numerical reasoning test can be easily worked out. Remember, to succeed at numerical reasoning tests you need to manipulate basic arithmetic operations inside out. All what is required here is to perform two simple arithmetic calculations: 72 / 18 x 95 = 23.75 approximately 24, so we now know that if the company wants to finish project within 72 days they need 24 employees. Now simply subtract 24 18 = 6 to get the number of employees that need to join the team that work on project A. Remember, in the above example we are using indirect relationship rather than direct one which means that you will cross multiply indirectly. Now consider the table 2 and question 2 below. Table 2
Question 2 If the company transferred 8 employees from project A to project B then approximately in how many less days would the project B b e finished? For people that do not have an extensive experience with numerical reasoning tests the above question may seem to be impossible to work out under time constraints of numerical reasoning tests. However, it follows the exact logic as the question 1 above and can be simply worked out. That is, if the company transferred 8 employees from project A to project B then on project B would be 33 employees. Now, cross multiply in the way of indirect relationship that is 15 x 210 / 33 = 95.45 approximately 96 days and subtract 210 96 = 114 days. Now, the question may arise how can I know how to cross multiply when working out indirect relationship between certain values? Well, the answer is simple and sketched in the below diagram. With reference to the above questions write your cross multiplication in the way that through your head will go the following if 15 employees can do it in 210 days (write 15/210) then 33 employees can do it in X days (write 33/X). Then simply cross multiply; and as this is the indirect relationship where one value increases proportionally as the other decreases you cross multiply indirectly. That is, 210 x 15 / 96 as demonstrated in the table above!
