Virtual Lab 2

Objectives: 1: Define four types of water pollution 2: Describe how pollution results in decreased dissolved oxygen (DO) levels, and explain the effect low DO levels can have on an ecosystem 3: Describe how other factors, like temperature, can affect DO levels 4: Describe what aquatic life are most and least suited to polluted environments Temperature DO (Farenheit) (ppm) Spring / site # 1 Summer/ site # 1 Autumn/ site # 1 Winter/ site # 1 Spring / site # 2 Summer/ site # 2 Autumn/ site # 2 Winter/ site #2 Spring / site # 3 Summer/ site #3 Autumn/ site # 3 Winter/ site # 3 46 66 52 45 45 68 52 36 45 Percent Invertabrates Fish saturation value carp none none Carp, gar Trout trout Trout carp Trout Carp, gar, cat fish none Catfish, carp trout Bacteria

Fish Carp tolerant to low of oxygen, live mud-buttomed lakes, ponds, and river Catfish- tough fish- survive low oxygen, high CO2, acidity, and pollutant levels Gar swim bladder of gar is abundantly supplied with blood vessels = extra extra breathing organ => survive period of time with low or even absent oxygen

Trout well- oxyganatd water Microoraganisms Oscillatoria - such as high temperature and heavy pollution Paramecia tolerant with low oxygen levels Spirogyras - stagnant ponds, lakes, and other standing pools of water Stentors - best in stagnant waters with moderate to high bacteria levels Bacteria they also use up the DO in the water Euglenas - common in many freshwater environments and can tolerate moderate levels of pollution. Invertebrates Midge larvae - live in almost any type of water Mosquito larvae - prefer polluted water with low oxygen levels Stoneflies - well-oxygenated water freshwater worms - highly polluted waters. Caddis fly larvae prefer clean, well-oxygenated water Rat-tailed maggots - prefer polluted water with low oxygen levels and feed on decaying organic debris Mayfly nymphs - measure of pollution, since the species is very sensitive to lack of oxygen and high levels of acidity live for a period of only a few hours to a few days

Journal Questions: 1: What are four types of water pollution? Define each. Thermal pollution, when factories use water to cool machines and the water directly goes to surrounding water. Can lead environmental imbalances. Industrial or chemical pollution discharge of chemicals in the water Domestic pollution town water going directly to the body of water Soil Pollution - erosion cause soil to flow body of water 2: Which fish species are the least tolerant of water pollution? Which species are the most tolerant? How do you arrive at your conclusion? Carp because it can live in worst living location. Least tolerant is the trout because in the fact sheet it said that it like oxygenated water. If there were trouts that means the water isnt that much contaminated. 3: Which invertebrates are the least tolerant of water pollution? Which species are the most tolerant? How do you arrive at your conclusion? Most tolerant rat-tailed maggots because they prefer polluted water and eat on decaying organisms, and the midgae larvae because they can live to any type of water. Least tolerant caddis fly and stoneflies because the like well oxygenated water. 4: What might a high level of bacteria indicate about DO levels? What is the relationship between bacteria and water pollution?

High levels of bacteria mean low DO levels. The relationship is that bacteria also uses oxygen to decompose materials. 5: Based on the lab results, what conclusion can be drawn about each site? Which river was the most polluted? How did you arrive at your conclusion? River 1 because there was any living organisms there. Other than spring and winter there was any fishes. IF you compare the temperature river 1 spring and winter theyre relatively close while the other river is 10 degrees of. There was probably some sort of pollution or more pollution in river 1.
