Lorenza Somera's Case Lorenza Somera is once a head nurse who was condemned in May 1929 in Manila to one

year imprisonment in connection with the death of a young girl in the operating room. She was accused of homicide through reckless imprudence. his! Somera"s case! is the most discussed in #hilippine nursing history in relation to following doctor"s order. $elow are the case facts in condensed from which was pu%lished in 19&' from the (nternational )ursing *e+iew and it is read as follows, Se+eral days prior to May 2-! 1929! #edro Clemente took his daughter! .nastacia Clemente! to /r. 0regorio 1a+is at Manila. he latter decided to perform a tonsillectomy and instructed the father and daughter to go to St. #aul"s 2ospital where he would perform the operation at 3am on May 2-! 1929. .ssisting Lorenza Somera! a 2ead )urse! were student nurses 4alentina .ndaya and Consolacion Montinola. he assistant surgeon was /r. $artolome. /uring the operation! /r. 1a+is asked /r. $artholome for )o+ocain solution. Ms. Montinola handed /r. $artolome a syringe of solution which was handed in turn to /r. 1a+is who in5ected the same to the patient ..fter a few minutes! /r. $artolome noticed that the patient was %ecoming pale and acting as if dying. 2e called the attention of /r. 1a+is to this %ut the latter said it was not unusual. . third syringe of solution was in5ected and a few minutes later! the patient died in a few minutes. /r. 1a+is asked if the )o+ocain was fresh. Ms. Somera replied that the solution was not )o+ocain %ut 1'6 cocaine. (n court! Ms. Montinola testified she heard /r. 1a+is order cocaine with adrenalin for in5ection and heard Ms. Somera to ha+e +erified the order. he autopsy report and testimony of the Medico7legal 8fficer showed that the patient was suffering from status lymphaticus and that such patients were known to die e+en with so slight an in5ury as a needle7prick. 1acts not %rought in the trial were 19 that Ms. Somera. 2ad finished her training only on May 2'! 1929: 29 that she had not recei+ed her registration certificate and was not an e;perienced graduate as states in the prosecution: &9 that /r. 1a+is had performed tonsillectomy %ut once pre+iously in St. #aul"s and that no order from /r. 1a+is was gi+en %efore his arri+al. he two accused doctors were a%sol+ed of the crime %ut Lorenza Somera was condemned to suffer one year and one day imprisonment and to indemnify the heirs of .nastacia Clemente the sum of #1!
