Title of Article: Teachers Must Have Courage, Selflessness Writer: ROMEO J.

YARCIA (Bontal Pilot School, Bayombong Nueva Vizcaya) Place/Year of Publication: Manila, Philippines/July 2006 Area: Teachers Personal Qualities Only the brave should teach. Thus said Pearl S. Buck, the novelist. For the Public School Teachers job asks so much, pays so little and earns the least respect according to Onofre Pagsanghan, an Ateneo Professor. This is how the article started. Straight to the point and uses a simple words for us to understand. I learnt on this article that teachers are the most important component of the school system because they hold in their hands the future of the school children. The idea is simple, but its implications are not. It will take time to unfold what I do and do not mean by those words. But here is one way to apply it: in every class I teach, my ability to associate with my students, and to connect them with the subject depends less on the approaches I used than on the degree to which I know and trust myself and I am willing to make it available and comprehensible in the service of learning- -thats how I understand the meaning of being selfless and having a courage to test yourself for the sake of your students. Theres also a part on the article that Torralba said that teachers could not teach unless they could do what they said. As the Biblical adage goes; There is no better teaching to compare with the power of example. As a future educator, it thrilled me to the bone that this profession is not as an easy as sitting in front of your class because from the start of the school year when you stand in front of your class that would be the initiation that your foot was 50 feet underground. A teacher must have confidence of her convictions, yet know when to bend if necessary. A teacher must create a program that will encourage his students to learn how to learn, and then know when to leave the rest to them. Unfortunately, there is no rapid remedy for lack of courage, but there is something that all teachers can do to nudge students an inch closer toward their dream self: teachers can encourage. Words of support always affect others. After all, peoples lives can be changed by a single utterance. So say it like you mean it: I believe in you. And this article ended by a sweet reminder; BE PROUD YOU ARE A TEACHER. THE FUTURE DEPENDS ON YOU.

Title of Article: Choosing to Teach (A Lifetime Vocation.. A Lifetime Response) Area: Teachers Vocation Oh People never ever underestimate teachers. These are the thoughts that keep playing in my mind as I go through this piece of reading materials. Along the way I learned that Teaching is a vocation of lifetime experience, an experience of ceaseless growth, innovations, lessons, success and failures. And doubtful question, Fatima, Why teacher and what will you get out of teaching? was answered in every word that author said. Growing up in a Family of an Educator is a pressured one. My Mom, My Aunties, and my Cousins are all in the field. They said it runs in our blood. So when I got my diploma in high school year the first question was, What course should I take in college? while trying to break the history of the family. Just like what I got from this reading material teaching is the professions with the most sterling nobility. Everybody can be a teacher but no one can be an effective teacher except when he puts his life on it. Low Pay, Low Prestige, Too much Paperwork, Too many concerns, too many hardheads only a dedicated one can survive these. And using a simply word (Hats off to the author for that), I learned that teaching was still the most rewarding and best career. The teacher is the first one, who teaches us how to love, allows us to make mistakes but makes sure that we learn from it, and let us to discover our strength and weaknesses by means of challenging us. I also learned the five things that makes a good teacher; He teaches students, not subjects, He plays time well, constantly, He toughens his students, He teaches ideals, not loyalties and He teaches so that students learn and serve. I learned that teacher must motivate students to love learning for learnings sake, but ultimately, to prepare themselves well to render many years of service to fellowmen in their chosen profession. I also realized that teaching leads to the great reward. The reward in teaching is almost always not immediate. While sometimes the teacher enjoys tremendous delight in helping a student or an entire class understand competently what is being taught, the greater delight is in seeing a former student do well in his chosen field, a greatly wiser and virtuous man. This is the teachers finest moment and he experiences hundreds of these moments in his lifetime. And as a Future Educator, this material would serve as my guiding book and as well as my reminder that I got a lifetime vocation not a lifetime job.

Title of Article: Joys, Hard Work, Bitterness of a Teacher Writer: JOSEPHINE TANAY (Salvacion Elementary School Ragay, Camarines Sur) Place/Year of Publication: Manila, Philippines/July 2006 Area: Teachers Life Many educators never dream of becoming teachers. Very few mentors choose teaching as their career. This introduction catch my attention the most. I remember when I was enrolling in PNU, the interviewer asked me why I choose PNU and he laughed at me when I answered My mom asked me to take education course but I explicated that I fell in love with the teaching profession as I grew up. Just like in this article, the author, Maam Josephine, stated the reason why she chose to teach despite of all the hard works it brings. I learned in this article that teachers get incredible joy in seeing the difference they make as students gain new insights, become more interested in a subject and learn about themselves. Every day, teachers create the future through impacting their students views and understandings. Teachers foster creativity, develop character, give students lenses with which to view the world and provide students with the skills they need to reach their potential and lead productive lives. Many individuals are attracted to teaching by a sense of service, because they want to make a clear, tangible difference in the lives of others. As a teacher, you see the fruits of your efforts everyday as you use your intelligence and creativity to help students become excited about and learn about the science in their lives. Realizing that theres a great sacrifice that you need to do when you choose to teach as stated in this article, there are also instances of poor health among educators. Some endure asthma, tuberculosis, heart ailment, goitre and even mental illness. Others do not reach retirement period. But this does not hinder a great teacher to perform her job well because teaching from the start is her true love. Even though I succeeded in reaching the high standards I set for myself during my student teaching, there are areas that I need to improve upon. One of these areas is becoming a stronger pedagogical expert. I also realized while reading this article that, for every student you encounter, you will learn something from them. Whether it be a new teaching strategy or a life lesson, you never stop learning.

Title of Article: The need to Strengthen Moral Values Writer: PEDRO R. BARTOLAY, JR. Tutuban Elementary School San Jacinto District Place/Year of Publication: Manila, Philippines/July 2006 Area: Classroom Management and Discipline

Is that your teacher has taught you? This is a very humiliating question that we often hear whenever a school child commits mistakes. As if the teacher is solely responsible for all the errors, blunders, shortcomings and wrong actions perpetrated by a pupil. While reading this article theres a question playing on my mind. Why is it when most people talk about a school curriculum, they think about math, science, social studies, and language courses. Seldom do I hear or read about moral values as being part of the curriculum? The problem is that the neglect of teaching moral values in schools is aching our students and causing problems in society. If a person has never learned any moral values, how is she or he able to discern the difference between right and wrong? That is basically the essence of moral values education. The fruit of education is sometimes upsetting; as Alexander Pope had said, Little learning is a dangerous thing. I learned in this article that teacher must be careful in teaching young minds because nowadays what we learned in school became disparaging as we go out to the society, instead of teaching the ignorant are misled by the intelligent individuals, instead of giving life, unborn babies are aborted by expert physicians, instead of serving the people; voters are fooled by talented people in uniform these are the sad things that we are facing right now. Good education is nothing without strong moral values.

Title of Article: The teacher as a Change Agent towards the Twenty-first Century Writer: Lily Rosqueta-Rosales, Ed. D(Dean, College of Education, UP Diliman) Place/Year of Publication: Manila, Philippines/July 2006 Area: Innovation and Instructional Change

As a future technology educator this article catches my most being while realizing that many countries have seen rapidly rising numbers of people with higher qualifications. But in a fast-changing world, making more of the same training will not be sufficient to address the challenges of the future. Perhaps the most challenging problem for teachers today is that routine cognitive skills, the skills that are easiest to teach and easiest to test, are also the skills that are easiest to digitize, automate and outsource. And being a computer teacher I must say that skills are one of the biggest factor in our grading system. A generation ago, teachers could assume that what they taught would last for a lifetime of their students. Today, where students can access content on Google, where routine cognitive skills are being digitized or outsourced, and where jobs are changing rapidly, education systems need to place much greater emphasis on enabling individuals to become lifelong learners, to manage complex ways of thinking and complex ways of working that computers cannot take over easily. Students need to be capable not only of constantly adapting but also of constantly learning and growing, of positioning themselves and repositioning themselves in a fast changing world. This article was an eye opener for me that as a future innovator I have on my hand the responsibilities to be humanists within the context of education and have a commitment to human values and provisions for exposure to practicum courses. I must learn how to redefine and expand my instructional strategies. New educational reforms and new directions. Here are some reminders Ive got in this article; Teacher education is a global concern; thus it should be seen in a global perspective. Included in its programs should be the study of the environment and the on-going process of globalization for international cooperative action, exchange of experiences and insights among teachers through conference and research participation for a deeper understanding of human nature and the culture of a diverse people.

Title of Article: A Framework for Giving a CLEAR Directions Writer: Excerpt from George W. Chilcoat & Robert Stahls Effective Teacher Verbal Behavior, Clearing House.Vol. 60 Place/Year of Publication: Re-print Manila, Philippines, 2006 Area: Teaching Strategies
Key Points Why do you feel this is helpful in teaching? In what learning situation(s) is this applicable?

* Teacher talk might be considered the heart of instruction. * State the purposes for a particular task so that the what is to be done. * Giving clear directions to say and second how to say it. * Clearer and more precise directions can help pinpoint deficiencies.

This article helps me realized that the way teachers talk to students, the way in which they interact is vital to both successful learning and article, Teacher talk might be considered the heart of important point that determines how successfully students will learn is the way instructions are formulated and sometimes it is this point which distinguishes good teachers from bad ones. I learned from this article the functions and purposes of giving clear directions and checklist of effective Teacher Directions. And if directions or

* Before starting our class, we intend to give directions and instructions because providing definite instructions for them will reduce the risk of unfavourable behaviour and can be beneficial on my part as the teacher. Distractions will be minimal and class time will be maximized solely for the lesson. * On the application part of any learning process instructions should be given BEFORE the students start to work, otherwise desired output. * And as a Computer Teacher, Instructions

instructions are not effectively and clearly formulated, there will be a number of students who will simply not have adapted what is to be done or have only caught part of the information. I also learned from this article that teachers should establish routine by giving instructions in a consistent way. By doing this, students will almost always know what they are expected to do. Being clear with your instructions and expectations will reduce the probability of constant distractions and interruptions. With better ways to direct students, teachers will help not only attentive students but also those seemingly low achievers who cant do a task because they may have trouble understanding what is asked from them.

should always be followed by demonstration. The best way to tell students how to do something is to actually do it yourself. Talking and talking for minutes can be counterproductive and timewasting when a quick demo can illustrate the activity not only linguistically but visually.

Title of Article: The Power of Projects Writer: Curtis, D. Educational Leadership Place/Year of Publication: Newport News, Virginia, 2002 Area: Teaching Strategies and Classroom Management
Key Points Why do you feel this is helpful in teaching? In what learning situation(s) is this applicable?

* In project work, they invest a lot of their own energy and interest. And they appreciate being able to share with others what they've done. * Students cannot reasonably claim to understand what they cannot demonstrate. * Research has shown that when students are given the latitude to pursue topics that interest them by doing what real scientists, special-interest groups, or business people do to solve problems, they go far beyond the minimum effort. * They need to be ready to encourage a student who wants to take off in

This article is a collection of research done by George Lucas Educational Foundation. It helps teacher decides whether to use a project-based learning or remain to the traditional instructional materials. This article was so helpful because it explicit advantages of using projects as an assessment tool. Teachers who bring project-based learning into the classroom may have to adopt new instructional strategies to achieve success. Having the teacher take the role of guide or facilitator is not the way that most educators were taught, nor even the way they were taught to teach. Directinstruction methods that rely on textbooks, lectures, and traditional assessments do not work well in the more openended, interdisciplinary world of project-based learning. Rather, teachers do more coaching and modelling and

* Employing constructivist methods of teaching in one's classroom forces students to take an active role in their education by making choices and assuming responsibility for intelligent inquiry and discovery. For instance, discussions, projects, and experiments ensure student achievement and allow students and the teacher to discover individual student's preferences and strengths. This approach facilitates differentiated activities for each student's distinctive ambitions, making the subject more relevant to every student's life. * Doing projects teaches

an unexpected direction to pursue his or her interests, and also make sure that the student covers a required state or local curriculum.

less "telling." I learned in this article that Projects provided students a chance to learn at home or at school and in a different format than the normal lectures/activities assignments, Projects are an easy way to incorporate literacy and creativity into learning and assessment, Projects can be flexible in nature, including individual or group work. I also realized that if we used this project-based learning we should come up with a rubrics; Its important to create a clear, usable rubric and teach kids how to read it which I got to use to it because of Professor Maam Ubia teach us how to create our own classroom activity rubrics.

you more because you get to experiment and understand how things work. If you can experiment and see how things work, it will be stored in your brain longer. And if it's funnier, you'll learn faster. Like in Science subjects where in its more fun to experience making a lungs model using recycled materials than imagining how lungs work. * Learning how to cook makes easy also when you give a cooking project to your students because it creates more work for them than the traditional textbook curriculum.

Title of Article: The Value of Test Construction Principles in Writing Classroom Tests Writer: SOL G. SIMBULAN(Bukidnon State College,Malaybalay City) Place/Year of Publication: Manila, Philippines, July 2006 Area: Test Construction
Key Points Why do you feel this is helpful in teaching? In what learning situation(s) is this applicable?

* Tests are constructed to determine how much a student knows rather than determining what the student must learn. * It is important that teachers construct each question so that a correct response indicates mastery of the learning objective and any incorrect response provides information about the nature of the students lack of mastery. * The Sometimes-AlwaysNever (SAN) questions are difficult to construct but can force the student to engage in some critical thinking.

By means of this I realized that Creating effective tests is an essential task for all teachers. I learned that a well-written test allows teachers to precisely measure students mastery of specific content taught in class. Results of well-written tests also allow teachers to measure, to some degree, how effective their instruction has been. On the other hand, poorly designed test questions can lead to inaccurate measurements of learning and provide incorrect information regarding student performance, as well as effectiveness of instruction. Testing is a usually a key component in a teachers overall assessment strategy. The quality of the tests given is closely linked with their ability to provide the kind of information you need regarding the student performance. While reading this article, I

In every learning situation, It is not how good or how well you deliver your lesson but it is more important that your student understand your lesson in any possible way you did. Test helps us assess a students understanding of a given topic within a subject and identify what they have learned. * In any teaching process we are giving an evaluation at the end of lesson proper to evaluate a students progress in our subject within a given period of time. * In any school scenario we are giving an examination, whether

remember one quotation from The Philadelphia Trumpet that 13% of students who fail in class are caused by faulty test questions so this article would guide me as I enter the profession in construction evaluation to assess the learning of my students. And it ended with a reminders according to Oriondo and Antonio (Evaluating Educational Outcomes), To be able to prepare a good test, one has to have a mastery of the subject matter, knowledge of the pupils to be tested, skill in verbal expression and use of the different test format.

periodical test, achievement test, formative test nor diagnostic test to assess a students strengths and weaknesses for focus, assistance or individualized instruction.

Title of Article: How to Teach and Motivate the Un-motivated Writer: Professor Joe Martin (http://www.newteacheruniversity.com) Place/Year of Publication: http://www.newteacheruniversity.com/2013 Area: Classroom Management and Teaching Strategies
Key Points Why do you feel this is helpful in teaching? In what learning situation(s) is this applicable?

* Its been proven that the number one reason why most students drop out of school is a lack of purpose. * The key is that you must have conviction for the material and concepts youre teaching. No one is going to believe the messenger if she doesnt believe in the message theyre inseparable. * Assure your students of their self-worth by separating them from their problems. Constantly remind them that failure is not permanent, but neither is success

Since Im fresh from an immersion or from what they called practice teaching, this article makes me realize that I did a great job on my practicum. Teaching the lower section students would let you uninspired since they could not cope nor understand your subject well but that was just my perception before. As I read this article, it pushed me to work hard every day to let my students inspired in making it in school and let them feel excited to learn and study more on my class. I realized by means of this article that The key is that you must have conviction for the materials and concepts youre teaching. No one is going to believe the messenger if she doesnt believe in the message theyre inseparable. You must Teach and lead by example. Have your students stop by and talk to you about the struggles

Public school students who didnt have computers at home found it so boring to learn new Computer skills, in addition of their million problems; No Idea on how to open Computer, They felt that they dont have any right to learn computers(These are the reasons they said why they see my subject boring) and so on. Because of these, I think of an alternative strategies that would motivate them to learn something on my subject. Every day I make it a point that I have a motivational activity that could either be a play or group activity and will allow them to participate

theyre having with motivation. There is no such thing as a "typical" day in the life of a classroom teacher. Thus, good teachers approach each day with an open mind and a sense of humor. Since I assigned in a public school, I prepared myself that Ill be meeting different types of students with different family background and problems. Because of that, I make it sure that when we started our class they will set aside all the problems they have and just focus on our topic. Instead of finding this process exhausting or frustrating, I came up enjoying this crop because I get to apply my creative problemsolving skills in fresh ways on an ongoing basis. Another reason that made my off campus experience wonderful. Because I know, once in my life, I got to touch lives of young people.

and forget everything outside our room. And during our discussion, Im relating my subjects on some new trends like dota, flappy bird, facebook, twitter, counter strike and many more in this way I know that I keep them still with me until the end of my lesson.

Title of Article: Guides for Happy, Healthy Teaching Writer: Reference: The 1991Educators Diary Place/Year of Publication: Reprinted from Phoenix Publishing Houses Area: Teachers Personality and Priviledges
Key Points Why do you feel this is helpful in teaching? In what learning situation(s) is this applicable?

* Teachers need the opportunity to assume new responsibilities and authority. * Teachers should be provided confidential diagnoses, counselling/training/ Conditioning and referral services to help them deal with physical and emotional exhaustion. * Classroom teachers also must be encouraged to discuss areas of concern, to share lesson plans, to produce materials for one another, to schedule days when they trade effective lessons and instructional technology regularly.

This article discusses things teacher should do as they continue their passion. They are on the frontline. If they are not fit to cope with the never-ending, ever-changing series of loads and burdens they face moment to moment, they will not provide the quality teaching and learning experience expected from them. They will not be the great teacher they aspired to be when they entered the profession. I also read that according to the Health and Safety Executive, teaching is among the top five occupations affected by work-related stress, with 70% of teachers and lecturers saying their health has suffered because of their job. Quality teaching is the result of having an underlying structure that supports both the learner and the teacher. Both students and teachers need to be supported, fit and well to be inspired and inspiring.

Stress weakens the immune system. Low immune system means sickness. Sickness leads to teacher absence. Teacher absence means students attention diversity. Higher teacher Absenteeism leads to lower student performance. Teacher absence generates extra workload for colleagues, a disrupted curriculum and inadequate learning.
