SUBJECT : Trouble shooting for the engine overheating MODELS : MUSSO CONDITION:
When the vehicle has been driven the long time in hot weather, the engine is maybe overheated. This information helps you check the possible cause and prevent reoccur.

CORRECT
- SYMC has improved the viscous clutch and cap-reservoir. So when the vehicle comes to your workshop, check the cooling reservoir-tank cap and viscous clutch and rework it following the work procedure. - Also clarify the coolant leak from the cooling route.

Phenomenon
1. Driver's sensibility - Temperature gauge up to red zone. - Steam comes out from the engine room. 2. Engine condition - Cylinder head is deformed. - Piston & Metal bearing seized.

Check procedure
- Check the all cooling system components. 1. If a cooling problem exists, check all cooling system components such as radiator(blockage, two pass radiator baffle leak), water pump, thermostat, temperature gage, etc. - Check the coolant & cooling reservoir tank cap 1. Coolant level a) Check the coolant level in the reservoir tank. b) The coolant level should be between "LOW" and "FULL" mark on the coolant surge tank in cold condition. c) If the level is below the "LOW" mark, refill the radiator. [caution] * The antifreeze content of the coolant should be mixed to a minimum 50%. * The antifreeze content never exceed 60%. * Do not use alcohol or methanol antifreeze or don't mix them with the specified coolant. * Use only soft(demineralzied) water in the coolant mixture. * Do not overfill the coolant.

2. Closed state of the cooling reservoir-tank cap a) Check the plugged status of the cooling reservoir-tank cap. b) If it is not plugged fully, tighten the cap again. b) Sometimes it might be also the cause of engine overheating. 3. Inside of cooling reservoir-tank cap a) Check the inside of cooling reservoir-tank cap. b) If the cap-spring which is inside of cap is beyond the correct position like no horizontal, the cap must be replaced with improved one. cap-spring

- Check the viscous clutch 1. Check the silicon oil leakage in the pin hole of viscous clutch. cooling fan

2. If the silicon oil is leaked, the viscous clutch must be replaced with improved one. 3. With the engine off, turn the fan drive by hand. It should have some drag, but turn smoothly.
4. If it has rough spots or doesn't turn, it is defective. It must be replaced also.

- Viscous clutch
a. In line improvement Content Applied date The tolerance of bimetal bending is changed Aug. 17, 2001 (The specification tolerance of bimetal was controlled at the lowest limit. Therefore bimetal was bent permanently, and oil was leaked through the pin hole.) b. Rework for damage case - Replace the viscous clutch - Improved viscous clutch part number : 6612003722 ( engaging thermal point changed : 944 -> 844)
