Statistics project- A Typical Year 7 Student By: Fa

In math class, we were asked to do a statistics project about the behavior of year 7 students. As it is difficult to ask all year 7 students from 5 classes (census), I decided to take a stratified random sampling, from the whole population I have decided to make sub groups of each containing 4 randomly chosen people from each class. My qualitative survey question is How do typical year 7 students travel to school? and my quantitative question was How much time typical year 7 students spend on their homework each day? Here are some of data statistics is shown below: My Samples from each class are: It is impractical to ask all the students in year 7 from different classes, so I decided to take a sample by selecting 4 students at random from each class as the sample is 2 reflect the opinions of the whole class so it must be large enough to give me a fair indication, therefore, I asked 20 students in total. How do typical year 7 students travel to school?

Since I cant calculate the median and the mean of this survey question because it is a qualitative question, I can only calculate the mode, which would be As we can see from the table and the bar- graph that out of 20 students, 12 commute to school by car. Therefore, the mode of typical year 7 students traveling to school is by car. It is the most compared to the other mode of transportation. These 2 questions, how do typical year 7 students travel to school and how much time do typical year 7 students spend time doing their homework each day are related. They are related if a student takes a longer time to reach school than another student, they wont have much time doing their homework. Whilst, the student who takes less time to reach school have more time to do their homework compared to the other student.

How much time typical year spend on their homework each day?
Here is the table of the results that I have collected from the survey: Time taken by a Number of Students student to come to ( Frequency) school (minutes) 30 1 Mean time taken by year 7 student 60 2 90 1 = Total Time spent by all the students to 120 4 travel to school 135 1 Total number of students 150 3 180 1 210 1 240 4 270 1 = (30 1 + 60X1 + 90X1 + 120X4 + 330 1 135x1 + 150x3 + 180x1 + 210x1 + 240x4 + 270x1 + 330x1) Time spent by year 7 students doing their homework each day 1+1+1+4+1+3+1+1+4+1+1

The median of this data is 150 because if you list the data in ascending order, 150 will be in the middle. 30,60,90,120,120,120,120,135,150,150,150,180,210, 240,240,240,240,270,330 The mode time (minutes) of how long typical year 7 students spend on their homework.

Time (minutes) The results of both of my As you can see from above, we have 3 averages for above data questions told me a lot about the statistics. Mean time is 159.75 minutes, Median time is 150, and Modal life of a typical year 7 student. time is 120 and 240. I decided to use mean to represent this data that They come to school mostly by on average a student spends 160 minutes doing their homework. I have car and most of them spend 120 used mean because it uses all of the data. However, mean can be or 240 minutes on doing their affected by much larger or smaller values (outliers). Median can be homework. misleading, as it does not use all the values. In this case, we have 2 modes, 120 and 240 which is not useful because data set is very small as here might be some studious students who spend 120 or 240 minutes doing their homework. Therefore, I conclude, mean is the best average to represent the total time spend by a year 7 student which is 160 minutes. (rounded to nearest unit).
