Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the U.S. In 2008, it caused almost 25% of all deaths in the U.S. In 2012, it was projected to cost the U.S. $108.9 billion

San Bernardino County has the highest age adjusted death rate for CHDsurpassing the state and national rates.
PREVENTION
1. Dont smoke or use tobacco 2. Maintain a healthy body weight 3. Eat a heart-healthy diet
DIABETES
FACTS
of the population
Riverside, San Bernardino and Imperial counties exceeded both the state & national age adjusted death rates for diabetes 11.8% of all men aged 20 years or older have diabetes 10.8% of all women aged 20 years or older have diabetes
In 2004, heart disease was noted on 68% of diabetes-related death certificates among people aged 65+ years

In 2009, gonorrhea was the 2nd most reported infectious disease in the U.S. Between 60-73% of those infected with an STI become infected again in less than a year
San Bernardino & San Diego County held the highest cruse case rate for gonorrhea out of the four counties.
PREVENTION
1. Use a condom when you have sex 2. Ask your partner to be tested for STIs 3. Dont have sex with someone who has any unusual symptoms
4. Consider regular gonorrhea screening if you have an increased risk 5. Gonorrhea can be cured with the right treatment

SUMMARY
Among the 4 counties, the most frequent cause of death was diseases of the heartexcept for San Diego County, which was cancer. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the U.S. 8.3% of the U.S. population are diagnosed with diabetes. Gonorrhea is the 2nd most reported infectious disease in the U.S.
In San Bernardino County (as well as the other 3 counties), the area is scattered with large numbers of fast food restaurants and few grocery stores. Highly correlated with heart disease & diabetes Food deserts Lack of access to healthy food options
CONCLUSION
To move forward in a positive and beneficial manner, these counties are in need of Public health, community-based activities such as:
Groups promoting healthy and active lives for community members Health education lessons or classes to increase awareness of the dangers and risks of making unhealthy decisions as well as the benefits of eating healthy and exercise More grocery stores for easier access to more nutritious food options
