INTERNATIONAL CONDUCTING SUMMER SCHOOL WITH CHRISTOPHER GAYFORD

Christopher Gayford helps all conductors whether or not they have previous experience, achieve remarkable results by working on score-learning, interpretation, gesture, rehearsing techniques and self-confidence, using examples from the choral, orchestral and prepare repertoires. Some pieces will be specified in advance so that you can do some initial preparation. All participants are asked to bring any instruments that they might play with them so that the group can form ad hoc ensembles. RESIDENT: 475 NON-RESIDENT: 370 (UNDER 27S RESIDENT: 356.25 NON-RESIDENT: 277.50) WHO CAN BENEFIT?
Conducting should be as easy and natural as singing, taught and practised from childhood. Like singing, we all have the capacity to conduct yet its surrounded by a mystique which obscures how accessible it really is. Christopher Gayford believes that conducting should be a central plank of music education. Once you can read music above about the level of ABRSM grade 5, there is no reason why anyone shouldnt consider studying conducting.

WHO IS THE COURSE AIMED AT?

Participants over the last few years have come from a broad range of musical backgrounds, ranging from professional musicians keen to develop careers as conductors to amateurs who just want to deepen their understanding of conducting. The majority of students regularly conduct choirs or ensembles, and arrive at Benslow with the goal of finding out how to improve their rehearsal and performance skills. In most groups there have been several people who have never conducted before. Unlike many other training courses, a disparity in experience amongst students is not problematic. This can be explained by the fact that basic conducting gestures can be acquired in hours rather than years.

WHAT WILL YOU LEARN?

The course is as much as possible tailored to the needs of each individual. On the first evening, course members are invited to set goals for themselves during the week. Some people may have a particular interest in baton technique, others in how to run effective rehearsals. Every student will leave Benslow having had the chance to work on a daily basis with an ensemble or choral group. During every session, students conduct groups of different sizes, initially exploring individual elements of conducting technique such as dynamics and phrasing. In later sessions, students begin to find out how to synthesize gestures that convey several meanings.

studied at the Royal College of Music and the Royal Northern College of Music with Timothy Reynish. He has conducted a wide range of repertoire and worked with many major orchestras and opera companies, including the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, where he held the post of assistant conductor, BBC Philharmonic, BBC Scottish, Symphony Orchestra, BBC Concert Orchestra, Britten Sinfonia, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Ulster Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Opera North and Scottish Opera. As a founder member of the new music group Psappha, he was involved in education project work that now forms one of his chief areas of interest. He has conducted the City of Sheffield Youth Orchestra since 1994. From 2000 until 2003 Christopher worked on a project called Feeling Sound, which was hosted and partially funded by Trinity College of Music. The project set out to see if there was a missing link in our understanding of listening. He led a series of three Feeling Sound concerts at the Barbican with the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, during which he conducted Mozarts last three symphonies. Internationally, he has taken part in master classes with Gennadi Rozhdestvensky, Ilya Musin and Peter Eotvos and competed in two international conducting competitions. In Cadaques, he won second prize, and in Besancon, joint first prize. These successes led to concerts in Spain, France and Austria. Of his debut with the Vienna Chamber Orchestra, the Wiener Zeitung commented: in Elgars Serenade for Strings, he showed how it is possible to produce elegant music in an apparently effortless manner, with precisely the right degree of tension and masterly shaping of the sound: a beautiful performance. Listen to Chris who talks to Vivienne Parry about how he first discovered Feeling Sound at The Royal Institution, London on You Tube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i82Qusz0mtc
