Q1. I want to understand what is BTS?

What are its different configurations and what is the power consumption/peak current for each of these types of BTS?
Ans: BTS abbreviated for Base Transiever Station is a collection of transmission and reception card designed for routing of signals from end user to msc and vice versa. There are many types of BTS depending on the manufacturing companies viz nokia, ericcsion, zte, huwai etc ...i've worked on a few so can tell u about them in nokia there is practically 2,2,2/4,4,4/8,8,8 configuration but this may vary depending upon the traffic requirement of the circle. Mostly composite configurations are used, like 2,3,3 or 2,2,4 etc. these nos are nothing but no of trx cards in each sector , for example 2,2,2 is 2 trx cards in each of three sectors. power consumption also is different for each type of BTS, for NOKIA's Flexi indoor BTS running on 222 config power requiremnt will be approx 48 watts per hour typically on every BTS 48V is supplied with negative polarity.

Q2. which slot is reserve for GPRS ?

Ans: Total time slots= 0 to 31= 32 slots. In which 27,28,29 & 30 are reserved for GPRS. Each
time slot is of 64kbps and total is 64*4=256kbps. Thats why we are getting 256kbps when connecting to internet through mobile. This is standard in GSM/Edge BTS. We can also reduce the speed to 64, 128 or 192 by changing the time slot. Q3. Why -48 v is given to bts? Ans: a) In this voltage Noise generation is minimum. b) To prevent the equipments from lightning strokes. Because the cloud is negatively charged at bottom it requires a zero or a positive potential to discharge, and it selects the ground (Zero potential) to discharge. If the Telecom Equipments are fed with positive the cloud will choose the low resistance tallest positively charged Antenna's to discharge, this could damage the entire setup of Telecom equipments. So the Telecom equipments are fed with Negative supply Voltage Q4. What is Antenna gain? Ans: antenna gain is defined as that ratio of antennae radiated power in some direction and isotropic antenna whose radiated power equally in all direction. Q5. Explain the configuration of 4+4+4. Ans: This means a BTS consist 4TRX per sector and there is 3 sector in a BTS. Q6. Explain BTS configuration 4+2+2. Ans: BTS configration 4+2+2 means there are 4 trx in the 1st sector then 2 in second sector then 2 in the third sector.

Q7. Which modulation we use in case of GPRS and EDGE? Ans: GMSK for GPRS and 8PSK (i.e. pi/4 PSK) for EDGE. Q8.

What are the different types of GSM antenna?

Ans: Handset=Omnidirectional=Monopole antenna/Whip antenna Tower=Directional=Parabolic antenna

Q9. What are active & passive elements in BTS? Ans: Active elements: TRX,DUPLEXER, BB2F, PWSX, BOIA, TRANSMISSION CARD
Passive elements: COMBINER, MULTICOUPLER GSM antenna is also a passive element.
