From the Commander It is Hurricane season and it is important to have a plan of action for
yourself and family. Keep in mind that hurricanes are unpredictable, and can change its path of destruction. Log on to the Miami Dade County Emergency Management at www.miamidade.gov/emergency or visit our squadron website at www.fl279.flwg.us.

Safety: Heat Injuries

Staying hydrated in hot weather can help
reduce the risk of heat-related illness. Keep water or sports drinks (with electrolytes) on hand to maintain hydration, and try to stay in a shady or air-conditioned location during the hottest parts of the afternoon. Mild symptoms -- heat exhaustion -- may include feeling thirsty, fatigue and cramps (legs or abdominal). If left untreated, heat exhaustion can progress to heatstroke. Heatstroke is serious. Symptoms may include any of the following: dizziness, trouble breathing, headaches, rapid heartbeat, nausea, vomiting, confusion and changes in blood pressure. Skin may be flushed and feel hot and dry (not sweaty). Body temperature may rise to 104 degrees or higher, and as it becomes more severe, the risk of organ damage (to the liver, kidneys and brain) increases. Kids are more susceptible to heat illnesses than adults are because their central nervous system is not yet fully developed. Strenuous activity and dehydration make it difficult for young bodies to regulate changes in body temperature, and chronic health conditions such as diabetes or cardiovascular disease and medicines such as antihistamines also increase the risk. Kids are also at risk for heat illnesses if left in a hot car -- even if the windows are cracked and even if it's only for a few minutes. Never leave a child unattended in a car.

Civil Air Patrol/Homestead ARB 4th of July Celebration

The Homestead Air Reserve Base Cadet Squadron participated in the 3rd annual 4th of July Celebration at Homestead ARB. The squadron was in charge of two attractions during the celebration. One of the attractions was the Snow Cone tent, which catered to the children as well as some adults and allowing the attendees to stay cool and relaxed. It was such a great attraction that the tent ran out of snow cones. The second attraction was the Jump Castles for kids. The jump castles were ran by the cadets ensuring that every child had their share in fun. The 482nd Fighter Wing thanked the Homestead cadet squadron for their support and efforts during 4th of July event and was welcomed and invited to next years celebrations.

Cadet Programs

Summer Encampment is right around the corner

sign up mow. Encampments are week-long activities that serve to build a foundation for cadets from which to build their Civil Air Patrol experience. These wee- long events provide indepth orientation to Civil Air Patrol and the United States Air Force. First time cadets can expect to be challenged both mentally and physically during a busy and exciting week of hands on leadership development training, aerospace events, and local site activities. Cadets returning as staff will be challenged even further through the leadership roles they will fill and staff duties they will perform. All cadets will have the opportunity to be introduced to the military, learn to overcome challenges, develop time-management skills, enhance their interpersonal skills, and have a great time. The Summer Encampment will be held at Camp Blanding Florida on July 29th August 4 2012. Logon to: http://flcadet.com/activities/summerencampment.aspx

Aerospace Education:
NASA Dream Chaser

The private Dream Chaser space plane took to the skies Tuesday, kicking off a flight-test program that will vet the vehicle's ability to carry astronauts to and from lowEarth orbit. The Dream Chaser, which is built by aerospace firm Sierra Nevada Corp. (SNC), did not fly under its own power during the test. Instead it was held aloft the entire time by an Erickson Air-Crane heavy-lift helicopter, which hauled the space plane through the skies near Denver to verify its aerodynamic flight performance.

Still, the so-called captive-carry test marks an important step forward in the Dream Chaser's progress, company officials said. "The successful captive-carry flight test of the Dream Chaser full-scale flight vehicle marks the beginning of SNC's flight test program, a program that could culminate in crewed missions to the International Space Station for NASA," said former astronaut Steve Lindsey
