Longs Creek Elementary Critical Incident Response Plan


Critical Incident Response Plan Terms When an emergency occurs at a campus or other school district location, the entire staff needs to provide an immediate and coordinated response. There are five basic procedures which can be utilized in the initial response to various incidents. During each response, teachers should account for all students and immediately report any discrepancies to administration. During each drill teachers should have their rosters.

Evacuation Plan (bomb threat, fire, hazardous material incident, gas leak) Each administrator should have possession of their Critical Incident Response Handbook and cellular phone during an evacuation of their campus b. Staff and students should evacuate to one of the following evacuation sites (as specified by administration): a. 1) Madison High School 5005 Stahl Road San Antonio, TX 78247 637-4400 2) Longs Creek Recreation Center 15862 Walnut Creek Drive San Antonio, TX 78247 403-3604

Shelter In Place (air pollution alert, toxic exposure, severe weather) Sometimes conditions outside of the school threaten the safety of school occupants; e.g. a fire creating toxic smoke, a toxic materials spill, etc. a. Close all windows and doors to protect students and staff by keeping them inside the building while preventing toxic or hazardous chemicals from entering the building b. Custodians will shut down HVAC systems c. If you class is on the playground immediately bring the students into a classroom in building to await further notice Lock Down (gunfire, violent persons, community alerts) Hard Lock Down- threat on campus Close and lock all doors (including those of adjacent unoccupied rooms) Turn off all lights Close all blinds Hide students under tables, behind heavy furniture, in a closet, in the bathroom, etc. (avoid windows or glass areas) e. If all students are accounted for, hang a piece of green paper on the classroom door f. Persons in open areas should immediately hit the deck by dropping flat to the ground g. Custodians will secure all doors h. If your class is on the playground If the problem exists inside the building take students to the evacuation site; or If the problem exists outside the building, have students lay flat on the ground or immediately usher them into the building (depending on the situation). a. b. c. d. Soft Lock Down involves students remaining/going inside a building when a potential threat is identified in a neighboring area around your campus. Inside activities go on as usual with an increased perimeter security and situational awareness until the potential threat is resolved a. Close all blinds b. Custodians will secure all doors c. If you class is on the playground, immediately bring the students into your classroom within the building.

Duck & Cover - (earthquake, explosion, roof collapse, structural failure, tornado) Seek shelter in designated hallways, rooms, etc., while avoiding large free-span roof areas Students and staff should kneel in designated areas with hands over their head Students and staff should stay 15 feet away from open glass and skylights If your class is on the playground immediately bring the students in the building to the nearest safe area; or have students duck and cover near the lowest ground Quarantine involves providing a sick/isolation area separating sick persons from the general school population in situations involving potential flu or contagious disease exposure
