Selecting Teams/Background Information On Students

Selection Of Teams
Six teams (five players per team). This is designed so that there is no wait time and everyone can practice their student role.

The teacher will pick teams based on many factors. The season should be competitive. Therefore, the teams will be based on skill level, and working with different people than usual. Tried to put leaders with the students who are followers. This should motivate the other students to become independent with the encouragement of their teammates. Students need to get use to work with all of their classmates. Communicating and working as a team can be very valuable in all areas of life. The teams will be mixed with males and females as well (as much as possible). The teams will also based on skill level because the teacher wants to make sure all games are competitive, and that one team does not dominate. Many colleges across the country have club ultimate frisbee teams. Each team in this sport education model will be a division 1A college team. Once the students are placed in their respected teams, they must pick a division
4

one college they would like to be. It can be any division one college (they do not need to have ultimate frisbee)

The Teams/Team Members

University Of ( Huskies ) Connecticut

Team Members: Gentlemen: Tim Dow (Captain) ( Height: 64 Weight: 180): A very athletic, knowledgeable, and respectful young man. Tim is a great leader through his actions. He is always looking to get better, and will do what is best for the entire class. Tim is also part of the latin club. Jared Richardson (Coach) (Height: 59 Weight: 150): This young man is filled with energy and is very positive. He is not the biggest, fastest, or strongest student in class, but his attitude separates himself from many other students. Jared never misses class. He is very reliable. Jared is a very strong English student and writes for the school newspaper. Tyler Walton (Referee) (Height: 511 Weight: 165): Tyler is a great student to have in class. He is very competitive and sometimes lets his competitiveness influence his actions.
5

Keeping his emotions in check are something he needs to improve. However, he leads by example and influences others to work as hard as him. Ladies: Emily Roy (Manager) (Height: 61 Weight: 175): Emily always gives one-hundred percent effort in each class. However, she is not very coordinated and has a hard time executing the proper skills for each activity. She also has the tendency to be a follower rather than a leader. Emily is a senior. Teachers are encouraging her to work on some of her social skills to become more of an independent person. Sarah Frost (Scorekeeper/Statistician) (Height: 56 Weight: 145): Sarah has great talent but does not usually give maximum effort. She has very good hand eye coordination and is very quick. However, her work ethic is not very good. She could be a standout student in this class if she really wanted to. Sarah also misses class more often than most students. Syracuse University ( Orange )

Team Members:
6

Gentlemen: Josh Allaire (Manager) (Height: 510 Weight: 240): Josh is a great student to have in class. His personality is very easy-going and he brings a funny side to the class. He is very respectable as well. Josh plays football for the school. Josh is a senior who has been dedicated to everything he does for the last four years. He is pretty athletic. However, his cardiovascular endurance is not the best. Josh is interested in hunting and fishing and plans to be a game warden someday. Matt Thibodeau (Scorekeeper/Statistician) (Height: 510 Weight: 130): Matt is very athletic. He plays three varsity sports for the school (football, track & field, and cross country skiing) however, he is a follower and not a leader. He will do what the teachers ask, but nothing more. Matt does the least amount of work possible (he is lazy most of the time). However, is a strong math student, and is interested in majoring in engineering when he goes to college. Ladies: Kelsie Bouchard (Coach) (Height: 55 Weight: 160): Does a great job of helping out the teachers. Always offering to help with whatever needs to be done. She is a very independent person and works hard at everything she does. When it comes to athleticism she is not that gifted, but her work ethic makes up for it. Kelsie is very good friends with Emily Roy on the University Of Connecticut Huskies. Samantha Roy (Captain) (Height: 61 Weight: 175): Is the twin sister of Emily Roy. Samantha is very similar to Emily in which she tries as hard as she can every single class. However, unlike
7

Emily, Samantha is very coordinated and is probably one of the most athletic girls in the school. She plays three sports (soccer, track & field, and basketball). Morgan Shaw (Referee) (Height: 54 Weight: 135): Morgan is very strong and fast. She has the ability to be a force in class because she makes other students seem like they are going in slow motion. Morgan is very shy and does not like to say a lot in class. However, she gives maximum effort every single day. Morgan plays field hockey for the school and volunteers at a local hospital. She is only a freshman, and has the ability to be a great athlete and leader for this school. Michigan State University ( Spartans )

Team Members: Gentlemen: Jack Coleen (Captain) (Height: 66 Weight: 220): Jack is very athletic for his size and can more very well. He plays football, basketball, and lacrosse outside of class. He works hard in
8

class and pushes himself to the limit. His work ethic in school and in sports is what separates himself from other student athletes. Jack helps out at a local soup kitchen, and is apart of the spanish club. Jack is a junior who contributes to a great amount of the schools recent success. Dustin Cole (Manager) (Height: 58 Weight: 170): Another great athlete. Dustin is one of the stars on the basketball team. He is really good friends with Jared Richardson. Dustin does not too typically well in school because he puts all of his time into basketball. He is a junior looking to earn a basketball scholarship. Cole Libby (Coach) (Height: 63 Weight: 205): Cole has a great attitude in class, and is one of the best leaders in the entire school. He does an excellent job of leading by example by working hard and always respecting others. He is on the soccer, and basketball varsity teams. He is also on the math team, and volunteers in coaching youth sports. Ladies: Adrie Newton (Referee) (Height: 58 Weight: 160): She does not do a good job of listening to directions, and puts yourself before others. She rarely gives maximum effort, and often causes many problems in class. Adrie misses class occasionally but often shows up late. Being on a team with Cole will maybe motivate her to change her attitude. Samantha Augello (Scorekeeper/Statistician) (Height: 56
9

Weight: 125): Samantha has a low self-esteem and is very shy. She does not like to reach out to others. Athleticism is not a problem but she just does not have the confidence to see high levels of success for yourself. Having motivation from Cole, Dustin, and Jack will maybe help her confidence in this season. Samantha is a Sophomore and is often influenced to do things by the upperclassmen. University Of Notre Dame ( Fighting Irish )

Team Members: Gentlemen: Garrett Erb (Manger) (Height: 61 Weight: 185): A very gifted athlete. Has potential to be good at anything he does athletically. Garrett is apart of the varsity football, basketball, and baseball teams. He work ethic could be a little better, but it is not bad. Garrett is shy and does not reach out to others (not a
10

very outgoing personality). Garrett is only a freshman. He has a lot of upside as an athlete. Tyler Green (Captain) (Height: 58 Weight: 175): Tyler is challenged athletically. He gives one-hundred percent every single class, and is very outgoing. Like Jared, Tyler brings out the most in others. He is funny, and enjoys physical activity. However, he is not the most gifted student in the class. Tyler works hard for everything. Tyler is very talented as a mechanic. His Dad fixes cars for a living. Tyler can fix anything in an automobile Ladies: Cassie Cooper (Coach) (Height: 61 Weight: 170): Cassie is the president of the senior class, and is also in student council. She has a 4.0 grade point average and is looking to attend an Ivy League school. She is very respectful and kind to all of her classmates. Cassie is the best female basketball player in the entire school. She also hopes to play basketball at the college level. Sydney Nadeau (Scorekeeper/Statistician) (Height: 56 Weight: 135): Sydney enjoys learning. No matter what subject it is, she is always willing to learn. Like Cassie, Sydney holds a 4.0 grade point average, and wants to follow in her mothers footsteps in being a nurse. Sydney is apart of the girls soccer, and girls ice hockey team. Jessica Faunce (Referee) (Height: 54 Weight:125): Jessica
11

does not do very well in school. She has a hard home life. Having Tyler, and Cassie to look up to will hopefully motivate her to try hard and give maximum effort. Physical education class can be a time for Jessica to block out everything else that is going on in her life and have some fun with her classmates. University Of Kansas ( Jayhawks )

Team Members: Gentlemen: Ian Durgin (Captain) (Height: 511 Weight: 185): Ian is very flexible and this makes him a better athlete. He is one of the few students in the class that enjoys weight lifting. Behavioral issues are sometimes a problem. Ian is a sophomore and has a bright future in athletics if he stays out of trouble. Ian is involved with Key Club (community service volunteer. Brent Buck (Manager) (Height: 56 Weight: 130): Brent is a very nice young man. He is a freshman and is always attends class.
12

Physical education is a challenge for Brent because he is not the best athlete. The one thing about Brent is that he is always ready for a new challenge. He will give one hundred percent effort every single class. Mitchell Black (Coach) (Height: 61 Weight: 170): This student is always on task and is very smart. He is the only male in the class that holds a 4.0 grade point average. Mitchell is a part of the latin club, student council, and is the vice president of the senior class. He is also a standout athlete on the soccer team, track & field team, and basketball team. Ladies: Amanda Jordan (Referee) (Height: 58 Weight: 140): Amanda is very nice to all of her classmates and is very respectful to all of her teachers. She is always willing to help others and is well known across the entire school. She is athletic and tries the best to her ability every single class. She is on the field hockey and basketball teams. Amanda also enjoys listening to country music in her free time. Megan Dow (Scorekeeper/Statistician) (Height: 56 Weight: 130): Meagan is the brother of Tim Dow. She is a Sophomore and is a member of student council, latin club, and key club. She also plays field hockey and basketball like Amanda. She is always willing to demonstrate in class and does a good job of leading by example. This gives other students some motivation to work hard and be involved.
13

Louisiana State University ( Tigers )

Aaron Toman (Captain) (Height: 63 Weight: 190): Aaron is a great role model for his peers in class. He is always on his best behavior for every class. Aaron is about of the school band in the winter and also plays varsity soccer and varsity baseball. Aaron is a junior and has made honor roll every single semester of his high school career. Alonzo Connor (Referee) (Height: 510 Weight: 200): Alonzo is very quiet and keeps many thoughts to himself. He is the star running back on the football team. Overall, he is a very athletic kid. Alonzos grades are below average and his self esteem is not that high. Being on the same team with Aaron will maybe help Alonzo become a more independent and confident person because of Aarons positive attitude. Zach Radcliffe (Manager) (Height: 58 Weight: 165): Zach is a decent athlete who is very competitive. He does not like to lose. He experiences anger issues when things do not go his way. Having Aaron on his team is good because this will help Zach settle down. Zach plays football in the fall and lacrosse in the
14

spring for the varsity sports teams. He often does community service for the suspensions he receives throughout the school year. Physical education is good for Zach because he can exert his energy through physical activity. Ladies: Emily Chase (Scorekeeper/Statistician) (Height: 56 Weight: 180): Emily is not the most athletic girl in the class but she tries very hard at everything she does. She is about of the latin club, band, student council, and is secretary of the senior class. Emily enjoys working with people and would like to go to college to become a nurse. Lillian Ramser (Coach) (Height: 53 Weight: 125): Lillian is extremely smart and is a very good actress. She take large on large character responsibilities in school plays. She enjoys dancing and singing in her free time. Lillian always puts others before yourself. She is a true team player.

Student Roles
15

Students will have roles in their respected teams. Everyone must play a part in order for their team to have a successful season. The roles the students can expect to be responsible for are coach, manager, scorekeeper/statistician, referee, captain, a quality teammate, and one that practices good sportsmanship.

All

Roles

Should Be Present In Every

Team

16

The Coach
(One Player On Each Team)

The coach of each team is responsible for several things that take place within the team. Each coach is responsible for setting up practices when the team is not in game play to go over certain strategies and formations. The coach is also required to be a player. This means they have to have control over the team over while continuing to play. Coaches are required to report wins and loses after each individual game.

Any disciplinary problems must first be handled by the coach (if it gets out of hand see the physical education teacher) Coaches need to instill the importance of teamwork and sportsmanship within their teams throughout the entire season. Qualities Of A Success Coach: Leadership, knowledge, motivation, consistency, committed, effective communication skills, and knows how to integrate each athlete into their system.
17

The Manager
(One Player On Each Team)

This person is responsible for all of the equipment needed at practices and games.

The main purpose of having a manager is to make the coaches job easier. Coaches do not want to be gathering equipment and washing uniforms after games. During game play, the manger is responsible to have water, towels, and other necessities that the team may need.

For ultimate frisbee the major equipment needed will be frisbees, cones, and pinnies for the entire team.

18

The Statistician/Scorekeeper
(One Player On Each Team)

The statistician is responsible for recording all of the stats in each game. The Statistician is also responsible for keeping track of all of the scores for each game during game play. Then are then required to report the scores and stats to the entire class after the game.

These stats include scoring, assists, turnovers, penalties, points per game, and points allowed per game. Other students (players) will help the statistician remember all of the stats of each game so that the recording can be accurate. Statistician is responsible for keeping a neat recording sheet for each players stats on their team.

All of these statistics will help determine the awards given at the end of the year.

19

The Referee
(One Player On Each Team) The referee is responsible for making all of the calls that go along with ultimate frisbee.

This individual must play the honesty rule: do not favor your own team.

There for each two referees can discuss a questionable play.

will one referee team, therefore

Every referee must have a high IQ (intelligence quotient) of the game, and know all of the rules.

The Captain
(One Player On Each Team)
20

The captain can be thought of as the coaches assistant.

Just like the coaches, the captain is responsible for disciplinary issues. The coach will discuss practices with the captain beforehand to hear the captains input. Captains can make decisions during game play along with the coach.

If any members of the team have questions, they can approach the captain before going to see the coach.

The Perfect Teammate

(Every Player On Each Team)

Communicate with everyone on the team (during a game or practice).

21

Sacrifice a position or role on the team for the overall benefit of the team. Give 100 percent effort every single day.

Be trustworthy to your teammates. Take on the responsibilities of being apart of something bigger than yourself. Form a bond that nobody can break (continues after the

season).

22

Good Sportsmanship
(Every Player On Each Team)

Every player on each team is encouraged to be respectful of the opposing team and always end each game with a handshake.

No swearing, yelling, pushing, or blaming one another. Each game should be played fairly, and correctly by both teams.

All of the students will have a lot more fun if each player shows good sportsmanship during every competitive game, activity, or practice. Students who fail to practice good sportsmanship will not
23

be allowed to participate until they agree to these terms.

Unit Outcomes
By the end of the season, students will be able to: (P): Practice the proper skill cues and techniques to achieve a team goal that could be used in other sports or activities besides ultimate frisbee (example of a team goal: playing tough team defense, or having good spacing on offense) . (NASPE #1, MA CF 2.17). (C:) Identify at least two offensive strategies and two defensive strategies that can be used in other sports besides ultimate frisbee (example for offense: triangle offense, example for defense: zone defense). (NASPE #2 MA CF 2.17). (A): Respect all classmates, equipment, and the teacher to show good sportsmanship throughout the entire season and give at least one example of sportsmanship that appears in everyday life (example: not blaming others, or getting into fights when things do not go your way). (NASPE #5 MA CF 2.26).

Day

Class Activities
Introduce the sport of Ultimate Frisbee as well as the sport education module. The first class will be a lot of instructing and explaining of how the season is going to be played out. The teacher will go over everything that the sport education model entails to serve as a visual for the students. The teacher will read off the names on each team (6 different teams). The students must come up with a name for their team that is a division one school, and then decide which role each student will play on their team (coach, manager, scorekeeper/statistician, captain, or referee). The captains and coaches of each need to meet with their team and go over team goals. Each coach and captain will have certain individual standards the team must follow. Teams will then begin practicing their offensive strategies (practicing by themselves) Teams will be asked to practice their defensive strategies on their own. Examples of these are zone defenses and and person to person defense. Explanation of responsibilities within the team. The teacher will go over each role to make sure the students are fulfilling their position. After this

conversation, each team can clear up any adjustments that need to be made within the team.

6 7 8

One of the schools varsity coaches will come in and give a presentation on what it means to be the perfect teammate and how each student should act with good sportsmanship. This will give the students some understanding of how important these two things are to be successful in athletics and in life. Teams will each play two exhibition games. There will be four teams playing at once and two teams will be practicing their student role jobs. Five students will be running one game, and five students will be running the other game. These games do not count for anything. They are just played so that all of the students can get use to the system. Round Robin play will start. Each team will play two games everyday. This is a total of six games that will be played every single class. Each game will be fifteen minutes in length (two games going on at once). Traditional Rules
Initiate Play -- Each point begins with both teams lining up on the front of their respective endzone line. The defense throws ("pulls") the disc to the offense. A regulation game has seven players per team. Scoring -- Each time the offense completes a pass in the defense's endzone, the offense scores a point. Play is initiated after each score. Movement of the Disc -- The disc may be advanced in any direction by completing a pass to a teammate. Players may not run with the disc. The person with the disc ("thrower") has ten seconds to throw the disc. The defender guarding the thrower ("marker") counts out the stall count. Change of possession -- When a pass in not completed (e.g. out of bounds, drop, block, interception), the defense immediately takes possession of the disc and becomes the offense. Substitutions -- Players not in the game may replace players in the game after a score and during an injury timeout. Non-contact -- No physical contact is allowed between players.
35

Picks and screens are also prohibited. A foul occurs when contact is made. Fouls -- When a player initiates contact on another player a foul occurs. When a foul disrupts possession, the play resumes as if the possession was retained. If the player committing the foul disagrees with the foul call, the play is redone. Self-Refereeing -- Players are responsible for their own foul and line calls. Players resolve their own disputes. Spirit of the Game -- Ultimate stresses sportsmanship and fair play. Competitive play is encouraged, but never at the expense of respect between players, adherence to the rules, and the basic joy of play. Diagram For Rotation Rules During Regular Season Play Like stated before, each team will play two regular season games for five consecutive classes. Since there are only two games going on at once, two teams will not be playing. I call these the working teams because one team is doing their job by working one game and the other team is working the other game. For example (One Game): LSU vs. Uconn If Kansas is not playing on the other field, they can work this game. Everyone on the Kansas team will try and fulfill their role on by helping run this game. The coach and captain should
38

just provide encouragement and feedback. Everyone else can do their job (See Diagram).

LSU vs. Uconn

Kansas can work this game because they are not playing at this

time.

One-Day Skills Challenge

Teams will rotate challenges every fifteen minutes. Teams that are involved with challenge #1 will move to challenge #2, teams involved with challenge #2 will move to challenge #3, and the teams involved in challenge #3, will move to challenge #1 after every fifteen minutes.

Challenge #1(Shot Accuracy)

Michigan State vs. Kansas
Description Of Challenge: There will ten hula-hoops spread out on a field. The two teams will start from behind the endzone line and throw the frisbees to any hula-hoop. The Objective is to have the frisbee land inside of the hula-hoop. The hula-hoops that are closer to the teams will not be as worth as many points as the hula-hoops that are further away in distance. Teams will receive 1 point for winning the challenge plus the number of frisbee they got in the hulahoops. Example: 1+3=4 points

Hula-Hoops

Team#1 / Team#2

Challenge #2 (5 Star Speed Passing)

Notre Dame vs. Syracuse
Description Of Challenge: Each team will be setup in a star formation. One person will pass it to a teammate and the five star passing rotation will begin. Once someone passes the frisbee to a teammate, they must follow their pass and replace their teammate. Following a pattern of where to go passed on what your teammates are doing will form a star. The objective is catch as many passes in a row in the given amount of time (must stay in star formation). Teams will receive points by earning one point for winning plus the number of consecutive successful passes they completed. Example: 1+27= 28 points.

S(2) S(4) S(1)

S(5) S(3) Team#1

This is the set up for five passing. The #1 indicates where the frisbee will start. The #5 Indicates where the frisbee will finish.

Challenge #3 (Passing Skeleton)

Uconn vs. LSU
Description Of Challenge: The two teams will be facing eachother in a pssing skeleton. The offensive team will be twenty yards from the endzone. The defense will be playing pass defense. The offense had four plays to run to try and cover the twenty yards. If they cannot do this in four plays, the defense gets a point. If the offense scores, they will get two points. If the defensive stops the offense from scoring, theyg get one point and possession of the frisbee (go on offense). Teams can score one point by winning, and then adding up their total points from the competition earned on both offense and defense. Example:

O= offensive players X= defensive players QB= quarterback O O QB

Collegiate Ultimate Frisbee Times

Kansas Wins Championship
By: Jeff Dugan March 12th, 2014
54

Kansas dominated the ultimate frisbee collegiate tournament bring home the championship last night for the first time in the school history. The team only lose two regular season games. These losses before going a perfect 4 for 4 in the tournament. When asked about their season, captain Ian Durgin said winning a championship has always been in the back of our minds. After we won our first couple of games, everyone started to believe we had a chance. Kansas had more than a chance as they mopped everyone off of the floor expect their only two losses to the hands of LSU and Uconn. Brent Buck received the most improved player in the country. When asked about the award, Brent stated it is icing on the cake. Many players worked hard to get better all year long. Every Time I stepped out on the field I just wanted to get better to give my team a chance to win. Although the Jayhawks brought home the hardware, some other teams had a promising season. Uconn made it back to the championship for the third year in a row. They won the championship back in 2012 , but have now lost the last two. It is disappointing, but losing happens stated Uconn captain Tim Dow it is apart of sports. The Fighting Irish had their ups and downs throughout the course of the season. After finishing the regular season with a five-hundred record, the Irish made a run to the semi-final game before getting dismantled by Kansas. After the loss to Uconn
55

which knocked Notre Dame out of the tournament, coach Cassie Cooper stated we could have done a little better in the regular season to put us in an easier spot when it came to the playoffs. A lot of spirit was taken out of us after the loss of Kansas. Syracuse experienced a feeling that was the opposite of Notre Dames. The orange were the second seed in the tournament before losing their first two games to Notre Dame and LSU. The countrys offensive MVP Samantha Roy did not have much to say after the two disappointing losses we did not come out to play from the start and we were not able to claw our way back into either game. After a disappointing, 3-7 regular season, the Tigers picked up the slack by getting their biggest win of the year over Syracuse. This is a huge win for our program stated captain Aaron Toman. The Tigers have a promising team coming back and hope to be a force next season. Nobody was expecting Michigan State to have the year they had. The spartans struggled in every aspect of the game, and could not get anything going all year. In preseason, many analysts had this team making the national championship game. We never built up our team chemistry and we struggled offensively all season said the spartans coach Cole Libby. It was just a very frustrating season to say the least. This season has been a pleasure to cover. Nothing like watching some good collegiate ultimate frisbee. Look out for the incoming recruits across the country. Some teams should be trying to make a name for themselves. Kansas will enjoy being
56

victorious until next season, and they deserve it with their performance in this 2014 season.
