Animal Farm During Reading Questions Chapter 1: 1. What is significant about how the animals arrange themselves as they gather to hear Major? What might this arrangement say about future meetings or events? The pigs and dogs are seated closer to the front and the other animals are seated behind them.

This arrangement shows how the pigs are going to be in charge after Major is gone because they are the cleverest and the dogs will be the pigs guards.

2. According to Major, what is the cause of all the animals problems? Why?

According to Major, the humans are the main problems of animals, because humans dont contribute to producing food, but animals consume what they produce, so without humanity animals will live in peace.

3. Examine the song Beasts of England as poetry. What imagery is present? What is the message? Why do the animals like it so much that they memorize it on the spot? To what emotions and needs does it appeal?

This song creates an image of how the animals will be free from the humans and there would be no more whips and spurs, which means there wouldnt be any slavery. This song makes them excited of thinking about their dreams of being free and it gives them hope to not give up, like a national anthem giving them spirit to stay strong.

Chapter 2: 4. After Majors death what happens to the idea of rebelling against man?

For three months the pigs, mostly by Napoleon and Snowball, lead the animals and meets secretly to learn the system of animalism.

The pigs dont like the pet raven Moses stories about Sugarcandy Mountain because if the animals believe in the amazing world then they wont have motivation to rebel against the humans. 6. Mr. Jones has a drinking problem and when he is drunk, none of his men or him feeds the animals. On Midsummers day the animals break into the feed storage shed and they attack the men when they came out with whips to scare the animals away.

When the humans have been chased from the farm, the animals threw all the nose rings, knives, and the dog chains down the well.

8. How does the behavior of the pigs foreshadow their eventual leadership positions? What do they do to suggest that they want the power?

Snowball forms committees to solve real and imagined problems. The pigs try to teach the other animals who to read and write, but it didnt go well. The pigs set aside the apples for themselves foreshadows that the pigs are going to be in control and dictate over the other animals

Chapter 3 and 4: 9. What further examples of the difference between the pigs and the other animals occur in these two chapters?

Instead of working like the other animals the pigs supervise. Only the pigs suggest solutions at the meetings. The pigs are being the more dominate ones out of the other animals.

10. What are Napoleons ideas about education?

Education is considered more important for the young according to Napoleon, so he takes away Jessie and bluebells puppies.

11. How is Squealer able to convince the other animals to accept whatever Napoleon decides? Squealer uses lies and false scientific proof to convince the other animals to accept whatever Napoleon decides. He threatens that if the other animals do not obey the pigs then Mr. Jones will return. 12. Describe the Battle of the Cowshed.

At the Battle of the Cowshed, the animals rebelled and made Mr. Jones and his men depart from the farm.

13. What was Snowballs part in this battle?

Snowball was able to plan a successful defense on the farm because he studied military strategies from Julius Caesar. He leads the animals and end up with very little damage.

14. Where is Napoleon during the battle?

Napoleon was not described in the battle showing he contributed very little to this battle

15. What is the significance of the guns placement at the foot of the flagpole? (what does this symbolize?)

The gun symbolizes the defeat of the battle against the humans; it is going to be shot twice a year to celebrate the battle and the Midsummers Day Rebellion.

Chapter 5: 16. Why does Mollie run away from the farm? Mollie likes being the center of attention but now she cant wear her ribbons, eating sugar, and being stroked by humans, and she faces hardship at the farm now, so she runs away. 17. What changes have been made in the weekly meetings over the last year?

Now the pigs are in charge and they are the ones that come up with the policies and decisions. The pigs are now the ones in charge and the other animals have to obey them. Only the pigs are allowed to make suggestions and the animals just comes to receive their orders.

18. Explain the windmill controversy from Snowballs point of view. Snowball wants them to build a windmill for the animals lives to be easier, having electrical power and machines. 19. Explain the windmill controversy from Napoleons point of view.

Napoleon believes that the farm is creating too much food, and he thinks the windmill plans are ridiculous.

20. What changes does Napoleon make after his dogs chase Snowball off the farm?

After Snowball was chased off the farm, Napoleon abolished the Sunday Meetings. Now instead the animals salute to the flag and sing Beasts of England and then receive their orders for the week. Now all the decisions are made in the committee of pigs, supervised by Napoleon.

21. Why dont the other animals protest Napoleons decisions?

The other animals are not brave and smart enough to create any arguments against Napoleon decisions. When the sheep start to complain the dogs immediately growls.

22. How have the animals changed how they arrange themselves when they enter the barn to receive their orders as compared to the description in Chapter I? Why is this important and what does it symbolize?

Major used to be in front and now the pigs and dogs are in front during the meetings. This represents that now after major is gone the pigs are in charge and the dogs are guarding them. This is important because it foreshadows the plot of the story of how the animals would be dominated by the pigs.

23. What is the importance of the dogs accompanying Squealer when he comes to talk to the animals? Chapter 6 and 7: 24. Imagine how Snowball might have run things if he had gotten rid of Napoleon. Would things have been any different? Are there indications that Snowballs ideas for running the farm would have proved more beneficial to the animals? Or would things have turned out the same? With the dogs by Squealer is more convincing, because the animals fear the dogs.

Snowball might have run things more traditionally. There would be fewer deaths and less modern changes. It would be fairer with Snowball around. However, Snowball might also be so caught up with being in charge Snowball might just turn out like Napoleon and the other pigs trying to be like humans.

25. How much work are the animals now doing?

The animals are working for 60 hours a week during spring and summer. Napoleon allows the animals to volunteer to work on Sundays but if they dont volunteer the ration of food cut in half.

26. Why does Napoleon decide to engage in trade with neighboring farms? How do the animals react?

Napoleon decide to engage in trade with neighboring farms because they have a shortage of supplies such as dog biscuits and paraffin oil, so he willing to sell part of the wheat crop and a stack of hay.

27. How is the windmill destroyed? Why does Napoleon blame Snowball?

The windmill is blown down by a November storm. Snowball was blamed for blowing up the windmill, even though it was because it was not built strong enough.

28. Why does Napoleon insist the windmill must be rebuilt immediately? Napoleon insists the windmill must be rebuilt immediately because he doesnt want the animals to be discouraged to begin building if they wait until spring. The windmill does make it easier for the animals lives because it takes away all the struggles to survive during winter. 29. Why does Napoleon order that the hens eggs be sold? Because theres no food left and the animals are starving so their eggs have to be sold so food can be purchased to feel the other animals. 30. How does Napoleon react when the hens rebel against his orders? He cut off the rations of the hens food and if any animal give them pity by giving them food, they would be executed. Nine hens die and five gave up after their food ration was cut. 31. Why does Napoleon revive the threat of the farm being sabotaged by Snowball?

Snowball gets blamed for everything that goes wrong since Napoleon and Snowball argues a lot. They need more of an outside enemy that they dont like such as humans but the animals have too much fear to speak up.

32. Explain why the animals confessed to being traitors.

The animals confessed to being traitors because they were guilty of not fully supporting Napoleon new changes and policies. They did not expect being a traitor would be punished to death.

33. Why does Napoleon order the animals to stop singing Beasts of England? What does the song symbolize to the animals? Napoleon ordered to stop singing Beasts of England because now there is no rebellion and the pigs are in charge. An animal might also try to rebel again because they dont agree with the pigs being in charge and it is as bad as when Mr. Jones was in charge. Chapter 8 and 9: 34. What purpose is served by the production figures Squealer reads to the animals?

All the other animals are too blind to see that the things the pigs are telling Squealer to say are not true. The other animals cannot present an argument upon the pigs because they could be executed or punished.

35. Describe the sale of the stack of lumber. How does Napoleon outwit himself?

Napoleon was supposed to sell lumber to Mr. Pilkington and Mr. Fredrick, but instead he messed with them and has them bid against each other until Napoleons desired price. He insisted them to pay in banknotes, but it turns out to forged. Mr. Fredrick decides to attack the farm.

36. Why do the men blow up the windmill? What does the windmill symbolize?

The men blow up the windmill because they thought without the windmill the pigs would not have control and they would have to give in and give Mr. Jones the farm back. The Windmill represents the conquering of the pigs.

The animals so easily fooled, even when they find Squealer with a ladder and white paint beside the barn at night because many of the animals cannot understand and dont know how to read or write the commandments written on the wall. Benjamin knew what was going on but chooses not to say anything.

38. What is happening to Boxer? Boxer is working hard and is dying because he isnt healing from his injuries. He supports his motto so much he doesnt mind the pain.

39. Why does Napoleon allow Moses to return and to tell his stories about Sugarcandy Mountain?

Napoleon wanted the animals to look forward to something, so they can be motivated. The animals barely have any hope left so Napoleon thought bringing back Moses to tell the stories would bring back hope.

40. What happens to Boxer? How do the animals accept it?

Boxer injured himself while dragging a stone from the windmill. He took the knacker and turns it into glue, fertilizer, and dog food. Squealer tells everyone that Boxer passed away at the hospital. His final words were repeated and everyone believed what Squealer, except for Benjamin.

Chapter 10: 41. How do the animals now feel about their social order, their farm?

All the animals and the new animals are proud of being included in the only farm family and that there is no people walking on two legs on the farm.

42. What drastic actions do the pigs use to shatter the animals contentment?

The pigs began to dress in Mr. Jones clothing and Napoleon has a whip with him everywhere now. The pigs begin walking on two legs and started a new motto saying two legs are better than four legs.

43. All seven commandments are erased. What is the new commandment and how has it been true from the beginning?

The new commandment is "ALL ANIMALS ARE EQUAL BUT SOME ANIMALS ARE MORE EQUAL THAN OTHERS." This has been true since the beginning because the pigs have been learning how to read and write and Napoleon drinking milk, showing their superior above all the other animals.

44. What happens to the pigs appearance? The other animals are watching the pigs to begin resemble the humans. The animals begin to realize that there is no difference between the pigs and them but it is too late to do anything.

Why brought the pigs to thinking they are more equal than the other animals on the farm? The pigs thinking they are in power and in control of the whole farm make them much better than the others. This line is the new commandment and it shows that the pigs are clearly mentioning about themselves being more equal then others. Why would the pigs come up with this new motto? The pigs came up with this new motto through thinking they are better than all the other animals. this new motto is the opposite of the old motto showing that over the times have past the pigs changed their true motive of trying to help the farm to only helping themselves. How does this action of Napoleon reflect on himself? This action shows how greedy he is to be in power. He doesnt care about Snowball and just want him out. He killed many of the animals because they were believed as traitors. He began drinking milk to become more human-like.

Why do they feel this way? The animals felt that the work is no sacrifice because they are happy in doing the work. So they are motivated and dont feel any pain in working.

Why Napoleon is considered a coward? Without the dogs Napoleon has nothing yes, he has power but without the dogs the other animals will have courage to rebel.
