PV Elite 2011 Enhancements

Significant Code updates Heat Exchanger Enhancements Internationalization Productivity Enhancements Additional User requests

1/1/2011

ASME Division 1 Code Updates

Appendix 1-10 for nozzles

Alternate (to UG-37) procedure for nozzles

Can provide a more economical design Earlier only for Large nozzles Now for all nozzles on cylinders or cones

Heres how to set it

1/1/2011

ASME Division 1 Code Updates

Flanges bolt space correction factor (BSC)
To limit leakage between bolts (in circumferential direction) Penalty factor which increases flange moments Rigidity Index calculation updated for the BSC

Min. neck thickness for Manway/Access openings

Additional requirements for the 2010 edition Can increase the manway thickness, consider force/moment typically less

severe than a process nozzle.

Other Code Changes

Section II Part D Material properties
Allowable stress, Yield strength and Youngs Modulus etc. updated

ASME Division 2 changes

Conical transition Lots of formulae/table changes

EN13445 2009 Update welded flat heads nozzles tubesheet flanged extensions

Heat Exchanger Enhancements

Numerous Enhancements for exchanger analysis
Simply Supported design option Elastic-Plastic for floating exchangers Tubesheets as line of support for external pressure Operating temperatures instead of design temperatures

Implementation of EN Fixed and floating tubesheets

1/1/2011

Simply Supported modeling

But, Tubesheet may become thicker Increase allowable from 1.5 * S to 3* S (approx)

Available for ASME U-tube ASME Fixed ASME Floating For Pressure cases

Very useful when tubesheet is ok but junction is overstressed.

1/1/2011 10

Elastic-Plastic Analysis for Floating Exchangers

But, Tubesheet may become thicker Allow small plastic yielding, allowable is approximately 3*S

Shell after plastic iteration

Very useful when tubesheet is ok but junction is overstressed.

( for Pressure cases )

Tubesheet as a Support point

Vacuum Calculations

Previously, Design length Now,Lsmaller L => more economical design

Old:
New:

L = 5089 mm,
L = 3655 mm,

tre = 7.9 mm
tre = 7.3 mm

Useful for vacuum case. Reduced required thickness, may Eliminate rings.

Option to use Operating Temperatures

Can use Operating temperature instead of Design temperature. Allowable stresses, Yield strengths and Youngs modulus at operating temperatures. Operating metal temperatures are typically lower than the design temperatures.

Very useful for removing the overstress problems in the Thermal cases.

15

Internationalization
Continued support for world-wide users
Metric Material Database (VIII-1, VIII-2)

2009 IBC Update for Wind & Seismic

Costa Rican Seismic standard added

Updated Mexican Seismic Code standard

1/1/2011

16

New Metric Material Database

Imperial Internal Database

Converted from Imperial to user units 20,000 psi = 137.90 MPa v/s 138 MPa
Difference is insignificant

Acceptable per ASME Div. 1 GG-1

But not per some inspectors

Solution : New Metric database

It will be possible to choose between

native Metric database

or Imperial to Metric database. To select one

19

Jacket or Vapor/Distribution Belt

Integrated modeling Internal pressure, External weight, Wind, Seismic, CG, MAWP, Nozzle on Jacket Or Nozzle through jacket Can choose between vapor belt or jacket

Closure bar Analysis

Can have multiple Jackets On Screen Results

Adding a Jacket or Vapor Belt

Adding a Jacket

Jacket can span multiple Shell courses. Only on cylinders for now.

Vapor/Distribution Belt

1/1/2011

21

A conventional Jacket versus Vapor/Distribution Belt

No pressure Differential in a vapor/distribution belt so the external pressure on the inner vessel segment is zero
1/1/2011 22

Datum Line Entry Options

User defined Work Flow
Allows the user to set the datum line in a way that best fits their work methods.

1/1/2011

PV Elite will remember this setting from one model to the next until these settings are altered.
