Genesis Class 4!

Why were we made so small, with such great heavens above our heads? ~Because He desired creatures that would know wonder. Rabbi Freidmann Genesis 1:20-23 (ESV) 20!And God said, Let the waters swarm with swarms of living creatures, and let birds[g] y above the earth across the expanse of the heavens. 21!So God created the great sea creatures and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarm, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. 22!And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful and multiply and ll the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth. 23!And there was evening and there was morning, the fth day. The process of creation has now advanced to sustain life. God has put into place the components that will allow life to live. The waters here do not have a personality as they do in pagan mythology (tiamat, apu in the Enuma Elish) It produces something (marine life) only in response to the divine command Swarm with swarms = emphasize the abundant fertility. The idea of the verb is one of swift movement back and forth, literally swarming. This verb is used in Exod 1:7 to describe the rapid growth of the Israelite population in bondage. Hebrew word Sharats - teem, swarm, and multiply. Birds y above the earth: Hebrew text uses the compound form of the verb instead of the simple form to stress a swarming ight - again to underscore the abundant fruitfulness. Living creatures Hebrew word "nefesh hayyah" to animate life which embodies the breathe of life. It is distinct from plant life which the text does not give the same life to. Hebrew word Nephesh - Creatures with will and emotion Hebrew word Ramas - to creep, move lightly, walk on all fours

Genesis Class 4!

So God created the = underscore that these creatures even the great ones are part of Gods perfect creation. The Hebrew term !"#$%&'( (tanninim) is used for snakes (Exod 7:9), crocodiles (Ezek 29:3), or other powerful animals (Jer 51:34). In Isa 27:1 the word is used to describe a mythological sea creature that symbolizes Gods enemies. "And it was so" is missing here but appears in the Greek text of the Septuagint version. In the JPS Tanakh. Across the expanse of the sky - the Hebrew Rakia (hammered out) literally over the face of this is from the viewpoint of earth - us as an observer looking up God created this is the rst use of "bara" since its initial use in verse one. "Bereshith bara Elohim et hashamayim" Seamonsters - hmmmmm... Leviathan, Great Beasts. God blessed them animate creation receives the gift of fertility- the gift of making more. Also the Rabbis say that because they would later serve as food they required a special blessing. While the translation blessed has been retained here for the sake of simplicity, it would be most helpful to paraphrase it as God endowed them with fruitfulness or something similar, for here it refers to Gods giving the animals the capacity to reproduce. The Blessing: The divine blessing occurs after works of creation and is intended to continue that work the word of blessing guarantees success. The word means to enrich; to endow, Be fruitful and multiply. Fruitful = to produce fruits Multiply = because they are fruitful they are commanded to multiply. If there was only fruitful it would be for one. The addition of multiply denotes many. The most visible evidence of that enrichment is productivity or fruitfulness.

Genesis Class 4!

The repeated emphasis of be fruitful multiply ll adds to this abundance God has given to life. The meaning is underscored by the similar sounds: )*+, (barakh) with -*+, (bara), and .*+/ (parah) with .+0* (ravah). The multiplication of the shes and loaves. The intention of this act by Jesus was to provide divinely a human need. But this multiplication was meant to be a blessing that would multiply into their lives. Chesed = Hebrew word commonly translated as "loving-kindness," "kindness" or "love." Many Jewish thinkers view chesed as the primary virtue. Think about paying it forward. Creation is a model for Chesed. It is not saying that these were rational creatures who heard and obeyed the word; rather, it stresses that fruitfulness in the animal world is a result of the divine decree and not of some pagan cultic ritual for fruitfulness. DAY SIX GENESIS 1:24-25 (ESV) 24!And God said, Let the earth bring forth living creatures according to their kindslivestock and creeping things and beasts of the earth according to their kinds. And it was so. 25!And God made the beasts of the earth according to their kinds and the livestock according to their kinds, and everything that creeps on the ground according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. There are three groups of land animals here: the cattle or livestock (mostly domesticated), things that creep or move close to the ground (such as reptiles or rodents), and the wild animals (all animals of the eld). The three terms are general classications without specic details. Kinds = Specic actions and design.

Genesis Class 4!

Creation is moving to its nal act and action. It was good A standard of goodness beyond what we know. A standard of goodness that agrees with Gods nature. This is human beings whose habitat is dry land The very language of this passage speaks to the culmination - the crescendo of creation 26!Then God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the sh of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth. 27! So God created man in his own image, !!!!in the image of God he created him; !!!!male and female he created them. LET US MAKE this evokes the use of the heavenly court - Triune thinking allows us to understand this in the context of the Father Son Holy Spirit at work in this passage. God invites the heavenly court to participate in the creation of humankind (perhaps in the role of offering praise, see Job 38:7), but he himself is the one who does the actual creative work. Of course, this view does assume that the members of the heavenly court possess the divine image in some way. MAN "adam'a" in the Hebrew is a generic term for humankind. it never appears in the Hebrew in a feminine or plural - This term means both man and woman IN OUR IMAGE this is interesting the phrases mean the exact same thing Image - Likeness in the Hebrew. In the Book of Genesis the two terms describe human beings who in some way reect the form and the function of the creator.

Genesis Class 4!

The form is more likely stressing the spiritual rather than the physical. The image of God would be the God-given mental and spiritual capacities that enable people to relate to God and to serve him by ruling over the created order as his earthly vice-regents. In our image, after our likeness. Similar language is used in the instructions for building the tabernacle. Moses was told to make it according to the pattern he was shown on the mount (Exodus 25:9, 10). Was he shown a form, a replica, of the spiritual sanctuary in the heavenly places? In any case, what was produced on earth functioned as the heavenly sanctuary does, but with limitations. Gods purpose in giving humankind his image is that they might rule the created order on behalf of the heavenly king and his royal court. So the divine image, however it is dened, gives humankind the capacity and/or authority to rule over creation. -----------God Rules over all things------------------------Man Rules with God-------------------BARA x's 3 - Depth of creation woven into this fabric of life The distinction of humankind as male and female is another point of separation in Gods creation. 28!And God blessed them. And God said to them, Be fruitful and multiply and ll the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the sh of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth. 29!And God said, Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food. 30!And to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the heavens and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food. And it was so. 31!And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.

BLESSES THEM God comes down - enters into a personal relationship / communion with man. Bless here means to endow with the capacity to reproduce and be fruitful, as the following context indicates. Emphasizes the nature of human beings in their relationship to God. This word in Hebrew is a relational word. Used with God. This also gives us the vision or thought of the image of God being the blueprint for all creation. That it exists in the image of God - what God is. Elsewhere the Hebrew verb translated subdue means to enslave (2 Chr 28:10; Neh 5:5; Jer 34:11, 16), to conquer, (Num 32:22, 29; Josh 18:1; 2 Sam 8:11; 1 Chr 22:18; Zech 9:13; and probably Mic 7:19) Humankind is not viewed as having an adversarial relationship with the world. The general meaning of the verb appears to be to bring under ones control for ones advantage. In Gen 1:28 one might paraphrase it as follows: harness its potential and use its resources for your benet. In an ancient Israelite context this would suggest cultivating its elds, mining its mineral riches, using its trees for construction, and domesticating its animals. Two commands: reproduce (Multiplication) and rule (Dominion). But with the blessing comes the ability to be fruitful and to rule. In procreation they will share in the divine work of creating human life and passing on the divine image (see 5:1-3); in ruling they will serve as Gods vice-regents on earth. They together, the human race collectively, have the responsibility of seeing to the welfare of that which is put under them and the privilege of using it for their benet. 1:29 Behold (Hinneh) It is often used to express the dramatic present, the immediacy of an event Look, this is what I am doing! Genesis 2:1-4 1 Thus the heavens and the earth were nished, and all the host of them. 2!And on the seventh day God nished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done. 3!So God

blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation. These are the generations of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens. Genesis 2:1-2:3 The Hebrew term (1,+2 (shabbat) can be translated to rest (and he rested) but it basically means to cease. This is not a rest from exhaustion; it is the cessation of the work of creation. He sanctied this day. to make something holy; to set something apart; to distinguish it. On the literal level the phrase means essentially that God made this day different. But within the context of the Law, it means that the day belonged to God; it was for rest from ordinary labor, worship, and spiritual service. The day belonged to God because He is holy. 1 Peter 1:16 Be Holy just as I am Holy. 2:4 The only use of the word here that does not include a personal name. These generations (Think Geneologies) The expression this is the account of is an important title used throughout the Book of Genesis, serving as the organizing principle of the work. 2:4 This is the account 9! of the heavens and the earth 10! when they were created when the Lord God 11! made the earth and heavens. 12! 2:5 It is a way of saying: back before anything was growing. There was no uncultivated, general growth because there was no rain, and there were no grains because there was no man to cultivate the soil.

This implies to a reader with foreknowledge that a problem is coming. Genesis 3:23 Romans 3:23 Whatever is given this breath of life becomes animated with the life from God, has spiritual understanding (Job 32:8), and has a functioning conscience (Prov 20:27). Human life is described here as consisting of a body (made from soil from the ground) and breath (given by God). Both animals and humans are called a living being (.1314 2567#) but humankind became that in a different and more signicant way. The human being is the pinnacle of creation. The human being is 100% spirit, and 100% physical. Existing in the tension of both spaces. Every human eye contains about 120 million rods and 7 million cones. In biology, the vertebrate photoreceptors of the retina are "wired in backwards," causing the light to pass through the nerves before striking the receptors themselves. Although this design seems stupid at rst glance, there are some very good reasons why the retina is designed this way. In fact, if it were "wired correctly," the system would fail within a short period of time due to other, much larger problems. This is connected to billions of neural connections that feed billions of brain cells The human brain does roughly 100,000 calculations a second. Every second you are understanding, perceiving, calculating in a way that you do not even understand. Scientists who study the brain have found that most of our thoughts are reductionist in nature. We are trying to break the thing down to the thing that makes the thing to understand its place in our lives. Is it a danger - how do I relate to it - what does it mean to me. Roughly every seven years outside of your brain matter your body is regenerating you So that raises the question of how does your body understand how to make more and more of you and not someone else? Theres a copy of our entire DNA sequence in every cell of our body. Our entire DNA sequence is called a genome. Theres an estimated 3 billion DNA bases in our genome (6ft length) Our entire DNA sequence would ll 200 1,000-page New York City telephone directories. 200,000 pages. A complete 3 billion base genome would take 3 gigabytes of storage space. If you unwrap all the DNA you have in all your cells, you could reach the moon 6000 times If all the DNA in your body was put end to end, it would reach to the sun and back over 600 times (100 trillion times six feet divided by 92 million miles). It would take a person typing 60 words per minute, eight hours a day, around 50 years to type the human genome. Your DNA is reproduced by a cell called a "Helocase" that feeds through splitting the double helix at the same rate as a jet engine spins. the strand is copied exactly - one forward and then one backwards. In essence the DNA thread is unzipped, each half of it can be used as a template to recreate a whole double strand identical to the original. This replication happens every time a cell divides.
