Inthe18thand19thcenturies,scientistsdiscoveredthattheelementaryfunctions powers,roots,trigonometricfunctionsandtheirinverseshadtheirlimitations.They foundthatsolutionsforsomeimportantphysicalproblemsliketheorbitalmotionof planets,theoscillatorymotionofsuspendedchains,andthecalculationofthe gravitationalpotentialofnearlysphericalbodiescouldnotalwaysbedescribedina closedformusingonlyelementaryfunctions.Evenintherealmofpure mathematics,somequantitiessuchasthecircumferenceofanellipsewerealso impossibletodiscussinsuchterms.Functionsdescribingsolutionstotheseproblems wereoftenexpressedasinfiniteseries,asintegrals,orassolutionstodifferential equations.
