Brain Cancer

Brain cancer can occur when one type of cell transforms and loses its normal characteristics. Once transformed, the cells grow and multiply in abnormal ways. As these abnormal cells grow, they become a mass of cells, or tumor. Brain tumors that result from this abnormal growth are called primary brain tumors because they originate in the brain. The most common primary brain tumors are gliomas, meningiomas, pituitary adenomas, vestibular schwannomas, primary CNS lymphomas, and primitive neuroectodermal tumors (medulloblastomas).

Brain Cancer Treatment

Brain cancer treatment options include a combination of chemo-, biological, radiation, or gene therapy approaches. For patients with metastases to the central nervous system from systemic cancer, procedures may involve: Surgery Chemotherapy Radiation Therapy Radiotherapy Steroids (to treat and prevent swelling especially in the brain) Anti-seizure medication (to treat and prevent seizures associated with intracranial pressure) Bone marrow transplantation Palliative care Rehabilitation Antibiotics Continuous follow-up care

Technology Used for Treatment of Brain Cancer

To treat brain cancer, the following technologies are used at the radio oncology department: CyberKnife: Image-Guided Robotic Radiosurgery: Stereotactic radiosurgery is a non-invasive treatment in which high dose radiation beams enter the body through various angles and intersect at the desired target. This allows for a concentrated dose to reach the tumor while limiting the dose to surrounding healthy tissues. The CyberKnife uses a linear accelerator mounted on a robotic arm to focus multiple beams of radiation into the tumor. It is used to treat both primary and metastatic brain tumors. Gamma Knife: It is a precise, noninvasive brain surgery that uses beams of highly-focused gamma rays to treat tumors or other abnormalities in the brain. It is used primarily to treat brain tumors and a condition known as an arteriovenous malformations (an abnormal connection between the arteries and veins), as well as functional problems such as trigeminal neuralgia.
