Expository essay: THE ROLE OF NURSING STUDENTS TO ACHIEVE THE GOALS OF MDGS Dewi Widyaningsih, Student of Nursing School Diponegoro University

Background Millennium Development Goals is a milestone done by Nation in the whole world to sustain world development. MDGs bring 8 specific goals and expected to be achieved in 2015. The Goals represent human needs and basic rights (United Nation, 2010). Some of MDGs concern on health aspects. Nursing student have important roles in achieving MDGs target at 2015 especially in the fourth, fifth and sixth goals of MDGs which concern on health aspect which is reduce children mortality, increase maternal health, and combat HIV/AIDS and other diseases (GNA, 2013). This essay aims to explain the role of nursing students to achieve MDGs. Nursing student role to meet MDG 4 The MDG 4 is to reduce children mortality. Data showed 6.9 million children under five years died in 2011. Almost 75% of all child deaths death from six conditions: neonatal causes, pneumonia, diarrhea, malaria, measles, and HIV/AIDS. WHO already promote some strategies to reduce children mortality. Nursing students could take apart in implementing those strategies, they might join with the community health workers to give home care towards newborns with complication or manage the childhood illness for children less than five years. The students might also held a socialization or health education about breast feeding and immunization to help expand the immunization program; and young children and infants feeding (WHO, 2013). Nursing student role to meet MDG 5 The MDG 5 is to improve maternal health. Globally for about 287 000 women died during pregnancy and childbirth in 2010, a decrease of 47% from levels in 1990. Most of them died because they had no access to routine examination and emergency care. Nursing students have role on the effort to meet with MDG 5. Students could taking apart in the

WHO strategy which is coordinating research, with wide-scale application, that focuses on improving maternal health in pregnancy and during and after childbirth. Students in high level education have a duty to conduct research, by held the research concerning on improvement of the mental health, students have already give the contribution in effort of improving maternal health. The result of the research might used to be direction in improving maternal health ( WHO, 2012) Nursing student role to meet MDG 6 On efforts to meet with the MDG 5; Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases, nursing student can participate to help promote the WHO strategies to achieve MDG 5. Nursing students might hold campaign focusing on reducing the HIV/AIDS sufferer. The students could do the health education and health promotion on how to avoid HIV/AIDS transmission. In the other hand the student should also held socialization towards the citizen to not avoid the HIV/AIDS sufferer, to create equalities emphasizing on human rights issues. A continuous program campaigning about transmission of HIV/AIDS might help to reduce the newly diagnosed HIV/AIDS (WHO, 2011) Conclusion Nursing student as agent of change has several roles on effort to meet with MDG goal. The students could implement their role on giving health education (educator), conduct a research (researcher), and provide care to the children and maternal health (care giver).
